Święta ironia. Dwa oblicza parodii ekfrazy katedry w Pani Bovary Gustave’a Flauberta
This article aims to analyze the use of parodic ekphrasis of the cathedral in Gustave Flaubert’s Madame Bovary. This matter was first brought to attention by Małgorzata Czermińska, who pointed out the satirical nature of the literary description of the gothic church in Rouen. However, to truly understand the way in which the novelist transformed the traditional formula of ekphrasis in Madame Bovary one must consider two drastically different dimensions of this treatment. The inspiration for this division comes from the work of Renata Lis, who argued that Flaubert’s work is marked by a fundamental ambivalence concerning spirituality, resulting in a variety of representations of holiness in his novels. On one hand, the parody of ekphrasis in the novel serves the most obvious function – it’s a cause for the mockery of the bourgeoisie and its distorted spiritual and aesthetic sensibilities. On the other hand, the parodic aspect of the discussed fragment is reminiscent of Olga Freudenberg’s approach. According to this Russian scholar, the essence of parody is not expressed through comedy and ridicule but rather through tragedy and an inseparable connection to the sacred. Such an understanding of the parodic ekphrasis of the gothic temple in Madame Bovary highlights the remarkable consistency with which Flaubert reflected on the existential condition of the protagonist. Emma’s inability to grasp the aesthetic values and sanctity of the cathedral expresses her tragic tendency to misrecognize, which leads to the novel’s somber finale. This article aims to analyze the use of parodic ekphrasis of the cathedral in Gustave Flaubert’s Madame Bovary. Różne marginesy
The article contains a review of bell hooks’ Feminist Theory: From Margin to Center (1984; Wydawnictwo Krytyki Politycznej, Warszawa 2013, second edition 2022). The text by the American scholar presents groundbreaking theses for the development of the Black feminism movement – she was one of the first to draw attention to the need to take into account various social determinants of violence against women. At the same time, it emphasizes the exclusionary and marginalizing assumptions of second-wave feminism that dominated in the mid-twentieth century. In my review, I reflect on the importance of republishing a theoretical book that examines the systemic violence faced by Black women in a patriarchal and white society. For me, it is important to ask about the relevance of hooks’ reflections and the role they play in thinking about feminism in contemporary capitalist society. I also reflect on the applicability of hooks’ theory in Polish feminism context. The article contains a review of bell hooks’ Feminist Theory: From Margin to Center (1984; Wydawnictwo Krytyki Politycznej, Warszawa 2013, second edition 2022). Serdeczne idiomy w listach Wisławy Szymborskiej i Kornela Filipowicza
The correspondence between Wisława Szymborska and Kornel Filipowicz, which has been published in the book Listy. Najlepiej w życiu ma Twój kot (2016), is interpreted in this paper as a love discourse with the use of private idioms. This creates a poetics of the cryptogram, enigmatic to others, yet clear to the correspondents who combine epistolography, applied arts, literature, and life into one whole. The main means of this poetics is the recontextualization in which the writers perform different roles and move between them. This is related to creating of the text as theatre, which characterizes Szymborska’s poetry in particular as a modern lyric of the mask and role. The violation of the borders between various fields of art and life is done in these letters through collages, stickers, and ready mades that engage not only mind but also body, allowing to hide feelings behind a masquerade, at the same time conveying what is inexpressible. The correspondence between Wisława Szymborska and Kornel Filipowicz, which has been published in the book Listy. Pomiędzy bestsellerem a poetologią. O aurze dzieła, dyskrecji wobec czytelnika i tajemnicy formy na przykładzie noweli Siegfrieda Lenza Minuta ciszy (2008)
Siegfried Lenz’s novella (2008, English edition 2009) has not only been appreciated by literary critics, but also turned out to be a great bestseller. The novella is a frequent subject of research analysis, es- pecially in terms of its location in the tradition of German and world novella writing. This diversity of reception is astonishing and presents an interesting phenomenon. The novella tells a banal love story, but through an intentional silence and a series of intertextual tropes it also creates mysteriousness. The analysis proposed here is based on Walter Benjamin’s notion of “aura” in the 1930s. From today’s point of view, this concept requires a few additions, primarily from the perspective of systems theory. As it turns out this concept can be applied both to the content of the novella and to the strategy of literary criticism, as well as to explain the role of form and context in the personal perception of the text.

Interpretacja jako samozbawienie. O Gnieździe światów M.S. Huberatha
This article is an attempt to interpret the novel Gniazdo światów (Nest of Worlds) by Marek S. Huberath. Contrary to appearances, this novel does not fit into the science fiction convention, nor does it implement dystopian schemes without reservations. Instead, the novel uses a repertoire of postmodern tricks and emphasizes the cryptotheological background. These themes can be read through the reference to transhistoric, gnostic world-feeling, and hermetic speculation. Therefore, Huberath’s novel appears as a meta-dystopia from which self-salvation can be an appropriate interpretation of the world around us.This article is an attempt to interpret the novel Gniazdo światów (Nest of Worlds) by Marek S. Ciało jako rekwizyt
The article is an attempt to describe the conditions in which the body assumes the role of a prop – it becomes an object organizing individual and social life. For such a process to take place, it is necessary to disconnect the body from the Self. It comes with his death. Funeral practices that change the social status of the body can take a monistic or dualistic form. The former make the body a relic and are based on the belief that soma is connected with its spiritual essence. The latter, on the contrary, points to the impermanence of such a connection. In this way, the body becomes a prop, an object, an object, and a tool for funeral performances. The article is an attempt to describe the conditions in which the body assumes the role of a prop – it becomes an object organizing individual and social life. Światotwórcze funkcje rekwizytu. Collectibles w dylogii „The Last of Us” jako źródło wiedzy o przeszłości
The article concerns the functioning of selected collectibles in the post-apocalyptic dilogy of digital games The Last of Us (Naughty Dog, 2013–2020). The authors make a typology of collectibles and distinguish among them props that support the gameplay, characterize the characters and extend the storyworld, referring to the prop theory proposed by Kendal Walton. They are particularly interested in the last type of props, which include notes, diaries and letters left in various places of the world presented by anonymous members of the American community. The authors indicate that these props can be treated as specific artifacts of the past, which, although not important from the gameplay perspective, perform important world-creating functions. In this context, they describe collectibles as an element of historical culture (J. Rüsen) and a source of social memory (M. Golka), and discuss their allotopic potential (U. Eco, K.M. Maj). They refer to those props that shape the history and mythology of the post-apocalyptic world, and especially to the notes describing Outbreak Day, the apogee of the pandemic disease that decimated humanity in the game. Written sources are of a personal nature – they present an individual perspective on a breakthrough moment in the history of the depicted world. For this reason, the authors refer to them as ego-props, thus extending the concept of ego-document.The article concerns the functioning of selected collectibles in the post-apocalyptic dilogy of digital games The Last of Us (Naughty Dog, 2013–2020).
