Effect of thinning on growth and shape of Castanea sativa adult tree plantations for timber production in Chile
Get PDF6 páginasChestnut (Castanea sativa Mill.) is an interesting species for high-quality timber production. It is well known that the species responds to early thinning, but there is no information on the impact of late interventions. The objective of this study was to assess the effect of a late thinning on the performance of unmanaged adult chestnut plantations in Chile. Future-tree selective thinning and control were compared in adult plantations using a randomized complete block design with three replicates at three sites, Minas, Pillo-Pillo and Pumillahue. Tree growth was evaluated periodically during the first 7 years after thinning in all plantations. Additionally, almost 20 years after the intervention, the Pumillahue plantation was measured for growth and tree shape variables. In this case study, the effect of thinning on tree growth decreased considerably after 5 years, with a maximum DBH increment in the third year after the intervention (45.8 %, 68.6 %, and 42.2 % in Minas, Pillo-Pillo and Pumillahue, respectively). In all plantations, basal area was smaller in the thinned plots in the first years after the intervention, but in Pumillahue, 19 years after thinning, no differences were found among treatments. Height was statistically greater under thinning seven years after the intervention; this effect was also found in Pumillahue plantation 19 years after thinning. Most trees showed high vigor, and were straight and healthy, even in control plots. Late effect of thinning was observed 19 years after thinning on tree shape, with a reduction in the proportion of bifurcated trees from 16 % to 8 %. The results suggest that late thinning is an effective silvicultural intervention to produce high-quality chestnut timber in unmanaged adult plantations. Estimating the glued-laminated timber demand in non-residential buildings in Chile

The non-residential building sector is attracting the attention of local architects and builders, possibly due to the multiplicity of types of buildings, in which the attributes and advantages of this product are expressed. There is no record of the amount of glued laminated timber that is consumed annually in the country. The present study is a contribution to the knowledge of the demand, from the point of view of the potential that the non-residential construction market would offer. The main result indicates that, if all the potential non-residential area use glued laminated timber as a structural element, the associated demand would be in the range of 192 to 220 thousand cubic meters. This volume accounts for the enormous space that exists in the construction market to position this product, since production does not exceed 25,000 m3

No full text38 páginasLa presente guía es resultado del proyecto desarrollado por el Instituto de Investigaciones Agropecuarias (INIA) y el Instituto Forestal (INFOR) con apoyo de la Fundación para la Innovación Agraria (FIA) denominado "Balance de carbono como hoja de ruta para la generación de sistemas productivos agropecuarios carbonos neutrales", que fue realizado considerando los rubros de leche bovina, carne bovina, cereales y frutales (avellanos) abarcando las regiones de la Araucanía, Los Ríos y Los Lagos. Esta guía se propone como un documento base para la realización de balances de C a nivel predial. Si bien esta guía ha sido desarrollada tomando algunos sistemas productivos, los criterios y cálculos pueden extrapolarse a otros sistemas de producción agropecuarios, tanto en las regiones evaluadas como en otras regiones del país, debiendo adaptarse según se requiera, pudiendo servir para comparar el mismo predio en distintos años o la comparación entre predios y rubros. Junto con ello la Guía permitirá realizar estimaciones para la identificación de las principales categorías (y subcategorías) de emisión, priorizando la implementación de estrategias de mitigación de GEi enfocadas en aquellas actividades que constituyan las categorías principales de emisión

Using ARIMA models to project sawlogs and sawn wood prices in the Chilean construction materials market

The ARIMA models are management tools that have the potential to support projections in the short, and medium term.
In the present research, the implementation of local ARIMA models were carried out in Biobío, La Araucanía, and Los Lagos regions, using as supplies the time series of radiata pine (Pinus radiata) sawn wood, and sawlogs prices, which have been collected periodically by the Forestry Institute (INFOR). The estimations on the implemented models had positive results in respect of validation data, with the exception of sawn wood prices from the four quarter of 2020, and part of 2021, which presented an unusual increase during the COVID-19 pandemic
