    No full text
Rhynchobatus australiae is a species of wedgefish that is vulnerable to overfishing due to their life history characteristics This study aimed to determine the fisheries and biological information of R. australiae in Terengganu waters. A total of 26 fish were collected over a 3-month period in Pulau Kambing Fish Landing Port, Terengganu and analysed for abundance, length frequency distribution, LWRs, and growth parameters. Results showed that the abundance of R. australiae in Terengganu was higher compared to the estimation made in other locations, with a CPUE of 49.05 kg/haul and 9.15 kg/day. The LWRs for males, females, and pooled sexes were a = 0.0057 and b = 2.9404, a = 0.0018, b = 3.2078, and a = 0.0029, b = 3.0979, respectively. The von Bertalanffy Growth parameters for male, female, and pooled sexes of R. australiae were k = 0.035, L∞ = 332.825, t0 = -4.495, k = 1.005, L∞ = 43.161, t0 = -2.99, and k = 0.089, L∞=222.412, t0=-2.565, respectively. Males R. australiae exhibiting a higher average length than females. This study was limited in terms of the time span covered and the sample size, which may have introduced variability in the results and may not be representative of the larger fish population. However, the results of this study may serve as preliminary data for the fish population dynamics of R. australiae in Terengganu waters and could be used to guide future research. Future study with a longer time span and a larger, more diverse sample size are needed to estimate the abundance and size of R. australiae more accurately in this region

    No full text
Pharmaceutically active compounds (PhACs) have received a lot of attention due to their enormous consumption proportions, significant bioactivity, and prospective ecotoxicity that tend to impact the health of marine ecosystems and humans. In this study, five commonly used pharmaceuticals were studied in water bodies of Asian countries. The main objective of this study was to review the occurrence and distribution of selected PhACs such as diclofenac, fluoxetine, caffeine, propranolol, and triclosan in the water bodies of Asian countries. This review was found that the range of concentration of pharmaceuticals was 0.055 to 11.4 x103 ng/L. Five distribution maps were plotted using the Geographical Information System (GIS) software. China has been identified as the country that discovered most of the selected PhACs occurrence and distribution compared to other nations. Data obtained from the present review was analyzed for risk assessment analysis using the Risk Quotient (RQ) technique, which is typically applied to assess PhACs with potential ecological concerns in water ecosystems. The findings of the study showed that 31 RQ was found to be non-significant. Fluoxetine compound was classified as having the highest RQ value calculated for phytoplankton, with an RQ value of 136.08. Hence, PhACs surveillance in the water ecosystems must be strengthened, and research on PhACs occurrence and potential risks should be highlighted in global environmental research

The researchers found twenty hazard identification based on job task of the fishermen that exposed to some hazards such as ergonomic, biological, physical, psychosocial, and natural. Six out of twenty hazards (30%) are considered as low risk and seven out of twenty (35%) respectively are recognized as medium and high risk. The results of the study shows that fishermen are highly exposed to ergonomic hazard. All the suggestions for the prevention measures for the risk control of the hazards are from the officers of Pontian Area Fishermen’s Association. This research is expected to raise awareness of the occupational safety and health hazards among fishermen and will be referenced to future researcher, policy makers, and other parties to take part in development of future plans.   Keywords: Safety; Health; Hazards; Fisherme

COMPARING NUMERICAL METHODS OF THE EVANS PRICE ADJUSTMENT MODEL FOR GLOBAL SILVER PRICE

    No full text
Abstract. This research paper centred on how the global silver price can be estimated and predicted by implementing the Evans Price Adjustment model (EPA). Firstly, we derived the equation that can represent and capture data involving price, demand, and supply of global silver price 2013-2021. We deployed two different numerical methods of solving ordinary differential equation (ODE). The first method is 4th order Adam Bashforth-Moulton method and the second is Euler numerical method. Same problem were solved using the two numerical methods, an attempt to check the effectiveness of the deployed methods. From there, we were able to affirm more suitable technique for this problem. Evans Price Adjustment model which is based on the fundamental principle of economics was chosen because it established a relationship between the price, demand and supply. The data used in this research work were collected from World Bank, a public open-source and trustable website that arbour data regarding the price of commodities. From our findings, this research work can be proclaimed to be successful, since the results obtained using Adam Bashforth-Moulton and Euler numerical methods follow the trend in the real data. Although, ABM4 model predictive model outperformed its counterpart in predicting the price of silver more accurately, but both approaches were able to capture the trend in real price of silver within the time frame. Hopefully, this research work would be a useful reference materials for investors and other shareholder in silver business. Keyword:  EPAM, Euler method, Numerical solution, predictive mode

UNDERSTANDING THE THERMAL COAL MOVEMENTS FROM COLOMBIA TO CHILE THROUGH THE PANAMA CANAL USING LOGIT MODELS- LOOKING AHEAD

    No full text
This study attempted to specify logit models for bulkers transporting mostly thermal coal from the East Coast of Colombia to Chile through the Panama Canal compared to the alternative route. The preliminary proposed predictors for the logit models included voyage cost variables and Canal's attributes. For the route choice of coal from the East Coast of Colombia to Chile, voyage cost factors such as Panama Canal cost, distance difference between Panama versus alternative route, post arrival of vessel to the next port and the maximum transit draft were important factors in this choice, as well as Panama Canal attributes such as vessel arrivals at the Panama Canal and the Panamax Plus requirement to transit the neopanamax locks. The route choice involved the Panama Canal and Cape Horn/Magellan Strait in the Southern tip of South America. This study analyzed coal traffic between October 1, 2016, and September 30, 2020, and briefly discussed the future of coal movements through Panama, given Chile's long term plans to generate electricity using renewanable energy sources and hydrogen. This paper is a contribution to the discrete choice literature and attempted to provide insights into route choice factors involving the Panama Canal, proposing new preliminary explanatory variables to better understand route choices that may apply in future Panama Canal studies. The study will be a contribution to the universal maritime coal transportation literature, and it is a continuation on research related to the Panama canal, particularly on route choices using AIS information

MEASUREMENT OF PORT CITIES – A SYSTEMATIC LITERATURE REVIEW APPROACH

    No full text
A port city is a city that engages in port and maritime activities and also develops land and maritime economic activities. However, the concept or the tools to measure whether a seaport has achieved the criteria of port-city is still lacking. This paper aims to identify the port city measurement and to propose a novel framework for extending port city development as a tool to improve the maritime tourism sector. This paper adopted a traditional systematic literature review (SLR) with content analysis to code the outcome. The final results indicate that only seven articles validated outcomes from the Scopus database. Based on the global view outcome, there are only six main clusters and 27 sub-factors influencing the development of port cities. The six main clusters were: port characteristics; the awareness of maritime stakeholders, port intensity, vessel characteristics, information technology, and the government’s role. The new strategies could lead to a digitalization of decision-making methods in smart maritime tourism in port city development

Lighthouse is a tower with a strong light which gives navigators a continuous signal. There are about six lighthouses under the responsibility of the Central Region Marine Department of Malaysia. These lighthouses experienced severe construction defects and internal defects. Predictive maintenance, therefore, is performed manually to preserve the lighthouses. Lighthouse Maintenance Management Mobile Apps System (LMMS) is an Android mobile application developed for the Assistant Engineer, Technician, Marine Officer and Division Head of the Central Region Marine Department of Malaysia, responsible for the maintenance of lighthouses. Currently, the Central Region’s Marine Department of Malaysia lacks a computerised maintenance management system for the lighthouses, especially to manage maintenance schedules, work orders and maintenance-related records. In addition, the technician still uses a manual guide for troubleshooting tools and spare parts. Thus, LMMS was developed to solve these problems as a fully functioning mobile application by designing and developing a system for lighthouse maintenance management according to user needs. The methodology used to develop this mobile application is agile. The LMMS provides complete features for scheduling maintenance, orders for maintenance work, records related to maintenance, a list of tools and spare parts, and management of lighthouse information. The result shows that LMMS contributes to ease of use by using the mobile platform, quick and simple modules, systematic storage of historical records, efficient workload distribution, rapid reporting, updated list of tools and spare parts, and providing the latest information on the lighthouses. Deploying LMMS helps the Central Region Marine Department of Malaysia manage and maintain the lighthouses more effectively
