    Synthesis of Zinc Oxide Nanoparticles by using Aloe Vera Leaf Extract as Pontential Anode Material in Lithium Ion Battery

    Synthesis of nanoparticles by using plant have sparked interest among researchers due to environmentally safe, inexpensive and simple method to compare with chemical method. Use of plant in synthesis zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) that act as reducing and capping agent are more recommended, due to high production of product and rate of synthesis is faster than using microorganism. This study focus on the synthesis of ZnONPs by using leaf extract of aloe vera (Aloe bardenisis miller) with different concentration (30%, 40% and 50%) and various calcination temperature which are 500 ˚C, 700 ˚C and 900 ˚C for 4 hours. Fourier – transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray Diffraction (XRD) and Brunauer-Emmet and Teller (BET) were used to characterize the prepared samples. FTIR spectra showed present wavenumber in between 400-500 cm-1 indicated the presence of Zn-O stretch. Powder XRD pattern confirmed the hexagonal wurtzite structure with average particles size from 24.19 nm to 67.69 nm for all concentration and temperature by using Scherer’s equation. For SEM analysis the images show irregular shape for concentrations 30% and 50% with size range from 500 nm to 900 nm while for concentration 40% cubic shape was observe with size range from 140 nm to 900 nm. All characterize show that formation of ZnO NPs depend on the concentration and calcination temperature.     Mengekalkan sumber semula jadi adalah penting untuk keseimbangan ekosistem, namun aktiviti pemuliharaan tidak dapat dilaksanakan disebabkan kekangan kewangan atau kurangnya perhatian. Oleh itu, pengenalan yuran masuk adalah bertepatan untuk membantu mendapatkan dana bagi penambahbaikan dan pengurusan kawasan rekreasi berfungsi dengan baik. Kajian ini menilai tahap kesanggupan untuk membayar (WTP) pengunjung yang memasuki kawasan rekreasi Sungai Sedim dan untuk mengenal pasti faktor-faktor yang mempengaruhi kesanggupan untuk membayar menggunakan kaedah penilaian kontingen (CVM). Sejumlah 150 responden dipilih secara rawak dalam kajian ini. Perisian STATA 14.1 digunakan untuk menganalisis data menggunakan analisis deskriptif dan kaedah regresi logistik binari. Kedua-dua model logit dan probit yang digunakan untuk menganalisis data primer yang diperolehi melalui temuduga. Keputusan menunjukkan bahawa harga, pendapatan, dan umur mempengaruhi kesanggupan pengunjung untuk membayar penyelenggaraan Sungai Sedim. Kesanggupan untuk membayar juga dipengaruhi oleh faktor yang dibincangkan dalam kajian ini. Hasil kajian menunjukkan bahawa 64% responden sanggup membayar dan 36% responden tidak sanggup membayar daripada 150 responden. Harga purata kesanggupan membayar adalah RM 3.71 setiap orang, menunjukkan bahawa kebanyakan orang menghargai usaha pemuliharaan hutan untuk melindungi keseimbangan ekosistem dalam jangka panjang

    Dispersive Liquid-Liquid Microextraction for the Extraction of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons in Apple Juice

    Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are hazardous and persistent organic pollutants that usually exist at low concentrations in the environment. In this study, dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction (DLLME) technique coupled with high performance liquid chromatography-fluorescence detection (HPLC-FD) was optimized for the analysis of selected PAHs, namely phenanthrene (PHE), fluoranthene (FLA) and benzo[a]pyrene (BaP) in apple juice. Under the optimal extraction conditions (the mixture of 200 µL of acetone and 50 µL of 1-octanol was applied to extract the selected PAHs for 1 min), the DLLME-HPLC-FD showed excellent linearity over the concentration range of 5 to 200 µg/L for both PHE and FLA, and 0.01 to 5 µg/L for BaP with correlation coefficients, r ≥ 0.9956. The method offered ultra-trace detection of selected PAHs in the range of 0.002 to 0.5 µg/L, and negligible matrix effects in determining selected PAHs with relative recovery average within the range of 92.6 to 109.6% in apple juice. The advantages of applying this method for the extraction of PAHs include rapidity, simple operation, as well as small consumption of organic extraction solvent, which is beneficial for routine analysis.&nbsp

    PREVALENCE OF PARASITE INFESTATIONS AMONG FOUR COMMERCIALLY EXPLOITED WILD SHELLFISH SPECIES IN SETIU WETLAND, TERENGGANU, MALAYSIA

    The lagoon of Setiu Wetlands has high biodiversity of bivalve’s species. The majority of villagers are fisherman and bivalves are one of their income-generating activities. Studies on parasites of bivalves are important to our knowledge for maintenance of natural resources. This study investigated the parasite prevalence among four commercially exploited shellfish species from Setiu Wetland, Malaysia. A total of 120 samples were collected during the low tide time for four shellfish species which were Polymesoda expansa, Meretrix meretrix, Anadara sp. and Crassostrea iredalei. The bivalve specimens were measured on its length with and without shell, width, height, weight and microscopically examined on the presence of parasites focused at gills, muscle and digestive tract. The discovered macroparasite were fixed into 70% ethanol solution for preservation. In this study, Anadara sp. was highest infestation of parasites, while Polymesoda expansa has the least infestation of parasites. There were occurrence of copepod and Nematopsis sp. in Anadara sp., M. meretrix and C. iredalei. Apart from that, there were other parasites observed in four bivalve species such as metacercaria, cestode larvae, Panopeus sp., Pinnotheres sp., Balanus sp. and unidentified ciliates. Ecological factors, feeding activity, season and abundance of definitive host were known to be elements that altered the prevalence of parasites in host. Upon the observation, a high prevalence of Nematopsis sp. were observed in three species of bivalves except P. expansa.     EFFECT OF PHOTO-SELECTIVE NETTING ON GROWTH DEVELOPMENT OF GREEN AMARANTH (Amaranthus viridis L.)

    Green amaranth (Amaranthus viridis L.) is one of the most popular leafy vegetables cultivated in Malaysia. Photo-selective netting is a revolutionary agricultural-technical idea, allowing traditional nets to be improved to a sophisticated level, which can impact microclimate and solar radiation as well as protect crops from pests. This study aims to investigate the growth performance of green amaranth under different three different treatments of photo-selective nets including black, and yellow shade nets and control. The assessed physiological, pre-harvest and post-harvest parameters were air temperature and relative humidity, measurement of absorption of photosynthetically active radiation (PAR), plant height, number of leaves, and dry weight. This study found that the yellow shade net showed the best performance in plant growth with the average difference in plant height (4.11 cm), average leaves number (7 leaves) and average dry weight (18.58 mg) were the highest compared to black shade net and control (without shading). In conclusion, photo-selective yellow shade net was able to enhance the growth development of green amaranth and could be applied in the large scale production to boost the growth and yield of leafy vegetables

    THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN GOVERNMENT EXPENDITURE ON SELECTED SECTORS TOWARDS ECONOMIC GROWTH IN MALAYSIA

    Government expenditure plays an important role in the country’s economic growth. Budget allocations through the annual budget presented have their strategies to ensure that the allocated budget can improve the growth and development in Malaysia and also can be enjoyed by all Malaysian. The government’s expenditure has contributed to the expansion of this country’s development from various sectors. However, there are various problems involving government expenditure such as low level of health, homeless poor people, weak public transportation and illegal immigrants. The purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between government expenditure on health, education, housing, transportation and defence sectors towards economic growth. The data used is secondary data from 1980-2017 for 38 years from the Department of Statistics, Malaysia and World Bank Data. The method used in this study is Descriptive Analysis and Autoregressive Distributed Lagged Model (ARDL). The result showed that economic growth and government expenditure on health, education, transportation, and defence has a long-run relationship. Therefore, the government should increase more expenditure on crucial sectors such as education, transportation, defence and health that will strengthen economic growth in the long run

    TOURIST PERCEPTION TOWARDS RECREATION CENTRE IN MALAYSIA

    Recreation centre become one of the centres for a family to bring their children for recreation and leisure activity. Moreover, the recreation centre is the place for education, research, and awareness to the public. The main objective of this study is to investigate factors that relate to tourist perception in their reference to their interest, expectations, satisfaction, and a general understanding of the recreation centre. The antecedent factors are awareness of the surrounding environment, visitor experiences, and destination image. This research using a quantitative method via a survey questionnaire and a domestic tourist as a sample. A sample is consist of 384 respondent of domestic tourists who visited the recreation centre in Malaysia. This survey has been done in Zoo Negara, Aquaria KLCC, and FRIM, Kepong. The results show the majority of respondents are female, age below 26 years old, single, obtained higher education, working, and had an income below RM1000. The respondents are mostly from Selangor and their purpose of visit to the recreation centre is for leisure and recreation. The major source of information to visit the recreation centre was from the internet. There were have a significant relationship between an antecedent factor with tourist perception towards the recreation centre in Malaysia. The result of this study will help marketers and management of recreation centres to understand the perceptions of their future visitors. Based on the study, it is should be used as an initial benchmark for the future study, however, they may execute a depth analysis on the tourism that related to the recreation centre in Malaysia

    ACCOUNTING STUDENTS’ PREFERENCES TOWARDS LEARNING STRATEGIES IN UNIVERSITI MALAYSIA TERENGGANU

    Learning preferences among undergraduate accounting students might vary considerably and are still largely unexplored although their findings might be useful for lecturers to improve learning and teaching strategies. Students’ preferences in selecting the appropriate learning strategies can help improve their understanding and lead to improved competency for better academic achievement. This study examined students’ preferences towards learning strategies and the differences in learning strategies among accounting students in Universiti Malaysia Terengganu, between genders. The data were collected using online survey completed by accounting undergraduate students from Year 1 until Year 3 for the academic session 2018/2019. 150 students responded to the online survey, with 32% response rate. Using a revised two-factor version of the Study Process Questionnaire, the survey assessed deep and surface approaches in learning preferred by the students. The results showed that deep learning approach scored a higher mean of 3.36 compared to surface learning and gender was found insignificantly related to the preferred learning approach. This finding suggests that the use of deep approach (for example, active learning or student-centered learning) is to encourage better learning process that would contribute to better academic performance and teaching strategy practices among accounting students

    Does Household Food Insecurity Reflects Diet Quality of Children? A Study among the B40 Families in Pendang, Kedah

    Food insecurity is interrelated with low food supply consumption which have high disposition to poor diet quality. However, less study has been done in assessing the relationship between food insecurity and diet quality of children in Malaysia. Therefore, this study objectives are to determine food insecurity level and diet quality of children from B40 families in Kedah. This cross-sectional study was carried out among 106 children aged 7 – 12 years old from one selected district in Pendang, Kedah. Radimer/Cornell Hunger was used to determine food insecurity level of the children, while diet quality of the children was assessed by applying modified Healthy Eating Index (HEI) 2005. Based on the result, 43.4% of the household were categorized as food secure while 56.6% were food insecure. Those food insecure were classified into three levels and the study found that 61.0% were household food insecure, 28.0% were individual food insecure and 11.0% of the household were child hunger. About 28.3% of them had poor diet quality, 69.8% of them had diet that needs improvements and only 1.9% of them had good diet quality. However, there was no significant relationship found between food insecurity and diet quality of these children (p = 0.436). This is somehow indicated that food insecurity does not reflect the diet quality of children from the B40 families in this study

    NUTRITIONAL COMPOSITION AND ANTIOXIDANT PROPERTIES OF GOLDEN LILY AND CHOKANAN MANGO (Mangifera indica) PEELS

    Mango is one of the popular fruits in Malaysia and has been used in the jam, puree and drinks production. Production of food products using mango pulp has generated by-products such as peel and kernel. Disposal of these by-products will cause environmental pollution if not properly treated. Mango peel contains high nutritional composition and antioxidant properties and can be utilised as food ingredients. The objectives of this study are to determine the nutritional composition and antioxidant properties of the peels of two selected mango varieties, namely Golden Lily and Chokanan. Analysis of proximate composition, minerals, total phenolic compounds, carotenoids, and antioxidant activity (DPPH and ABTS) were carried out in this study. Results of the proximate analysis showed that the peels of both mango varieties were a good source of fibre, which were 14.45% for Golden Lily and 14.89% for Chokanan. The crude fat, crude protein, and total carbohydrate of Chokanan peel (2.62%, 4.67% and 57.74%, respectively) were higher than the Golden Lily peel (1.13%, 2.90% and 53.16%, respectively). Contrastingly, the moisture content of the Golden Lily peel (24.67%) was higher than the Chokanan peel (16.61%). Potassium was the main mineral found in both Golden Lily and Chokanan mango peels (8802.10 mg/kg and 8443.60 mg/kg, respectively). The total phenolic compounds in the peels of both mango varieties were not significantly different. The Chokanan peel contained a higher carotenoids content (35.26 μg/g) than the Golden Lily peel (15.03 μg/g). The ABTS value for Chokanan peel was higher (1406.00 μmol TE/g) than Golden Lily peel (1314.00 μmol TE/g). This study showed that Chokanan and Golden Lily mango peels have the potential to be utilised as ingredient in food products due to their high fibre content
