VISITOR’S WILLINGNESS TO PAY FOR CONSERVATION AND IMPROVEMENTS OF HUTAN LIPUR ULU BENDUL, NEGERI SEMBILAN

    No full text
Hutan Lipur Ulu Bendul is a recreational forest that serves as a place to escape from hustle and bustle of city life. However, the excessively large number of visitors has affected the forest, as the tourists lack conservation awareness. The main objectives of this study are (i) to analyse the visitors’ Willingness to Pay (WTP) for conservation and environmental protection of Hutan Lipur Ulu Bendul and (ii) to observe the determinants of visitors’ WTP, such as education level, income, and age. This study involved about 150 randomly selected visitors at Hutan Lipur Ulu Bendul, Kuala Pilah. About five sets of questionnaires were distributed to 150 respondents during data collection. From the three variables tested, only household income had a significant effect on the WTP for conservation, estimated with a hypothetical method, double-bounded Contingent Valuation Method (CVM). The findings are crucial in understanding the value that visitors place on forest conservation and improvements by describing the level of environmental awareness among visitors

University Course Timetabling (UCT) problem is a combinatorial optimization problem in which a set of events has to be scheduled in timeslots and located in a suitable room by considering all the constraint involved. A feasible timetable plays an important role in ensuring the tasks or events are carried out appropriately. However, producing one is not an easy task due to its large data size and variety of requirements involved. In this research, mathematical model using Mixed Integer Linear Programming is applied for the university course timetabling problem. To validate the MILP model, data from Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT) Academic Management Department is obtained. The data consists of 27 programmes, 1261 classes of 265 core courses, 59 venues and 50 timeslots. Advanced Interactive Multidimensional Modelling System (AIMMS) mathematical software with CPLEX solver is used as a tool to solve the mathematical model. The research showed that the model developed is applicable to the university course timetabling problem. An optimized solution is achieved in which fulfils the preferences of the users involved. The outcome of this research would indirectly assist the administrative staff who will be in charge in producing an effective course timetable for the university

IDENTIFICATION OF FUNGAL ISOLATES ASSOCIATED WITH ANTHRACNOSE DISEASE ON CHILLI AND ITS PATHOGENIC LEVEL

    No full text
Many chilli producers in Malaysia are facing a huge problem of anthracnose disease that infect the chilli fruits either at pre- or post-harvest stage. Due to this infection, the chilli fruits become rotten and could be colonized by grey conidial masses which is unfit for human consumption and cannot be sold. This study was aimed to isolate the fungal species associated with anthracnose symptoms collected from several mini-markets near Gong Badak, Terengganu. Pathogenicity test was conducted for all these isolates to evaluate their pathogenic level. Based on the results, five fungal isolates were successfully isolated and morphologically identified as Colletotrichum spp. All these isolates were labelled as UMTT46C, UMTT48C, UMTT50C, UMTT52C and UMTT54C. From these, fungal isolate (UMTT54C) showed the highest pathogenic level with disease severity (DS), 68.9%. Other Colletotrichum spp. recorded percentage of DS ranged from 53.3% to 60%. Identification of fungal isolates and their pathogenic level from the infected chilli is very important to assist in control strategy which can further provide a good protection measure for many chilli producers

    No full text
The synthesis of magnesium oxide nanoparticles (MgO-NPs) using green synthesis has increased. In this study, green synthesis of MgO-NPs has been carried out by using Annona muricata. Annona muricata, popularly known as “graviola” or soursop, is a typical plant in countries with a tropical climate. The MgO-NPs were synthesised by mixing 30 mL of Annona muricata extract with 5 mM magnesium nitrate solution. The synthesised MgO-NPs were characterised by using Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA) to identify the calcination temperature to form MgO-NPs, followed by a Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) analysis, X-ray Diffraction (XRD) analysis and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). From TGA, temperatures at 700 and 900 have been chosen. For FTIR characterisation, the 450-600 cm-1 peaks were assigned to MgO stretching vibrations. Under SEM, the morphology of synthesised MgO-NPs seems to be in irregular shape and the aggregation of particles were observed

    No full text
The deep-draft semisubmersible (DDSS) platform is well known due to its favourable vertical motion routine. However, DDSS platforms face a serious challenge in vortex-induced motion (VIM) due to the changing forces of the column. A computational fluid dynamic (CFD) simulation using AcuSolve is conducted to investigate the effect of a twisted-square column with different twisted angles, 0°, 22.5°, 45.0°, 67.5° and 90.0°, on the VIM responses and performance at current incidence angles of 0° and 45°.Platform models at a scale of 1:70 are studied to determine that the alteration of vortex shedding due the separation line at the twisted column expressively influences the mean and fluctuation of hydrodynamic forces and motion. In particular interest is the drag and lift coefficients, surge, sway amplitudes, as well as the yaw motion of the DDSS platform. The simulation was conducted at a velocity of 0.16 m/s

PUSH AND PULL PERSPECTIVES: TRAVEL MOTIVATION TO COASTAL TOURISM IN CASE OF REDANG ISLAND

    No full text
The tourism industry plays a large role in the development of many countries, including Malaysia. Unfortunately, the lockdowns caused by the COVID-19 pandemic brought global tourism to a standstill. Though most of the travel curbs have been eased, public health rules still pose challenges to the industry. In the light of the changes in travel preferences among tourists during this unprecedented time, this work sought to gain a better understanding of travel motivation and behaviour in this situation. Since push and pull factors are the most commonly used theory in evaluating tourists’ behaviour, it is utilised in this conceptual paper to investigate the relationship between destination image, tourists’ emotion, satisfaction, and loyalty in the context of Laguna Redang Island Resort. Moreover, tourists’ daily emotional well-being needs to be considered in assessing their travel intention in the post-pandemic situation. The tests for the propositions in the conceptual model of this study revealed that pleasure is an important factor for behavioural intention. The impact of factors was empirically supported by the study. Next, this study presents factors to predict tourists’ loyalty that are useful for future studies. This study also verifies the influence of push factor for tourism consumption on pull factor for destination selection. Plus, in the proposed framework, satisfaction has a mediator role. Overall, the present work contributes to the body of knowledge and provides useful recommendations for tourism authorities

EFFECT OF DIFFERENT PACKAGING MATERIALS ON THE QUALITY OF STINGLESS BEE HONEY (Heterotrigona itama) DURING STORAGE

    No full text
Bee can be categorised as either honeybee or a stingless bee. Both produce honey, which is beneficial for human consumption because it is rich in nutrients. However, there is no study done on its quality affected by packaging materials during storage. This study evaluated the physicochemical properties of stingless bee honey (Heterotrigona itama) when stored in different packaging materials, clear and amber glass bottles, and clear and amber plastic bottles, stored at room temperature for three months. Honey was harvested from the pots to test its quality after some time. The physicochemical analyses were colour L*, a* and b*, pH value, total titratable acidity, antioxidant activity, ashes, moisture content and water activity. During three months of storage, none of the storage materials showed a significant difference from each other. If the honey storage is extended, honey stored in amber glass will give better quality at the end of the storage day due to the consistent parameter such as antioxidant activity, which is considered one of the valuable components in stingless bee honey
