Applying Al-Ta’lil bi Al-Hikmah to Social Media Use: A Complementary to the Maqasid Shariah Approach in Islamic Digital Ethics
The rapid expansion of social media has generated significant ethical challenges, including misinformation, harmful online discourse, privacy erosion, and excessive digital consumption. Although Islamic ethics has increasingly engaged these issues, primarily through Maqasid Shariah-based frameworks, existing approaches often remain too general to guide the everyday moral decisions faced by individual users in digitally mediated environments. Addressing this gap, this study examines the application of al-Ta’lil bi al-Hikmah, a jurisprudential method that derives ethical judgment from the underlying wisdom (hikmah) of Islamic norms, to contemporary social media use. Employing a qualitative jurisprudential analysis grounded in usul fiqh, the study conducts an interpretive textual analysis of Quranic injunctions, Prophetic traditions, and classical juristic discussions to identify core ethical wisdom related to communication, privacy, moderation, and accountability. These insights are then thematically applied to key domains of social media practice, including content sharing, online criticism, time management, and the ethical implications of algorithmic influence at the level of user behaviour. The analysis demonstrates that a hikmah-centred approach enables more nuanced moral discernment than rule-based or exclusively Maqasid-oriented models by translating higher ethical objectives into actionable guidance for individual digital conduct. Conceptually and methodologically, this study advances Islamic digital ethics by operationalising al-Ta’lil bi al-Hikmah as a complementary framework that refines Maqasid reasoning at the micro-ethical level. In doing so, it offers a principled yet flexible model for ethical social media engagement that aligns individual integrity with broader Islamic moral objectives
ONLINE TA‘ĀRUF, DIGITAL VISUALIZATION, AND THE LIMITS OF VIEWING ‘AWRAH: A HADITH-BASED REINTERPRETATION IN ISLAMIC LAW WITHIN THE DIGITAL BETROTHAL PROCESS
Purpose - This study was motivated by the prevalence of online ta‘āruf practices that rely on the exchange of photos and visualizations of women's bodies, giving rise to debates about the limits of viewing the ‘awrah in Islamic law. This study aims to analyze this permissibility through a reinterpretation of the hadiths on khiṭbah and to formulate normative and ethical boundaries for viewing women's ‘awrah that are relevant to the characteristics of digital media in online ta‘āruf practices.
Methods - This qualitative study used a normative-contextual approach. Primary data were sourced from the Instagram social media account @taaruf. co.id as an online ta‘āruf service provider and khiṭbah hadiths. Secondary data included fiqh literature, hadith commentary, and contemporary studies on digital ethics and online ta‘āruf . Data analysis was conducted through tracing the 'illat (legal rationale), contextual reading, and normative-ethical analysis of online ta’aruf practices.
Findings – This study found a new form of online ta‘āruf practice characterized by repeated visual exchanges, image storage, and visual consumption that is not always accompanied by a clear commitment to marriage. The reinterpretation of the khiṭbah hadiths was carried out by repositioning the 'illat of the permissibility of seeing, from mere visual permissibility to a limited means for making the decision to marry and preventing future regret. Based on this repositioning, this study formulates normative boundaries for viewing women's ‘awrah that emphasize the connection between permissibility and the goal of marriage. This study reformulates the ethics of viewing women’s ‘awrah in online ta‘āruf, which includes respect for women's karāmah, moral responsibility, goal orientation, and self-control in the digital space.
Contribution/limitations - This study contributes to the development of contemporary Islamic legal ethics by offering a relational ethical framework for users and online ta‘āruf platforms, although it is still limited to normative studies and requires reinforcement through further empirical research
Islamic Digital Wellbeing: An Islamic Education Perspective on Overcoming FOMO in Generation Z: Kesejahteraan Digital Islami (Islamic Digital Wellbeing): Perspektif Pendidikan Islam dalam Mengatasi FOMO pada Generasi Z
The Fear of Missing Out (FOMO) phenomenon, widely experienced by Generation Z, arises from excessive social media use and a lack of spiritual balance in digital life. This condition leads to anxiety, dependency, and psychological imbalance, which negatively impacts the quality of life. To address these issues, this study aims to formulate an Islamic Digital Wellbeing model as a conceptual approach to reducing FOMO by integrating Islamic values and digital psychology theories. This study employs a Library Research method, examining various Islamic literature, modern psychology, and digital wellbeing theories to construct a comprehensive conceptual model. The results indicate that Islamic values such as wasathiyyah (balance), tazkiyah an-nafs (purification of the soul), adab (etiquette), and ihsan (spiritual awareness) serve as the primary foundation for Islamic digital wellbeing. The resulting model consists of five aspects: digital tazkiyah, niyyah and maqasid, digital adab, ihsan connectivity, and digital wasathiyyah. These aspects play a crucial role in helping Generation Z manage technology use proportionally, meaningfully, and as a form of worship. Based on these findings, this study suggests that the Islamic Digital Wellbeing model be implemented in character education, Islamic digital literacy, and youth development programs, while also serving as a basis for further empirical research in the educational and social fields.
Harnessing Islamic FinTech for disaster risk financing: Innovative strategies for economic resilience and sustainable development
IntroductionNatural and human-induced disasters have become more frequent and severe, resulting in significant economic losses, particularly in developing countries. Traditional disaster risk financing mechanisms often fail to adequately serve vulnerable populations due to high costs, limited accessibility, and delayed disbursements. This study explores how Islamic finance principles, when integrated with financial technology (FinTech), can provide scalable, Sharia-compliant solutions for enhancing disaster risk financing (DRF).ObjectivesThe primary objective of this research is to examine the potential of combining Islamic finance mechanisms such as Zakat, Sadaqah, and Waqf with FinTech innovations, including blockchain, smart contracts, and mobile platforms, to improve accessibility, efficiency, and transparency in DRF. This study aims to identify how these integrated solutions can enhance economic resilience, financial inclusion, and alignment with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).MethodA mixed-methods approach was employed, utilizing case studies from Southeast Asia, the Middle East, and Africa, alongside a survey (n=100) and expert interviews (n=12). The case studies focused on the application of Islamic finance and FinTech innovations in disaster-prone regions. Surveys and interviews provided empirical insights into the effectiveness of these solutions and the challenges faced in implementing them.ResultsThe study found that Islamic FinTech platforms raised an average of $24 million per disaster event, reduced disbursement times by 30-40%, and achieved adoption rates of 45-70%. Despite challenges such as regulatory barriers and digital literacy gaps, these solutions significantly enhanced financial inclusion and economic resilience, aligning with SDG 1, SDG 9, and SDG 13.ImplicationsThe research suggests that integrating Islamic finance with FinTech can provide a transformative approach to DRF, offering more inclusive, efficient, and transparent solutions. Policy recommendations include the development of unified Sharia-compliant FinTech standards and infrastructure investments to scale these solutions in disaster-prone regions.Originality/NoveltyThis study contributes to the emerging field of Islamic FinTech by bridging the gap between Islamic finance principles and modern digital technologies to enhance disaster risk financing, particularly in developing and Muslim-majority countries
Designing a Cultural-Strategic Islamic Communication Audit Model for non-transportation asset governance in PT Kereta Api Indonesia SubDIVRE 1.1 Aceh
IntroductionThe governance of non-transportation assets in state-owned railway enterprises requires not only legal and administrative control but also effective organizational communication. In Aceh, where socio-religious norms strongly influence public legitimacy, communication practices surrounding asset safeguarding and commercialization face distinctive challenges. Despite the strategic value of railway land and buildings, communication audits have not been systematically institutionalized, creating coordination gaps and social resistance.ObjectivesThis study analyzes the implementation of communication audits in managing non-transportation assets at PT Kereta Api Indonesia SubDIVRE 1.1 Aceh and formulates a culturally grounded audit model suited to Aceh’s socio-religious context.MethodThe research employs a descriptive qualitative and evaluative approach. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, participatory observation, and document analysis involving company leaders, asset managers, operational staff, commercial partners, and community representatives. Informants were selected using purposive and snowball sampling. Data credibility was strengthened through triangulation and member checks, and analysis followed an interactive model of data reduction, display, and verification.ResultsFindings indicate that communication audits are not formally structured but occur informally through meetings and routine evaluations. Internal communication remains predominantly top-down, with limited cross-unit coordination and insufficient communication competencies. Externally, while negotiation with partners is perceived as transparent, broader stakeholder engagement lacks cultural adaptation and participatory dialogue. Resistance to asset policies often stems from inadequate alignment with Acehnese values such as deliberation, communal consensus, and the mediating role of religious and traditional leaders.ImplicationsThe study proposes a Cultural-Strategic Islamic Communication Audit Model that integrates systematic planning, exploratory and focused interviews, strategic analysis, follow-up mechanisms, and participatory evaluation. Embedding local socio-religious values into communication governance can enhance transparency, legitimacy, and conflict prevention in asset commercialization.Originality/NoveltyThis research advances communication audit scholarship by contextualizing it within Islamic governance and local cultural structures, offering a model that bridges organizational communication strategy and socio-religious legitimacy in public asset management
Integrating Islamic Montessori in Digital Learning at Brainy Bunch Cyberjaya Malaysia
Digital technology advancements have brought changes in the behavior and personality of school aged students. Especially in the use of gadgets, which tend to impact decreased learning motivation, concentration, and learning responsibility. However, in an international school, gadget use has become a directed learning tool through the integration of Islamic values and the Montessori approach. This study focuses on the development of student independence and discipline in gadget use at Brainy Bunch Cyberjaya, Malaysia. The data obtained through observation and interviews show that the development of student character at Brainy Bunch Cyberjaya Malaysia is carried out through habit formation, reinforcement of Islamic values, and management of gadget usage time, with consistent supervision from teachers. The findings of this study is parental involvement at home plays an important role in reinforcing the positive habits developed at school, thereby creating continuity between education at school and the family environment. This study has limitations as it was conducted in one school with a specific context, so the results cannot be generalized to all educational institutions
Sibling Relationship Quality and Loneliness Among Adolescents Living with Siblings with Special Needs
Adolescence is a critical developmental period in which social relationships play a central role in psychological well-being, and adolescents who live with siblings with special needs, often referred to as glass children, may be particularly vulnerable to loneliness. This study aimed to examine the association between sibling relationship quality and loneliness among adolescents who have and live with siblings with special needs. Using a quantitative correlational design, data were collected from 87 adolescents aged 12 to 18 years through purposive sampling. Loneliness was measured using the UCLA Loneliness Scale Version 3, while sibling relationship quality was assessed with the Sibling Relationship Questionnaire, covering warmth and closeness, power, conflict, and rivalry. Correlational analyses were conducted using Pearson and Spearman methods following tests of normality and linearity. The results indicated a significant negative association between warmth and closeness in sibling relationships and loneliness, suggesting that higher emotional closeness and affection between siblings are linked to lower levels of loneliness among glass children. In contrast, the dimensions of power, conflict, and rivalry showed weak and statistically non-significant relationships with loneliness, although their directional patterns varied. Additional analyses revealed that female adolescents reported significantly higher levels of loneliness than males, while no significant differences were found based on age group or birth order. Overall, the findings highlight the central role of emotional warmth and closeness in sibling relationships as a protective factor against loneliness in adolescents living with siblings with special needs. These results underscore the importance of fostering supportive sibling interactions within families as part of efforts to promote adolescent mental health in this population
Urgensi Rancangan Undang-Undang Lembaga Kepresidenan sebagai Instrumen Penguatan Checks and Balances
This study aims to examine the urgency of resubmitting the Presidential Institution Bill by considering various issues that have arisen in recent years, such as the president's authority in legislation, limitations on presidential involvement in elections, presidential authority during transitional periods, and restrictions on the president in granting amnesty and abolition. The method used is normative legal research with a statutory approach and descriptive qualitative literature study. The research results indicate that due to the absence of a Presidential Institution Law, the president is highly likely to abuse power and the system of checks and balances weakens. First, the president's authority in the field of legislation is still too broad, particularly in issuing Government Regulations in Lieu of Law (Perppu), which could potentially lead to autocratic legalism. Second, there are no regulations regarding limits on the president's political involvement in elections, which could potentially give the president room to favor a particular candidate. Third, there are no restrictions on the president's actions during the transition period (lame duck), which opens the possibility for the president to make legal decisions that could disrupt the country's political stability. Fourth, there are no clear benchmarks for granting amnesty and abolition, which could potentially be used as tools for political transactions
Pengaruh Literasi Digital dan Kepercayaan terhadap Penggunaan Layanan Kependudukan: Studi Perubahan Data akibat Pemekaran: indonesia
The digital transformation of population administration services has become a strategic effort to enhance the efficiency of public services, especially in regions undergoing administrative expansion. This study aims to examine the influence of digital literacy, trustworthiness, and system quality on user behavior in utilizing the SIPENDUDUK online service in Pekanbaru, Indonesia. A quantitative approach was applied using a survey method involving 400 respondents, determined through Slovin’s formula with a 5% margin of error. Data were analyzed using Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) to assess both measurement and structural models. The results reveal that digital literacy and trustworthiness significantly affect users perceived usefulness and ease of use, which in turn influence their intention to use and actual usage behavior. Among these, trustworthiness was found to be the most dominant factor directly affecting the intention to use, while digital literacy enhances user perceptions of system benefits and usability. Although system quality contributes to perceived ease of use and usefulness, it does not directly influence the intention to use. These findings highlight the importance of strengthening public trust and improving digital competence to support the successful adoption of digital government services, particularly in the context of dynamic population data management in newly expanded areas.
Valuing what matters in Islamic microfinance: Sharia-based ethics and limits of murabahah
Purpose – This study examines the effect of murabahah financing on the net business income of small-scale fishermen in coastal Sumatra and tests whether Sharia value added (SVA), a maqāṣid al-sharīʿah-oriented multidimensional construct, mediates this relationship.Methodology – A structured survey was administered to 310 fishermen selected through clustered sampling across 31 coastal sub-districts in Sumatra. The proposed model was analyzed using partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) to estimate the direct and indirect effects of murabahah implementation, SVA, and net business income.Findings – Murabahah implementation had a positive and significant direct effect on fishermen’s net business income. Murabahah implementation also significantly affected SVA. However, SVA does not have a significant direct effect on net business income. Despite this, the indirect effect of murabahah implementation on income through SVA was statistically significant, indicating the mediating role of SVA. Implications – The results suggest that assessing Islamic microfinance solely through profitability or repayment metrics is insufficient. Evaluation frameworks should incorporate value-based indicators reflected in SVA, such as perceived fairness, ethical orientation, and social benefits, when designing and assessing murabahah-based financing programs for marginalized coastal communities.Originality – This study provides field-based evidence from the fisheries sector by empirically positioning SVA as a mediating mechanism linking murabahah implementation to financial performance, offering a value-oriented perspective that goes beyond procedural contractual compliance
