The development of the prototype includes research on IoT based security systems and smart home systems. The aim of the study is to demonstrate an IoT smart home system that can benefit the user and at the same time, create a safe environment for the society. The system designed is an IoT based smart home system security equipped with a series of sensors which consist of temperature, light, flood and motion all controlled by an Arduino UNO which acts as a device manager then connected to a Raspberry PI microcomputer. The Raspberry PI acts as the command centre and connects the system to the Internet. The reason why the system uses both Raspberry-PI and Arduino is for simplicity, efficiency and cost-effectiveness. The development successfully shows that it is possible to enhance the daily lives by efficiently reducing human contact and increasing security for a home which lead to reduced crime rates. Besides that, the utilization of an open source Flutter mobile application platform is proven to be as good as other paid platforms

Oil Palm Tree Detection from High Resolution Drone Image Using Convolutional Neural Network

    No full text
We propose a method to combine several image processing methods with Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) to perform palm tree detection and counting. This paper focuses on drone imaging, which has a high image resolution and is widely deployed in the plantation industry. Analyzing drone images is challenging due to variable drone flying altitudes, resulting in inconsistent tree sizes in images captured. Counting by template matching or fixed sliding window size method often produces an inaccurate count. Instead, our method employs frequency domain analysis to estimate tree size before CNN. The method is evaluated using two images, ranging from a few thousand trees to a few hundred thousand trees per image. We have summarized the accuracy of the proposed method by comparing the results with manually labelled ground truth

Simulation of 500 MHz Electromagnetic Interference Effect on Electrical Equipment with Various RF Grids and Enclosures

    No full text
This paper presents the modelling and simulation of a protection system for equipment in the oil and gas industry with various RF grids and enclosures against 500 MHz electromagnetic interference (EMI). COMSOL Multiphysics® Modelling software was used in this study. Electric and magnetic fields distributions were determined by using the Generalized Minimal Residual Method (GMRES) which was integrated into COMSOL Multiphysics® Modellingsoftware. Simulation results indicated that larger RF grid size contributed to the higher electric and magnetic field on equipment. Furthermore, without RF grid, electric and magnetic fields on the equipment were increased significantly (up to 100x). The maximum electric and magnetic fields were found to be near resonance enclosure size (299 mm for 500 MHz frequency source). The results showed that the presence of the RF grid for the EMI protection system was essential.   Manuscript received: 22 Jul 2019 | Revised: 2 Oct 2019 | Accepted: 3 Nov 2019 | Published: 13 Nov 201

An Absolute Phase Estimation Method for Interferometry Imagery

    No full text
Accurate interpretation of interferometric image requires an extremely challenging task based on actual phase reconstruction for incomplete noise observation. In spite of the establishment of comprehensive solutions, until now, a guaranteed means of solution method is yet to exist. The initially observed interferometric image is formed by 2?-periodic phase image that wrapped within (-?, ?]. Such inverse problem is further corrupted by noise distortion and leads to the degradation of interferometric image. In order to overcome this, an effective algorithm that enables noise suppression and absolute phase reconstruction of interferometric phase image is proposed. The proposed method incorporates an improved order statistical filter that is able to adjust or vary on its filtering rate by adapting to phase noise level of relevant interferometric image. Performance of proposed method is evaluated and compared with other existing phase estimation algorithms. The comparison is based on a series of computer simulated and real interferometric data images. The experiment results illustrate the effectiveness and competency of the proposed method

Viscous Dissipation Effects in A Microchannel Caused by Oscillation of One Surface

    No full text
The viscous dissipation effects in a microchannels caused by an oscillatory lower surface is investigated numerically. An asymmetric thermal boundary condition, particularly at upper plate insulated and lower plate with constant surface temperature is solved and analyzed in details graphically. Results reveal that effect of temperature field is strongly dependent on Brinkman number, while the thermal diffusion rate on the heat induced relies on the Prandtl number. The angular frequency has influence on the temperature field gradient

Modeling of Capacitance in A Supercapacitor

    No full text
A general supercapacitor model is developed by incorporating the effective surface area in the presence of pores. An analytical solution has been derived from the generic equation in Laplace domain based on the porous-electrode theory. This model demonstrates the effects of solution to matrix conductivity ratio, separator to electrode resistance ratio and discharge current density on the electrochemical impedance, capacitance and energy density of supercapacitor. The electrochemical impedance, capacitance and energy density of supercapacitor are calculated in this work. The maximum capacitance of 12.71 F/cm2 was computed in low frequency range in this device. The proposed model can be applied to simulate the characteristics of polymer-based supercapacitor in near future

A Dense Optical Flow Field Estimation with Variational Refinement

    No full text
Optical flow has long been a focus of research study in computer vision community. Researchers have established extensive work to solve the optical flow estimation. Among the published works, a notable work using variational energy minimization has been a baseline of optical flow estimation for a long time. Variational optical flow optimization solves an approximate global minimum in a well-defined nonlinear Markov Energy formulation. It works by first linearizing the energy model and uses a numerical method specifically successive over-relaxation (SOR) method to solve the resulting linear model. An initialization scheme is required for optical flow field in this iterative optimization method. In the original work, a zero initialization is proposed and it works well on the various environments with photometric and geometric distortion. In this work, we have experimented with different flow field initialization scheme under various environment setting. We found out that variational refinement with a good initial flow estimate using state-of-art optical flow algorithms can further improve its accuracy performance

Their advantages and disadvantages are reviewed and reported here. Comparison of the systems based on their performance, accuracy and limitations are presented as well

Enhancement of Undergraduate Time Management Through the Use of A Lab Schedule Reminder App

    No full text
Engineering undergraduates have to attend a certain number of laboratory hours to obtain their degree. Undergraduates have to attend up to 10 laboratory sessions per semester. One problem that arises from this requirement is complicated lab schedule management. This leads to increased missing of lab sessions and also redundancy in laboratory replacement sessions, which decreases efficiency of student and staff. This paper provides a solution to this problem by creating a lab schedule mobile application based on android development. The LabSkedule application reminds students on lab sessions, reduces hassle for students in viewing lab schedules and also managing their various lab sessions. A post application launch survey verified by 92% of students shows an improvement in efficiency in managing lab schedules and improved attendance to laboratory sessions
