    Optical and Structural Properties of V2O5 Electrochromic Thin Films

    The increase in global temperature has led to a significant surge in energy consumption within the air conditioning industry, resulting in environmental deterioration. Electrochromic (EC) windows have emerged as a promising solution to address these challenges. Vanadium pentoxide (V2O5) stands out among all metal oxide materials due to its remarkable EC properties, including substantial Li+ ion insertion capacity and multicolor capabilities. Despite the potential of V2O5, there remains a lack of comprehensive research on the structural and optical properties of V2O5 films with varying thicknesses. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the structural and optical properties of V2O5 thin films with thicknesses ranging from 46 to 344 nm. By employing the sol-gel spin coating method, V2O5 thin films were fabricated and analyzed using X-ray diffraction (XRD) spectroscopy and ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis) spectrophotometry. The fabricated V2O5 thin films with thicknesses of 46-274 nm demonstrated an average film transparency of 83 %. XRD analysis further revealed that the V2O5 thin films reached their peak crystallinity at a thickness of 344 nm. Moreover, CV analysis revealed that the V2O5 device, with a thickness of 274 nm, exhibited a cathodic peak current of -1.63 mA, indicating its excellent ability to facilitate Li+ ion diffusion. Additionally, CA measurements displayed a high optical modulation of 37.78 %. Ultimately, this research contributes to the development of energy-efficient solutions for sustainable environmental practices.     Intersemiotic Translation: Mat Dollah’s Batik Paintings of the Malay Folktale “Puteri Gunung Ledang”

    In translation studies, intersemiotic translation, which is the transference of a verbal sign system to a non-verbal sign, vice-versa or between two non-verbal modes, is a dynamically creative form of translation often involving literary works. Intersemiotic translations make it possible for written source texts to be brought to life in various artistic ways; they can usurp the power of the written word to transfer sense and meaning through unforgettable images from one culture to another. Folktales, documented in writings, have been translated into many different forms, such as in performing arts, animations, paintings, and illustrated books. This article examines the intersemiotic translation of the evergreen Malay folktale, “Puteri Gunung Ledang” or “The Princess of Mount Ledang” recreated in the form of batik paintings by the batik artist, Mat Dollah. The first specific objective of this study is to identify the variant and invariant features in Mat Dollah’s representation of the folktale by comparing his batik paintings to its original written account. The second objective is to investigate Mat Dollah’s skopos or purpose for recreating the folktale in his batik paintings in the ways that he has represented it. Six selected batik paintings of the folktale are analysed using multimodality approaches by Kress and van Leeuwen, including visual grammar, viewer networks, and modality (2006), social actor representations (van Leeuwen, 2008), and colour (van Leeuwen, 2011), to fulfil the first objective. Transcripts from an email interview with the painter are analysed to fulfil the second objective. In this study, Vermeer's Skopos Theory underpins the overall discussion. The findings show that one invariant core links the batik paintings to the written source text. Next, the skopos or purpose of the artist in producing these recreations in his own unique ways is strongly influenced by his personal experience, his work as an artist, and his perspectives of the world. Two key insights can be surmised about intersemiotic translations from these findings. Firstly, it is the translators’ intent that determines the translation strategies used, ultimately shaping the final translated product. Secondly, this makes the translator’s presence highly visible in intersemiotic translations

    Optimizing Medical IoT Disaster Management with Data Compression

    In today's technological landscape, the convergence of the Internet of Things (IoT) with various industries showcases the march of progress. This coming together involves combining diverse data streams from different sources and transmitting processed data in real-time. This empowers stakeholders to make quick and informed decisions, especially in areas like smart cities, healthcare, and industrial automation, where efficiency gains are evident. However, with this convergence comes a challenge – the large amount of data generated by IoT devices. This data overload makes processing and transmitting information efficiently a significant hurdle, potentially undermining the benefits of this union. To tackle this issue, we introduce "Beyond Orion," a novel lossless compression method designed to optimize data compression in IoT systems. The algorithm employs advanced techniques such as Lempel Ziv-Welch and Huffman encoding, while also integrating strategies like pipelining, parallelism, and serialization for greater efficiency and lower resource usage. Through rigorous experimentation, we demonstrate the effectiveness of Beyond Orion. The results show impressive data reduction, with up to 99% across various datasets, and compression factors as high as 7694.13. Comparative tests highlight the algorithm's prowess, achieving savings of 72% and compression factor of 3.53. These findings have significant implications. They promise improved data handling, more effective decision-making, and optimized resource allocation across a range of IoT applications. By addressing the challenge of data volume, Beyond Orion emerges as a significant advancement in IoT data management, marking a substantial step towards realizing the full potential of IoT technology

    Ensemble Learning-Powered URL Phishing Detection: A Performance Driven Approach

    With the rapid growth in the usage of the Internet, criminals have found new ways to engage in cyber-attacks. The most common and widespread attack is URL phishing. The proposed system focuses on improving phishing website detection using feature selection and ensemble learning. This model uses two datasets, DS-30 and DS-50, each with 30 and 50 features. Ensemble learning using a voting classifier was then applied to train the model, achieving more accuracy. The combination of HEFS with random forest distribution achieved 94.6% accuracy while minimizing the number of features used (20.8% of the base feature set). The classifier works in the proposed model, and the accuracy is 96% and 98% on the DS-30 and DS-50 datasets, respectively. The hybrid model uses a combination of different factors to distinguish phishing websites from legitimate websites

    A Bilingual Immersive Environment for Kids Learning

    Virtual Worlds (VWs) provide an improved learning experience as they have an increased level of user participation and technological involvement. They avoid content duplication and following a set of predefined rules to overcome the issues in game environments. VWs are coherent, persistent and collaborative social places that believe in realism through immersion. Client viewer software is used for user immersion in the form of avatars and in-world content creation in these environments. This work presents a simple bi-lingual environment developed for kids’ learning in English and Urdu using the well-known VW development framework called OpenSimulator (OpSim). It used Firestorm viewer for in-world content development and Linden Scripting Language for making the content dynamic and interactive. This work used Blender, Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator for developing images of different objects and adding their related dynamics before integrating them within the OpSim. It developed some basic activities for learning about colours, national personalities of Pakistan, Urdu alphabets, geometrical shapes and fruits. Bots were used to populate the content for making it more appealing. The proposed environment provides an arbitrary number of tries to perform each activity and guides kids through a real time positive feedback towards an improved learning. This work conducted initial validation tests of the proposed presence on standalone mode of OpSim framework with the help of domain experts, which confirmed the effectiveness of the proposed mechanism. However, it was suggested to conduct further validation on grid mode of OpSim framework. The developed environment shall be compared with other methods for learning purposes. It could incorporate more languages, activities and lessons. 3D working models of the alphabets, fruits and vegetables, and customized avatars capable of interacting with kids would offer more positive impact on learning. Similarly, the simple tasks could be extended to multiplayer collaborative games

    The rising cost of healthcare in Asian countries has become a matter of concern, reflecting an extensive influence of socioeconomic factors. This study highlighted that the financial burden on healthcare systems is crucial for ensuring sustainable and equitable access to medical services. However, the impact of socioeconomic factors on healthcare expenditures varies across countries and regions. Therefore, this study seeks to determine socioeconomic factors affecting healthcare expenditures in 10 Asian countries, utilising annual data starting from 2006 to 2020. By employing panel data analysis and the model of fixed effect with a feasible generalised least squares method, the finding shows that the impact of variations in factors such as life expectancy and urbanisation are positive and significant towards healthcare expenditures. Meanwhile, the gross domestic product (GDP) and unemployment rate adversely affect healthcare expenditures, and the findings indicate significant relationships between these variables and healthcare spending. Hence, the finding suggests that the government should look into the substantial healthcare costs and increase investments and funds to reduce the financial load on the country’s healthcare sectors and ensure that the healthcare industry is well-equipped to handle rising demand and deliver high-quality services to the public

    The revelations of kuih peneram among young generations

    In the rapidly evolving Malay community, the younger generations seem to be gradually losing touch with the rich heritage of traditional Malay kuih. The uniqueness of traditional Malay kuih lies in its versatility, as it can be served in any course of meals, as an appetiser, dessert, or even as a snack. The term  ‘traditional Malay kuih’ is broad, encompassing various sizes and methods of preparation, each bears dynamic flavours, either sweet or savoury. This study investigates the younger generations’  level of knowledge of  kuih peneram, from its general knowledge to the process of making it. The study involves seven informants from the younger generations and five kuih peneram entrepreneurs. Adopting a qualitative approach, the data collected were subjected to content analysis. The primary objective of this investigation is to gain insights into the knowledge and proficiency of the younger generations concerning the art of making kuih peneram

    The Silent Threat: Human Trafficking and Migrant Smuggling Procedures Through the Eyes of the Courts in Malaysia

    Human trafficking and migrant smuggling are two severe international crimes. It is a worldwide problem, and it is particularly pernicious. There are many parts to human trafficking, including forced labour, commercial sex, and organ harvesting. Human traffickers are known to use violent, manipulative, and deceptive methods and tactics to lure vulnerable targets into situations of exploitation. In Malaysia, it is estimated that millions of men, women, and children worldwide are victims of these crimes. The international community has adopted the protocols and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime in assisting member states to combat these internationally organised crimes. However, there are inadequate laws, both substantive and procedural, in place to deal with those who perpetrate such crimes, to bring them to account for their misdeeds, and to protect the victims of such crimes where such crimes continue to flourish because of the high profits

    The Power to Move the Eiffel Tower: Conceptual Metaphor and Persuasion in L2 Argumentative Writing

    This article analyses conceptual metaphors produced in argumentative writing by learners of English as a second language (L2). Founded on the Conceptual Metaphor Theory, it explores the linguistic metaphorical expressions which reflect an underlying conceptual metaphor. By drawing on Critical Metaphor Analysis, this research adopts a qualitative approach to analysing the concealed motivations behind a conceptual metaphor use. The data of this study comprise five argumentative essay samples collected from foundation year students at a private university in Malaysia. This study reveals how a conceptual metaphor is evoked to frame an argument in a way that is advantageous to the participants, particularly in establishing their stance on the proposition that social media is advantageous rather than disadvantageous to its users. Seven conceptual metaphors identified from the five samples of writing are related to social media, namely global mass gathering, loudspeaker, free society, accommodation, teacher, strong force and maze. While the first six metaphors serve as rhetorical tools to aid the participants in establishing arguments, the last metaphor is raised in the counterclaim section to illustrate how the opposition could equally rely on conceptual metaphors to establish its viewpoint. In instances where the metaphors are deployed as rhetorical devices, the participants’ covert intention to convince readers of their standpoint is achieved by utilising the conceptual metaphors to illuminate abstract ideas, arouse positive or negative emotions in readers, indicate positive or negative evaluations and evoke an ideology

    GoHoliday: Development of An Improvised Mobile Application for Boutique Hotels and Resorts

    One of the main challenges boutique hotels and resorts face is the direct outreach to tourists and customers. As a result, these independent hotels often resort to online platforms such as Agoda and Airbnb to expand their customer base. However, this approach comes at the cost of losing revenue to Online Travel Agencies (OTAs) that solely focus on room sales, hindering the establishment of a strong brand image for boutique hotels and resorts. Considering the heavy reliance on OTAs, this paper focuses on the development of GoHoliday, a cross-platform mobile app prototype that aims to bridge the gap between boutique hotels and users. This mobile application seamlessly integrates a booking engine, an AI assistant for trip planning, and an experience-sharing platform, enhancing the app's capabilities alongside other features. By implementing the GoHoliday mobile application, boutique hotels can maximize their reach and establish a distinct brand identity by directly serving their valuable guests with more personalized arrangements
