Realisme magis dan budaya masyarakat Melayu Nusantara dalam novel Cinta Sang Ratu: (Magical realism and Malay Nusantara culture in Cinta Sang Ratu)
No full textAliran realisme magis wujud dalam karya sastera yang mempunyai gabungan antara dua dunia, iaitu dunia nyata dengan dunia fantasi. Aliran ini memainkan peranan penting dalam dunia sastera kerana memperlihatkan budaya dan adat resam masyarakat di Nusantara melalui cerminan kehidupan yang digambarkan dalam karya sastera. Sehubungan itu, makalah ini berhasrat untuk mengenal pasti tiga prinsip realisme magis Wendy B. Faris (2004), iaitu irreducible elements, merging realms dan disruption of time, space and identity yang terdapat dalam novel Cinta Sang Ratu karya Ramlee Awang Murshid (2007). Selain itu, konteks budaya dan adat resam Melayu Nusantara yang sarat dengan unsur tradisional yang terakam dalam karya ini turut dianalisis menerusi prinsip unsettling doubts. Analisis kandungan diupayakan untuk menganalisis karya berpacukan teori realisme magis. Dapatan kajian menunjukkan bahawa unsur magis seperti unsur sihir, kepercayaan kepada tuhan dan gangguan waktu, yang merupakan antara unsur magis utama, ditonjolkan dalam novel Cinta Sang Ratu. Unsur magis ini memenuhi prinsip teori realisme magis yang telah dikenal pasti. Prinsip realisme magis membuktikan kewujudan gabungan antara dunia nyata dan dunia magis melalui unsur-unsur yang telah dinyatakan. Selain itu, kajian ini juga memberi impak dari sudut pemahaman budaya masyarakat Melayu dari Nusantara, khususnya menerusi kesinambungan budaya seperti aspek Jenglot dan silat antara kedua-dua negara ini yang terdapat dalam Cinta Sang Ratu
ETHNOMUSICOLOGY-SINGING CHARACTERISTICS OF CHINESE POETRY CHORAL WORKS
No full textAncient Chinese poems chorus is a very important category in Chinese choral art, and it has obvious special characteristics. which are expressed in ancient languages, we need to use conventional language to understand its connotation and extension, so it leads to the composers and conductors need to do more work when facing the subject of ancient poems in order to interpret it perfectly. This paper discusses some singing characteristics of choral works of ancient poems, and interprets how to sing and interpret choral works of ancient poems better from the perspective of a choral conductor. Research indicates that in performing ancient Chinese poetry choral pieces, there\u27s a focus on blending poetic rhythm with musical melody, skillfully employing harmony and counterpoint techniques. Additionally, conductors, while leading the choir in these ancient pieces, continuously innovate by incorporating modern musical elements, giving these choral works a contemporary edge and revitalizing the ancient poetry with fresh brilliance within the realm of choral art. The study can provide some beginners with reference, and provide music teachers, especially choral conductors, with some experience in rehearsing choral works of ancient poems. This article will use qualitative research methods to conduct research and exploration
NAVIGATING COVID-19: CHALLENGES AND SURVIVAL STRATEGIES FOR NIGERIAN PERFORMING ARTISTS
No full textThe global COVID-19 pandemic poses unprecedented challenges to Nigerian performing artists in the year 2020; thus, threatening livelihoods, artistic expression and mental well-being. All these in the midst of existing inadequate support systems, policies and infrastructure decay, thereby entrenching vulnerabilities. This paper therefore investigates the socio-economic and psychological impacts on the creative industry and in particular, Nigerian performing artists and identifies some survival strategies to surmounting the challenges during the pandemic. The study findings indicates that although, some of the measures put in place by the government were meant to tame the scourge of COVID-19, they eventually became the ‘nightmares’ of many especially in the creative industry across the country as their means of livelihood became threatened via job losses and so on. Thus, as a means of survival, some decided to hone their creativity by switching over to online and digital media platforms in dance, drama, music and other entertaining genres. Through qualitative methodology approach, the paper employs in-depth interviews and content analysis of internet platforms. In addition, the paper was guided by resilience theory, which concentrated on coping techniques, transformative tactics and adaptive methods engaged in by Nigerian performing artists. Conclusively, it is imperative for all the stakeholders to build strong support, make provision for sustainable resources for mental health, government financing and regulatory assistance with adequate preparation to embracing digital space in case of future occurrence
MALAY IDENTITY AND CINEMATIC REALISM: A CULTURAL ANALYSIS OF MUNAFIK (2016)
No full textThis article addresses the criticism that commercially oriented box office films often prioritize financial gain over the authentic portrayal of cultural identity. Focusing on the representation of Malay identity, this study examines the Malaysian film Munafik (2016). The analysis is guided by Mieke Bal’s cultural analysis (2002), André Bazin’s cinematic realism (1967), and Abdul Latif Bakar’s (2012) concept of Malay identity, applied to the film’s thematic, narrative, and visual elements. Employing a qualitative approach through document analysis and descriptive discussion, the study explores how Malay identity is constructed through the main characters and their struggles with supernatural disorders in a postmodern context.The findings reveal four key markers of Malay identity: strong Islamic faith and practices, respect for traditional healing methods, emphasis on family values, and the tension between modernity and spirituality. These elements demonstrate that Munafik integrates cultural authenticity with commercial appeal, proving that box office success and dignified cultural representation are not mutually exclusive. This study underscores Malay cinema’s role in sustaining cultural identity, urging policymakers, filmmakers, and scholars to advance authentic representation, educational value, and interdisciplinary research on identity in multicultural contexts
INTEGRATING ANIMATION INTO MUSIC VIDEO PRODUCTION: A CREATIVE PRACTICE APPROACH
No full textThis paper discusses the development of two animated music videos, “Engkau Dalam SemuaPerjalanan” and “Caballero”, undertaken as part of a Final Year Project at the School of Creative Industry Management and Performing Arts (SCIMPA), Universiti Utara Malaysia. The main objective of this project was to integrate animation as a medium to enhance musical storytelling, while simultaneously strengthening the visual and artistic identity of the client’s band. The methodology adopted for the project followed a structured three-phase process comprising pre-production, production, and post-production. During the pre-production stage, activities such as conceptual planning, storyboarding, and character design were carried out to ensure consistency with the narrative and client expectations. The production stage emphasized animation processes, visual aesthetics, and synchronization of movement with the rhythm and mood of the music. The post-production phase involved refinement through editing, visual effects, and audience feedback to ensure overall cohesion and quality. The findings indicate that the use of animation in music videos significantly enhances audience engagement, effectively conveys the emotional tone of the songs, and provides a stronger platform for branding and artistic representation. Overall, this project demonstrates how the combination of animation and music can create a dynamic form of digital storytelling that contributes to both creative expression and industry practice
MALAYSIAN YOUTH PERCEPTIONS OF SOLUTIONS TO ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES
No full textThe tourism industry is a significant contributor to greenhouse gas emissions and climate change. The future of environmental sustainability depends highly on today’s youth. It is therefore crucial that young people today actively participate in dealing with environmental issues besides conserving natural resources by acting responsibly towards the environment. This engagement will ensure ecological sustainability and the ability to meet the needs of future generations. In Malaysia, youth constitute almost half of the total population, hence highlighting the importance of their leadership in environmental sustainability initiatives, and the need to recognize their perspectives. Data for this study was collected from 90 youths aged between 20 to 24 years old. All the responses were categorised into four main themes namely, governance for environmental sustainability, education to enhance awareness, acculturation of environmentally friendly practices and involvement of all stakeholders. To the authors’ knowledge, this is among the first studies in Malaysia to examine the youth’s point of view on strategies for sustaining the environment
The usage of positive reinforcement to study its effect on learners\u27 motivation during online class.
No full textThis study investigates the effects of positive reinforcement on working adult learners’ motivation in online English learning. Grounded in Skinner’s operant conditioning theory, it explores how rewards and praise influence learners’ emotional responses and engagement during virtual lessons. Using a qualitative case study design, six adult learners enrolled in a part time English Proficiency II course at a university in northern Malaysia were interviewed through semi structured online sessions. Data were analysed thematically to identify the relationship between reinforcement and motivation. Findings reveal that positive reinforcement significantly enhances learners’ emotional states, particularly feelings of pride, happiness, and encouragement, thereby improving participation and persistence in online learning tasks. Furthermore, the study shows that intrinsic motivation, driven by self-improvement, confidence, and the importance of mastering English, plays a more dominant role than extrinsic factors such as workplace requirements. The study concludes that incorporating verbal praise and supportive feedback into online instruction can foster greater engagement and satisfaction. Recommendations include integrating structured reinforcement strategies in adult education and expanding future research to broader demographic contexts. 
IMPLEMENTATION OF ENTERPRISE RISK MANAGEMENT AS A STRATEGY FOR INCREASING COMPETITIVE ADVANTAGE: STUDY AT COMPANIES IN CENTRAL KALIMANTAN
No full textThis research investigated the impact of Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) and organizational culture on competitive advantage (CA) in cigarette companies in Kalimantan. Through in-depth interviews with three key informants (a branch manager, a sales supervisor, and a finance account manager), the study revealed that effective ERM, particularly in managing external risks like regulatory changes and market fluctuations and internal risks such as operational challenges and HR issues, is crucial for achieving CA. Additionally, an organizational culture that fosters innovation, risk-based performance assessment, and effective HR management significantly contributes to the success of ERM and strengthens CA. Companies can better manage risks and enhance their competitive position by adapting to market changes and embracing innovation. While this research offers valuable insights, its generalizability may be limited due to its focus on cigarette companies in Central Kalimantan and its relatively small sample size. Future research could broaden the scope to include a broader range of companies and regions to gain a more comprehensive understanding. This study\u27s original contribution lies in exploring the interplay between ERM and organizational culture in the context of CA in the cigarette industry. The findings emphasize the importance of integrating risk management and organizational culture as a strategic approach to maintain and strengthen competitive advantage, providing valuable implications for research and practice in this field
“NEW REGIONALISM” IN THE MIDDLE EAST AND NORTH AFRICA REGION (MENA): AN EVALUATION ON ITS CHARACTERISTICS
No full textIn the late twentieth century, regional dynamics in international relations reemerged, sparking a renewed interest, as evidenced by the emergence of the term “new regionalism.” The global economy has become increasingly defined by regionalism. Both developed and developing countries are turning to regional cooperation as a vital tool to counter global challenges and issues. This study aims to analyse the features of “new regionalism” in the context of the Middle East and North Africa region (MENA). The study begins by identifying and explaining the key features of “new regionalism” that facilitate cooperation between countries. It then evaluates and examines the following features of regionalism in the MENA region: 1) geographical proximity; 2) trade liberalisation; 3) economic interdependence; 4) non-discrimination; and 5) unilateral reform. To analyse the current status of regionalism in the MENA region and clarify the level and extent of cooperation, the research method proposes utilising a set of indicators to refer to each of these features. The research findings are summarised below: Despite some encouraging signs of regional cooperation in the MENA region, it is distinguished by slow free trade, a weak regional import-export process, unclear unilateral reform, and a lack of collaboration
MALAY NATIONALISM AND THE PAN-MALAYSIAN ISLAMIC PARTY: ANALYSING THE PARTY’S ROLE IN ADDRESSING GLOBAL MUSLIM UMMAH CHALLENGES AND CONFLICTS
No full textPan-Malaysian Islamic Party (PAS) is a prominent political party in Malaysia that has long championed Malay nationalism. This study examines PAS\u27s political connections and approach in addressing Muslim issues on a global scale, mainly through the lens of Malay nationalism. A qualitative methodology was employed to analyse key documents, speeches, and policies of PAS leaders over the years. The findings revealed that PAS has actively sought to align its nationalist agenda with broader Islamic causes, forging connections with like-minded organisations and movements internationally. PAS has positioned itself as a defender of Malay rights and interests while advocating for implementing Islamic principles in governance and society. The party\u27s interpretation of Malay nationalism is deeply rooted in its Islamic ideology, seeking to reconcile ethnic and religious identities. This study contributes to the understanding of how a regional political party, such as PAS navigates the complex interplay between nationalism, religion, and global affairs. It highlights PAS\u27s efforts to project its influence beyond the Malaysian context and situate the Malay nationalist struggle within the broader framework of the Muslim ummah. The implications of such an approach for national unity, regional dynamics, and the party\u27s long-term political trajectory are also discussed
