Arts Community Resilience in Malaysia during the Time of COVID-19: Five Arts Centre’s Open House Initiative

    Get PDF
The intrusion of COVID-19 in Malaysia had resulted in the disruption of many art projects for the whole year of 2020. Due to the country’s countermeasures to combat the disease’s ongoing spread, several art groups and art projects were facing mass postponements, cancellations, and uncertainty—arts communities were vulnerable to economic losses, social and environmental limitations during the volatile period. However, there were few art groups that managed to adapt their practices and work around the pandemic constraints they’ve encountered. Five Arts Centre arts collective was sampled and interviewed for this year-long study which looks at the preliminary impacts and responses of COVID-19 on the arts communities in Kuala Lumpur. The results indicate Malaysian arts communities were able to remain resilient against the pandemic mostly due to their social connectedness across the arts practitioners and institutions within the arts ecosystem. Added with their intuitive instrumentalisation of existing resources to meet the environmental limitations that the COVID-19 presented. The research findings are analysed through the utilisation of an adapted resilience framework to help explain the sampled art groups’ experiences through the pandemic period

Visualization Method for Mesoscale Eddies Characteristics in Ocean Flow Fields Based on Variable Particle Systems

    Get PDF
Visualization of ocean flow fields is a major area of interest in marine science. Existing visualization methods based on randomly generated particles tend to exhibit a uniform distribution. While this approach effectively represents ocean flow fields, it inadequately conveys the characteristic structures within the flow in an intuitive manner. Ocean eddies, as crucial components of ocean dynamics (Patrizio & Thompson, 2021), are key features in visualizing ocean flow fields. Mesoscale eddies, which contain 90% of the ocean\u27s kinetic energy, play a vital role in transporting this energy. These eddies significantly influence local marine environments and are instrumental in understanding the kinetic energy of ocean flow fields, providing valuable insights for fields such as oceanography, meteorology, and climate research. The aim of this study is to establish a method based on variable particle systems. Initially, a feature set for mesoscale eddies and a parameter set for variable particles are defined. By mapping the feature set to the parameter set, we express the characteristic structure of mesoscale eddies dynamically. Using ocean flow field data, we demonstrate the method\u27s ability to effectively highlight the characteristic structures of mesoscale eddies within the flow field through qualitative and quantitative evaluation metrics. By analyzing and visualizing ocean flow fields, we can gain a deeper understanding of their spatiotemporal evolution, thereby uncovering the patterns and regularities of their movement. This research approach not only facilitates the effective development, utilization, and sustainable management of marine resources but also aligns with the demands of digital ocean technology for visualizing marine spatial information

How Do the Political Connections and the Corporate Governance Mechanisms Affect the Firm Risk of Chinese Dual-listed Companies?

    Get PDF
This research aims to assess the influences of political connections and corporate governance (CG) mechanisms on the firm risk of Chinese dual-listed companies (CDLC). CDLCs are Chinese companies that have core businesses in China and simultaneously list their shares in the Hong Kong and the China A-share markets. One hundred CDLCs are chosen for this research from 2003 to 2019. A binary variable of state control firm attribute (SCFA) is created to proxy the political connections to the Chinese government. The standard deviation of daily stock return and the mean of the natural logarithm of squared daily stock return are the two proxies of firm risk. The regression results show that the SCFA negatively influences the firm risk. Thus, the political connections, proxied by the SCFA, mitigate the firm risk. However, the state ownership’s influence on firm risk is insignificant. The regression results are supportive of our argument that SCFA and state ownership are two distinct concepts. Both the board size and independent director ratio insignificantly influence the firm risk. The CEO duality cannot be concluded to positively influences the firm risk and is not a destabilising factor in CDLCs. Evidence of the legal bonding effect is not observed in this research

Intellectual Resources and Operational Cost-effectiveness in Banks: An Empirical Analysis from Vietnam

    Get PDF
The central role of intellectual resources in business operations of banks has been recognised and unveiled in the extant literature in recent times. However, it seems to be a virtual absence of studies on the impacts of these resources on the efficiency of operational costs in the banking industry, especially in developing markets. Hence, this research aims to fulfill this research gap by employing VAIC model and investigating its role in operating cost management of 26 local banks in Vietnam during the 2006–2020 period. After performing various econometrics methods and robustness tests, the continuing evidence demonstrates that the effectiveness of operating expenditures may be enhanced significantly by relying specially on intellectual capital. Additionally, human and structural capitals are two ingredients of VAIC that can assist banks in managing operating costs more effectively. By contrast, an increase in capital employed – the third ingredient – may accelerate costs related to operational business. Taken together, it is expected that the empirical findings can provide the helpful guidance for managers and decision-makers in banks to optimise the cost-effectiveness in daily business operations and pay new paths for academicians to dig more into the role of knowledge-based management in coming future.

Sustainability of Oral History: A Case of SRK Pulo at Kampung Semarang

    Get PDF
History is data regarding historical instances of human activity. This study anticipates the cultural memory around the primary school, SRK Pulo, which was relocated while retaining its previous name. One of the ancient Malay settlements along the Sarawak riverbank in Kuching is called Kampung Pulo. Questions are being asked about the SRK Pulo, its origin and other related histories to acknowledge. Further study, especially oral history inquiries, might help clear up any lingering questions regarding a historical truth or knowledge gap. For the benefit of future research, the cultural memory of intangible cultures needs to be preserved and documented through oral history research. To highlight historical local stories as the major focus in a qualitative manner, this study utilised Husserlism in Transcendental Phenomenology (TPh). The positive takeaways from oral history investigations into the genesis of SRK Pulo could serve as a guideline for the younger generation to respect and learn from the past to establish evocative living in the future. The sustainability of indigenous peoples in preserving their sociocultural ways of life and oral traditions depends on this study

Species Identification of Rehabilitated Critically Endangered Orangutans Through DNA Forensic: Implication for Conservation

    Get PDF
Rehabilitating and releasing orangutans back into the wild is one of the conservation strategies being pursued to conserve orangutans. However, the species determination between Sumatran, Tapanuli, and Bornean orangutans is essential for reintroduction to avoid outbreeding depression, which could lead to DNA hybridisation and increase the probability of recessive characters. Here, we reported on an investigation of three orangutans in which DNA forensic techniques were used to identify the species before release and reintroduction to their habitat. By applying DNA forensic, the orangutan was successfully confirmed with high probabilities (100%) by identifying two orangutan species, Pongo abelii and Pongo pygmaeus wurmbii. Based on ambiguous morphology, we found the possibility of orangutan species being misidentified in rehabilitation. This case report demonstrates the importance of molecular diagnostics to identify the orangutan species. We also provide workflow recommendations from genetic aspect for rehabilitated orangutans. These recommendations will enable decision-makers to consider genetics when assessing future management decisions, which will help ensure that the orangutan species is effectively conserved

    Get PDF
This study uses the qualitative research method to analyze Dong Zhongshu’s perspective of life based on the way of Heaven, providing reference value for modern nourishment. The theoretical foundation of this study is his philosophy of Heaven. The methodology for this study is essentially a textual research approach. Dong Zhongshu’s primary work, Chunqiu Fanlu, provides insight into his Yin-Yang philosophy. He established unequivocally that Heaven and human are in the same category, with human life being the most valuable. Human should follow the way of Heaven to preserve their health. The principle of Yin-Yang embodies the way of Zhong He. It is a full way of maintaining one’s health. Dong Zhongshu’s philosophy of health preservation is more than just keeping the body healthy; it is also about having a positive attitude toward life and living in accordance with the theory of Heaven and human. A complete appreciation of life’s significance can only be attained by developing a noble and ideal personality and addressing life with benevolence and responsibility. The ultimate goal is to create peace between Heaven and human, body and mind, and societal harmony. It injects a new force into the Confucian thought of health preservation. It also serves as a reference and inspiration for modern health and wellness
