Successful learning stems from effective teaching. This collection of papers offers some alternative to current classroom teaching techniques. Most of the ideas put forward in the papers have been adapted to suit both learners of English as a Second Language and English as a Foreign Language.
It is hoped that English Language practitioners will find the papers interesting and relevant to their classroom needs. It is the aim of Papers on ELT for Asian Countries to provide a source of materials from which teachers can draw upon to stimulate interest and participation in the English Language classroo
Manual for Project Research - for College and University Students
Manual for Project Research - for College and University Students is intended as both a classroom text and a reference tool. It is a guide to the methods and materials of research. This Manual is compiled specifically for those who are undertaking research for the first time.
The contents of this Manual are presented in a very compact form. The reader is refered to the standard textbook for greater detail and for expended explanations. Attempts were made to offer materials in the Manual that would be applicable to any field. There are, of course, special research tools which have to be utilized in specific fields of specialization. The author felt that it would not be appropriate to include them here.
The reference sources listed in the Bibliography at the end of this Manual are recommended for further reading
Pathways to become a qualified accountant 2
Malaysian government targeted to have 60,000 qualified chartered accountants by year 2020. Dr Lim Swee Geok, also known as Dr. Amy Lim, the Chief Executive Officer of Ler Lum Advisory Services Sdn. Bhd. on the other hand, had a burning desire to provide comprehensive information on the various pathways leading to a chartered accountant qualification to students upon enrollment in tertiary education. Besides, there being no single book available as a point reference on the certification and the awarding professional bodies, with Dr. Amy’s desire crossing path with government’s direction, saw her in initiating an eBook, ‘Pathways to Become a Qualified Accountant.’ Dr Amy holds a strong belief that every student, those pursuing an accounting degree, and those who are merely keen, deserves to bear sufficient knowledge on the available pathways to become a qualified accountant and by doing just that, they will be able to visualize clearly the paths that they intend to take, all whilst taking that step needed to reach, if not exceed, the government’s mission
Responsiveness of Monetary Policy to Economic Uncertainty: Evidence from the ASEAN-5 Plus 3 Countries
A notable feature of empirical research on the monetary policy rule is that not many studies
rely on the responsiveness of the monetary policy to the goals of the central bank. Policy
responsiveness aligns with the appropriate relative weights placed on the goals following their
priority. To overcome this shortcoming, this study uses open economy Taylor rule in economic
uncertainty and examines its empirical validity based on a sample of ASEAN five plus three
countries, including Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, South Korea,
Japan, and China. By employing the autoregressive distributed lag (ARDL) model, this study
examines the long-run and the short-run relationships between economic uncertainty (i.e.
output uncertainty, inflation rate uncertainty, and exchange rate uncertainty) and monetary
policy. Additionally, this study examines the responsiveness of monetary policy in economic
uncertainty for goal-based performance measures. The findings provide some policy
implications; (i) both in the long run and/or short run, the central bank should consider the
policy variables (namely, output, inflation rate, and the exchange rate) underlying the premise
of unforeseen future economic events in its monetary policy decision makings for the best
economic outcomes, and (ii) the responsiveness of monetary policy to the central bank’s goals
can serve as a benchmark (namely, the size of the weights in policy rule) in aligning smooth
movements of the policy rate
Using Concept Mapping as a Quality Learning Strategy for Engineering and ICT Undergraduates: An Exploratory Study
The evolution of holistic education arouses some pertinent questions of the validity and quality of learning, especially in the delivery of education in technical fields such as engineering and information and communications technology (ICT) which involves spatial and interconnecting ideas. A confronting fact is institutions of higher learning (IHLs) today are facing an uphill task in multiple attempts to wholesomely educate the generation Y. Born between the years of 1980 to 2000, their lives have been largely shaped by visual cues of globalization, multiculturalism, terrorism, and heroism rather than textual-based teaching-learning styles of yesterday years. This paper aims to review some of the previous research findings pertinent to these areas of interest. It also intends to present an exploratory research work that is being conducted based on phenomenology approach of the German philosopher Edmund Husserl (1859 – 1938) to study the use of concept mapping as a strategies instructional and assessment tool for learners in the fields of engineering and ICT
Encouraging Visits to Geoparks through Sustainable Marketing: A Conceptual Study on Geopark Dieng
Geopark tourism plays a crucial role in sustainable tourism by promoting visitor attractions while emphasizing the conservation of geological heritage, public education, and the empowerment of local communities. However, scholarly focus on the factors influencing visit intentions in geopark contexts, particularly from a sustainable marketing perspective, is limited. This conceptual paper presents a theoretical framework illustrating how publicity, destination attributes, and word of mouth (WOM) contribute to the formation of destination awareness, destination image, and destination preference, ultimately shaping visit intentions. Drawing from tourism marketing literature and consumer behavior theories, the study proposes twelve research propositions. Destination awareness and destination image serve as key psychological mechanisms that mediate the effects of external factors on destination preference and visit intention. Publicity enhances awareness and strengthens image through credible exposure, while destination attributes, such as accessibility, attractiveness, and amenities, impact both preference and image. Additionally, WOM lends authenticity and trust, further reinforcing awareness and perception. The model highlights destination preference as the vital link between perceptions and tourists’ intentions to visit. Theoretically, this paper enriches the sustainable tourism literature by extending destination marketing concepts to geopark tourism. Practically, it provides insights for geopark managers to develop sustainable marketing strategies through credible publicity, effective management of sustainable attributes, and WOM-based experiential promotion. Although conceptual, this framework paves the way for empirical research, including tests across various forms of special interest tourism and the incorporation of cultural distance or behavioral theories to connect revisit intentions with actual behavior
Classification of Mental Health Level of Students Using SMOTE and Soft Voting Ensemble Classifier and the DASS-21 Profile
This study proposes a comprehensive approach to address the rise in mental health problems among college students. It leverages the Synthetic Minority Over-sampling Technique (SMOTE) to address the class imbalance in the dataset and employs a Voting Ensemble with soft voting to combine several base algorithms (Logistic Regression, Random Forest, Gradient Boosting, and XGBoost/SVM) for accurate prediction of mental health levels (normal, mild, moderate, severe, very severe). Feature importance-based feature selection using Random Forest is utilized to eliminate less relevant attributes. The model evaluation includes accuracy, precision, recall, F1-score, and confusion matrix analysis. The results demonstrate that the ensemble approach improves stability and accuracy compared to individual models. Notably, the application of SMOTE led to significant performance improvements, with classification accuracies reaching up to 100% for the Random Forest model. These findings support the use of ensemble learning and SMOTE for developing effective college student mental health screening systems, ultimately enabling timely intervention and suppor
Effects of Innovation Advancement on Technological Progress and Economic Growth in Uganda: A Generalized Least Squares Method
The paper examines the long run effects of innovation advancement on technological progress and
economic growth in Uganda during the 1970 to 2020 period. The paper is unique because it
measures annual innovation as a ratio of level of technology to the total productivity of labor and
capital. Meanwhile, it measures annual level of technology as a ratio of output to total factor. Thus,
the paper demonstrates that innovation is characterized by a creative destruction problem. In the
study, data sets were collected from the United Nations Database and data analyses were conducted
by using the generalized least squares (GLS) method and the philosophical principle of causality.
The study finds that innovation advancement as well as innovation acceleration had positive and
significant effects on technological progress and economic growth in Uganda during the given
period. Hence, findings in the paper support the innovation-based growth hypothesis that there is
a positive linkage between innovation and economic growth. The paper also finds that during the
given period innovation gave rise to technological advancement in Uganda. This research work
attempts to aid policy makers, educators and financers in Uganda to stimulate innovation
advancement, technological progress and economic growth in the country
