Competitive Advantage of Malaysian Small Medium Enterprises: Impact of Supply Chain management Practices, environmental Uncertainty and Supply Chain Flexibility

    Get PDF
Today’s businesses are compelled to develop flexible capabilities to enable it to effectively respond to greater volatility and complexity of the fast changing environments. The current study proposes that a firm that adopts supply chain management practices would achieve competitive advantage and this is because of the influence of flexibility in the supply chain which in turn is driven by environmental uncertainties. The research framework consists of four constructs namely environmental uncertainty, supply chain management practice, supply chain flexibility and competitive advantage. The relationship between these constructs shall be investigated within the same framework in the context of SMEs in Malaysia, thus, filling the gap in supply chain literature in Malaysia by providing a new framework for research. The data collection method used is a self-administered survey questionnaire and the instruments of measures had been adopted from previous researches. Data collected from the pilot study was used to conduct exploratory factor analysis to assess the dimensionality of items in view of the new research environment and business condition. Subsequently, a field study using an online self-administered survey questionnaire yielded 250 usable responses from the SME industry. Structural equation modelling was used to analyze the data results as it produces better results in terms of fitness and more accurate and efficient in estimating multiple items of the latent constructs. iii The results support the hypothesized relationships presented in the theoretical framework, that is, the independent path which examine the effect of the exogenous constructs and endogenous constructs as well as the mediating path which examine the role of supply chain flexibility as the mediator in the relationship of supply chain management practices and competitive advantage. Some of the gaps in literature that this study was able to fill include expanding on existing models by integrating the four constructs in one theoretical framework and tested the theory in the SME sector. Testing mediation using the triangle approach in this study is novel because it has not been seen to be used for empirical supply chain management studies locally before. One of the most important contribution of this study is employing the resampling method of bootstrapping to test the mediation effect of supply chain flexibility, thus managed to achieve full mediation which had not been demonstrated in previous studies before

This study was aimed at investigating how electronic learning prototype could be employed as an alternative training support of educators in Malaysian higher education for improving their pedagogical knowledge and skills. It explores the benefits of e-learning platform to facilitate higher learning educators and to mitigate growing challenges faced by educators in enhancing their pedagogical skills. The theoretical framework model of this study was guided by constructivism and connectivism learning theories along with activity theory and other theories such as adult learning theory, experiential and transformation theory. The activity theory guided the design-based research (DBR) by Reeves (2000, 2006) which is adapted in this study as its research methodology. This design-based research is carried out in eight phases: analysis, design, validation, development, implementation, evaluation, impact and continuous learning. The analysis and design phases obtain the perspectives of 8 experts comprises educators, manager, learning designers cum trainers and system administrator. In analyse phase the needs and challenges faced by educators in professional development for pedagogical skills enhancement were analysed and also identified the benefits and acceptance of an electronic prototype as an alternative solution for professional development. In design phase experts were to giving their inputs on learning strategies, elements, tools and system specifications for designing an electronic prototype. In validation and development phase, experts used ACTA techniques to validate the prototype. During the implementation and evaluation, 43 educators from higher education participated in the training course offered by the prototype. Two surveys were conducted immediately after the completion of the course. The result indicated that all educators agreed that they are ready and motivated to use technology in teaching and learning. Further, educators’ ii age, gender and teaching experience have no influence over their performance expectancy, effort expectancy and self-efficacy. However, the performance effort expectancy and self-efficacy have significant towards educators’ behavioural intention of using the prototype as self-directed and lifelong learning platform. The study also reported that the Secondary Influence, Environment and Ability variables have influence over the Motivation variables. Hence, electronic training can be scalable and sustainable alternative learning system for continuous professional development

The study was conducted to investigate the factors that influenced the use of MonsoonSIM business simulation by the undergraduate students of Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM). The objectives of this study were to evaluate the (i) relationship between perceived usefulness, perceived ease of use, and perceived enjoyment towards attitude to use MonsoonSIM, (ii) relationship between perceived usefulness, perceived enjoyment, and attitude to use towards the behavioral intention to use MonsoonSIM (iii) strongest determinants that influenced the students’ attitude to use MonsoonSIM. Two hundred and sixty UTM undergraduate students answered this e-questionnaire. Descriptive and inferential analyses were used to evaluate the data. The results of this study showed all the relationships were positively correlated, and that perceived enjoyment was the most significant factor influencing the students’ attitude to use MonsoonSIM. In conclusion, there is a higher possibility for the technology to be used by the users if it includes perceived usefulness, perceived ease of use, and perceived enjoyment

Integrating the Readiness and Usability Models for Assessing the Information System Use

    Get PDF
In the systematic view, the use of information system (IS) can be separated into three main parts, i.e., the users as the actor of the use, the use itself as a process, and the system as the used object. However, most of the usability studies focus on the process and object points. The number of scholars who study about the actor of the use is still rare. This is an interesting phenomenon how to develop a comprehensive model which combining the three parts of the abovementioned parts of the systematic perspective. The purpose of this study was to understand the influential relationships between the readiness and usability factors towards the use of IS and to integrate the readiness and usability models in the context for assessing the use of a new IS. The proposed model was developed by adopting the Parasuraman’s readiness model and the Nielsen’s usability model, in terms of an inputprocess- output (IPO) logic. Besides the placement transparency of the ten variable within 25 influential relationships, the study also demonstrates coherently the definitions of the variables, its indicators, and the questions of each item measurements

Accreditation of Prior Experiential Learning (APEL): An Alternative Entry Route to Higher Education in Malaysia

In general, all parents, rich or poor, want their children to go to school and receive the best education they can afford. However, in reality, not all children are blessed with this opportunity for many reasons, mainly financial. Studies have revealed that educational attainment is a critical determinant of economic progress (Ariagada, 1986; Barro, n.d; Barro and Lee, 2001; Cole and Geist, 2018; Psacharopoulos and Ariagada, 1986). According to statistics from Human Resources Malaysia 2016, 20.8% of youths (15–24 years of age) and 29.2% of adults (aged 24 to 65) attained the tertiary level of education, indicating that Malaysia still has a lot of room for improve in its economic development. In order to encourage more eligible candidates to upgrade their education level and, at the same time, promote lifelong learning, the Ministry of Education Malaysia launched the APEL (Access) in 2011, as an alternative entry into tertiary education. This paper aimed to compare the academic performance in the undergraduate degree programme between the entrants admitted through APEL (A) and those who came through the standard academic admission route. Although there is extensive literature on the recognition of prior experiential learning (RPL), few researchers have looked at the relationship between entry route and academic performance, especially in Malaysia. A sample of 30 undergraduate adult learners were selected from a private institute of higher learning in Malaysia; and a comparison of their academic performance with standard route entrants in a selected semester was conducted. The study showed that there was no significant difference in the academic performance between the two groups, with adult learners performing as well as the young learners. These findings could help to build confidence in educators and policy-makers in accepting and giving a second opportunity to adult learners to pursue their educational dream

The Influence of Leadership Roles and Team Building & Participation on Team Shared Mental Models: A Study of project managers in Malaysia.

    Get PDF
More and more project teams are formed to achieve organizational objectives as organizations generally recognize the importance and benefits of project teams. One of the outcomes working in a project team is the proliferation of Team Shared Mental Models (TSMM). It is critical to examine the antecedents of TSMM which is the aim of this study as TSMM by itself can contribute to project team learning and others. However, it is unclear from literature whether both leadership roles and team building & participation can influence TSMM concurrently especially in a project setting study whereby there is resource and time constraint compare to normal work teams which are ongoing and operational in nature. This study has developed a research model underpinned on Cohen and Bailey’s (1997) Team Effectiveness Framework to empirically analyze how leadership roles and team building & participation can predict TSMM. Based on 201 random sample responses from project managers in Malaysia, findings suggest that leadership roles can influence TSMM indirectly via team building & participation. Knowledge contribution of this study is that project managers should invest extra efforts in team building & participation as it is the main contributor to TSMM

The study explores the impact of perceived political, cultural, religious and economic factors on the perceived economic growth of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa in users of formal and informal financial systems. The study applied survey questionnaire technique to record responses from respondents associated with firms from formal and informal financial institutions to gain insight into perceived political, cultural, religious and economic factors. Sample of 500 respondents is taken for the survey, 369 responded, while 309 were found valid. Diversified themes associated with the study were identified and discussed. The results of the study and its implications brought to light the role of formal and informal financial institutions in the context of strategic orientation. Findings of the study are examined in relation to analysis for users of formal financial system which exhibited a change in perceived economic growth to be accounted to perceived political stability, perceived cultural stability, perceived economic environment and perceived religious affiliation in the users of formal financial system. However, the results of informal financial system revealed a significant impact of perceived cultural stability, perceived economic environment, and perceived political stability. Perceived religious affiliation had an insignificant impact on perceived economic growth. The study concludes that once a strong coherence between political, cultural, religious and economic environment is buildup, the economy of KP will starts flourishing. The study recommends that the Government should take steps to channelize the informal setups in to the main stream of the economy by bringing industrial and taxation reforms so that the fruits from the formal financial system can be capitalized
