Somalia’s Tripartite Federalism Oxymoron: Building Democratic Institutions and Political Legitimacy in a Fragile Federation

The study aims to explore the inherent tensions and complexities of pursuing democratic institution building and developing political legitimacy within the context of Somalia’s fragile and seemingly contradictory tripartite federal system. In order to obtain the data needed to meet the study’s objective, twenty-five (25) key informants were interviewed using a qualitative research approach. Key informants’ interview responses show that the enervating political legitimacy both undermines institution building and contributes to the ongoing conflict in Somalia, thus making the prospect of restoring order a challenging undertaking, and the instability of Somalia’s federalism conspicuously prominent! Legitimacy is a fundamental principle of politics that is premised upon the right to rule or govern. However, in Somalia’s context, the right to govern and the political obligation arising therefrom involve the culture-bound informal and formal consent, norms and laws of Islam that continue to influence the vicissitudes of political legitimacy and institution building needed to stabilize Somalia’s federalism. In addition, the stability of Somalia’s federalism requires effective institution building with political legitimacy that enables a strong government structure that promotes accountability and divert the clan-based power struggle to inclusive state. The results from this study endorse the argument that political legitimacy requires fair elections based on indigenous principles and open to all parties of the community, a legitimate and publicly ratified constitution, parties based on ideology, a civic state, honest leadership that wants to build the country, a distinct separation and distribution of power among institutions, and freedom of speech within legal bounds

Incorporating health and wellness principles is essential for a holistic approach to sustainable weight loss management, ensuring balance across various aspects such as physical, social, spiritual, emotional, intellectual, environmental, and occupational dimensions. Despite the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, the global wellness industry surpassed USD$5.6 trillion in demand by 2022, with segments like healthy eating, nutrition, and weight loss showing consistent growth that reflects evolving consumer preferences. In Malaysia, the increasing prevalence of non-communicable diseases highlights the importance of the weight management and well-being market, which grew by 8% in 2023 and is expected to maintain a 7.7% compound annual growth rate (CAGR) until 2028. However, despite consumer growing reliance on meal replacement products for weight management, there remains a dearth of research into their long-term effectiveness and limitations. This qualitative study employs an ex-post facto design and a strategic research approach, in a growing brand-diversity of wellness-healthcare market, to review and analyse the product-effective challenges of three leading weight management brands experiencing market-share decline: Cambridge weight management program, Herbalife weight management program, and Isowhey weight management program. It investigates the program protocols, user feedback, and insights from brand experts, revealing that meal replacement solutions offer short-term benefits only. This underscores the need for comprehensive and cost-effective lifestyle approaches that involve a balanced nutritioadaptable to regular eating patterns, physical activity, and behavioural motivations for maintaining an ideal weight. Furthermore, post-weight loss management is often overlooked but crucial in preventing relapse and ensuring long-term success. Collaborative efforts with health alliances and other wellness sectors such as physical activity, personal care and beauty, spas, and mental well-being are integral for providing holistic post-weight loss care. In summary, health and wellness are fundamental elements of a holistic strategy for long-term weight loss management, bridging the gap between short-term achievements and sustained overall well-being. Comprehensive programs should transcend mere meal replacements, addressing multifaceted wellness dimensions to empower individuals towards holistic health and lasting success

The Multiple Intelligences (MI) Theory by Howard Gardner emphasises that individuals have a unique blend of “capabilities” (“intelligences”), differing significantly from the traditional concept of intelligence measured by conventional intelligence quotient (IQ) tests. This cross sectional, multiinstitutional study aimed to compare the MI of medical students from three Malaysian medical schools, investigate the effects of demographic factors on the MI of students with diverse cultural and socio-economic backgrounds, and examine the effects of MI on academic performance. The MI Inventory was used to assess the MI of medical students. Path analysis was carried out using the SmartPLS software version 2.0. Inter-institutional differences in MI were observed among the students. University A students (53.51 ± 21.99) scored significantly higher than University B students (46.70 ± 20.34) in the naturalist domain (p = 0.05). University A students also scored significantly higher(58.35 ± 21.30) than University B (50.26 ± 19.49; p = 0.014) and University C students (46.90 ± 21.58; p = 0.008) in the musical/rhythmic domain. In the verbal/linguistic domain, University A students (47.94 ± 21.06) scored significantly higher than University Cstudents (39.05 ± 19.23; p = 0.05). Path analysis highlighted a statistically significant effect of family income on the musical intelligence (β = 0.220, t = 2.005, p < 0.05), a domain closely related to verbal/linguistic intelligence. Students from all three medical schools consistently achieved the lowest score in the verbal/linguistic domain and the highest score in the intrapersonal intelligence domain. These findings suggest the need for interventions to enhance language proficiency among medical students. Emphasising MI would make medical education more comprehensive, ultimately enhancing learning in their academic pursuit
