Punctuating Musical Diacritics of Water in Cross-species Context

    No full text
There is an urgency for compelling new narratives of ecological survival that draw on Indigenous and ‘othered’ millennial intelligences and agencies. With a focus on the lifegivingness and sacredness of water, this paper is a call for collective inter-cultural cross-species oral-performative, recuperative conversations for re-learning to care for our damaged finite planet. Spirit-being is ever-present in the St\u27at\u27imc multiverse. Be humble, kind, respectful and at peace the elders tell us. Our original instructions teach us how to live together in harmony and compassion with the rest of creation. In this narrative score, musical signs, symbols spaces and terminologies gesture toward lyrical, rhythmic, somatic, sensate, collaborative performance, including pause-silence-beat. At a bend of the river, with ancestors and those to come, ubiquitous Indigenous tricksters Coyote and Raven speak on the page as dramatis personnae to encourage metamorphosizing from normalizing Euro-diacritics that extinguish and essentialize Indigenous oral expression. Joining the conversation are Sam Jim, a St\u27at\u27imc elder born in 1866, and German astrophysicists Helga and Viktor who are researching water beyond our shared earthly home, Viktor having had St\u27at\u27imc research experience in British Columbia. The text is meant to be read aloud. Keywords: indigeneity, narrativity, cross-species interdependency, sacredness of wate

Friedman Test Technique for Optimizing a Seasonal Box-Jenkins ARIMA Model Building

    No full text
This study employs the Box-Jenkins methodology for time series modelling to analyze Nigerian crude oil production data. To enhance the model-building process, the Friedman rank test for seasonality was utilized. Data were sourced from the Nigerian Petroleum Corporation’s Annual Statistical Bulletin, covering the period from January 1997 to September 2014. The findings indicate that the yearly and monthly mean distributions exhibit non-constant behavior over time, implying that both natural and governmental factors significantly impact crude oil production (COP) dynamics. Consequently, a seasonal ARIMA(0,1,1) (0,1,1)12 model was fitted and deemed appropriate for the data

Theoretical Foundations of Culturally Responsive Teaching and Connections to Saskatchewan Curriculum and Indigenous Education

    No full text
This paper will examine the attributes of culturally responsive teaching (CRT) as well as its theoretical foundations. Gay’s (2018) work describes the eight attributes of CRT as validating, comprehensive and inclusive, multidimensional, empowering, transformative, emancipatory, humanistic, normative, and ethical. After unpacking each attribute, I will present and discuss four dimensions of Gay’s (2018) theoretical foundations of CRT which include culturally diverse curriculum, teacher caring, home and school connection, and academic achievement. Further, I will write about how CRT and the epistemologies of Indigenous education can lead to healthy and transformative spaces for Indigenous students in Saskatchewan public schools. For the purposes of this paper, I define healthy and transformative spaces as spaces where students have their needs met in the four dimensions of spirit, mental, physical, and emotional health. Keywords: Indigenous education; culturally responsive teaching; students; education; healthy and transformative space

Asymptotic Confidence Intervals for MRL and TVaR of the Inverse Weibull Distribution with Type II Censored Data

    No full text
We consider interval estimation for the parameters, the Mean Residual Life (MRL) and the Tail Value at Risk (TVaR) of the inverse Weibull distribution. We constructed the confidence intervals based on the asymptotic normality of the maximum likelihood estimator in addition to intervals based on the asymptotic Chi-Square distribution of the likelihood ratio (LR) statistic under Type II Censoring. The performance of intervals is investigated and compared using the lower, upper, and total error rates, in addition to expected lengths using simulation. We found that LR intervals showed better overall performance and are more accurate than confidence intervals based on the asymptotic normality of maximum likelihood estimator

Centering Social Justice and Well-Being in FSL Teacher Identity Formation to Promote Long-Term Retention

    No full text
The French as a second language (FSL) teacher shortage crisis has been a longstanding issue in Canada. In this paper, we examine the links between teacher agency, autonomy and identity in light of findings about marginalization, deprofessionalization, and/or difficulty in developing a strong sense of identity. Taking these findings into account, we propose an FSL teacher preparation model rooted in social justice and well-being which centers identity development through four pillars for success: language proficiency, intercultural competence, pedagogical knowledge and skill, and collaborative professionalism. We examine the implications of taking such an approach in FSL teacher preparation and argue that applying a social justice lens to identity development sets FSL teachers up for effective professionalization and a sense of well-being that can lead to long-term retention in the field. Keywords: French as a second language, language teacher identity, teacher retention, social justice, well-bein

Realizing and Imagining Schools as Sites of Community Care: Lessons from Children Playing During a Pandemic

    No full text
This paper is the result of an action research project that aimed to understand how families were playing during the COVID-19 pandemic and what action might support them. Schools were revealed as important yet taken-for-granted providers of community care for children through their offerings as spaces where children create friendships, move, engage in the arts, feel a sense of belonging, contribute, and play. This paper takes a strength-based approach to learn from children and families playing during the pandemic to explore such realizations of schools as sites of community care while also inviting and offerings imaginings of schools in partnership in care-offering alongside the community and children. Keywords: COVID-19, play, community care, aesthetics of play, schools, children and public spac

Teacher Educators’ Endeavours to Enhance Students’ Cultural Competence: A Qualitative Study within Danish Teacher Education

    No full text
This paper explores teacher educators’ endeavours to enhance their students’ cultural competence in the context of Danish teacher education. It analyses how these endeavours resonate with the theoretical principles of critical multiculturalism and multicultural education. The study employed dyadic interviews as its primary method for data collection. The findings revealed that the educators felt constrained by the lack of awareness among politicians and policymakers of the significance of multicultural education, which made it difficult for them to develop in-depth knowledge and critical views on culture among students. The educators emphasized a need for a holistic approach that encompasses systemic changes and a shift in mindset toward critical multiculturalism in teacher education. This study calls for more institutional accountability to invest in preparing future teachers to work in multicultural classrooms. Keywords: teacher education, critical multiculturalism, cultural diversity, dyadic interviews, Denmark
