Problems of Professional Disempowerment: An Initial Study of Social Work Conditions in Greenland
No full textThis study explores social workers’ experiences in a social service department in Greenland. The social workers described limiting factors, such as an absence of management and a dysfunctional interdisciplinary network. They described feelings of frustration and individualization, which are known stressors. We found that the social workers were in a disempowered position that hindered their management of key welfare services. Serious problems were found that could have consequences for professional social work with clients. By drawing upon the traditions behind critical social work in our discussion of the findings, we have furthered our understanding of the workers’ conditions. We point to issues at local, interdisciplinary, and societal levels. One solution will be to work collaboratively with social workers by using empowerment strategies to strengthen a critical consciousness within the profession. The development of a critical capacity is essential if social workers are to organize anti-oppressive practices and interdisciplinary co-operation, and to engage proactively in the future development of the Greenlandic welfare system. This can be accomplished by working with educated social workers in a union and by introducing more critical understandings at the student level

How are subjects and fields of study to be effectively integrated? For thirty years Bernard Lonergan worked on this problem in his own field of theology and arrived at a solution he named functional specialization that has broad implications for all subjects and fields. This essay examines the roots of Lonergan’s solution. The second part of the essay also in this volume presents the solution itself and how it might be implemented
Understanding Community Integration in a Housing-First Approach: Toronto At Home/Chez Soi Community-Based Research
No full textThe Mental Health Commission of Canada’s At Home/Chez Soi project has taken a housing-first approach, providing approximately half of the project participants with housing as well as services that are tailored to meet their needs, while the other half have access to the regular supports that are available in their community. At Home/Chez Soi worked specifically with people with experiences of homelessness and mental health. The People With Lived Experience Caucus is linked to the Toronto site of the At Home/Chez Soi project and provides to all aspects of the larger project the perspective and advice of people who have experienced homelessness and used the mental health system. Given the opportunity to develop their own research project, the People With Lived Experience Caucus Research Subcommittee analyzed purposively sampled 18-month follow-up interviews from the At Home/Chez Soi Toronto evaluation in order to explore how the participants discuss and experience community integration in their day-to-day lives. Through our research we found that community integration is a complicated and non-linear process that is positively impacted by working toward the self-determination, independence, and empowerment of the project participants

Get PDFThis paper documents my initial effort to approach a mathematical puzzle with a dual focus: my aim is to discover a rule for extracting square roots, but my primary interest is in the procedure, i.e. in the dynamics of my own wonder. The exercise is taken, with some modification, from chapter three of Wealth of Self and Wealth of Nations by Philip McShane. It was an undergraduate effort, and my hope is that it will be helpful to anyone who wishes to make a similar beginning in serious self-attention. It may be of particular interest to high school, college, and university students who are struggling with the problem of memorization replacing genuine understanding in their education
