Queer, Muslim, and Maghrebi: An Intersectional Analysis of Immigrant Identities in Contemporary France
Get PDFThis study investigates the complex ways in which queer Muslim women with origins from the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) negotiate belonging and selfhood in France. Drawing on a three-month long digital ethnography, I employ an intersectional approach to explore the juxtaposition of “Muslim” and “lesbian/ bisexual” identities and to answer the question, “How do queer Muslim immigrant women negotiate and conceptualize their identities in contemporary France?” As a marginalized group within a marginalized minority of immigrants from the MENA region, queer Muslim immigrant women have been overlooked in scholarship, public discourses, politics, LGBTQ+ spaces, and religious spaces. This research addresses this gap by exploring the identity-related struggles of queer Muslim immigrant women in France and contributes to studies on Muslim subjectivities, immigration, and gender. Based on my findings, I argue that queer Muslim immigrant women in France negotiate their identities through reconfiguring “secular” and “Muslim” identities and queering religious texts. This negotiation takes place, in part, by using social media to connect with others who share a similar conceptualization of their identities within digital spaces
The Key to Translation: An Examination of Children‘s Human Rights Under Government Care and Protection in Manchester and Santa Cruz, Jamaica
Get PDFAccording to the Care and Protection Act of Jamaica (2004), protection and provisional rights have historically taken precedence over the participation rights of children – that is, the right to freely express views and maintain a voice in decisions that affect them. To fulfill the participation rights of children, as outlined by the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC), government organizations are encouraged to develop practices that optimize the individual freedom, autonomy, and views of children. I conducted an ethnographic study of the practices used to address the human rights and social needs of abused and neglected children placed under government care and protection in Manchester, Jamaica. My ethnographic research reveals how government staff and caretakers prioritized children‘s participation rights, giving them input into their standard of care. As such, it illustrates the process of “vernacularization,” which refers to the translation of global human rights ideas to socially relevant norms in communities
The Impact of Exercise Training Interventions on Flow-Mediated Dilation: An Umbrella Review Protocol
Get PDFIntroduction. (Cardio)vascular diseases are among the top causes of death in Western societies. The impact of exercise training interventions to improve endothelial-dependent, flow-mediated dilation (FMD) responses has been reviewed extensively. These reviews may differ in their inclusion criteria, exercise type, exercise mode, exercise intensity, specific research questions, and conclusions. Comparing and contrasting these reviews will assist with the determination of optimal exercise programs across healthy and clinical populations. Objectives. We will conduct an umbrella review (or review of reviews) on systematic reviews and meta-analyses that examined the impact of exercise training interventions on peripheral artery FMD. The impact of exercise training design, population or artery studied, FMD methodology, and quality of reviews will be explored. Methods. A database search will be conducted in Scopus, Embase, MEDLINE, CINAHL, and Academic Search Premier for systematic reviews and meta-analyses on exercise training and FMD. All reviews must be conducted in adults (’‰¥18 years). No limitation will be placed on the population (disease status, sex, etc.) or type of exercise training. Study quality will be determined using the JBI critical appraisal checklist for systematic reviews. Two independent screeners will examine titles, abstracts, and full texts of relevant sources and conduct the quality assessments. The results will be presented narratively and in a tabular format to align with the review objectives. Conclusion. This umbrella review may provide insight into the optimal training program to improve arterial health and act as an agent of change for modifying existing community exercise programs or clinical rehabilitation programs
The Impact of Exercise on Cardiotoxicity in Pediatric Cancer Survivors: A Scoping Review Protocol
Get PDFIntroduction: Childhood and adolescent cancer survivors treated with anthracyclines and chest-directed radiation therapy have a much higher risk of developing cardiovascular complications into adulthood. Exercise is one intervention that may mitigate some of these adverse treatment-related effects. Nevertheless, efforts to consolidate this evidence are limited, and a review is required to summarize the impact of current exercise interventions on managing cardiac-related side effects of cancer treatments in pediatric cancer survivors.Objective: This scoping review protocol describes the methods used to explore the current literature characterizing exercise interventions and their reported cardiac-related outcomes for managing cardiotoxicity in childhood and adolescent cancer survivors.Methods: Joanna Briggs Institute guidelines for conducting and reporting scoping reviews will be followed. Studies considered for this review must include an exercise intervention with cardiac surveillance conducted at two or more time points. Intervention participants must have received a cancer diagnosis ’‰¤19 years of age and received anthracyclines or chest-directed radiation therapy.Conclusion/Discussion: This scoping review protocol provides extensive details regarding the methods used, will enhance the transparency of reporting, and will improve the quality of the final scoping review manuscript. Outputs from the completed scoping review manuscript will summarize the breadth of literature reporting on exercise interventions used to manage treatment-related cardiotoxicity in childhood and adolescent cancer survivors
Developing an FASD Health Promotion Social Media Campaign Using Community-Based Participatory Peer Review: Notes From Atlantic Canada
Get PDFIntroduction: Health promotion awareness activities by health agencies, such as those by the Public Health Agency of Canada, aim to increase health literacy, often using social media campaigns to reach large audiences. Objectives: The objective of this research was to explore how community peer-reviewed social media content can facilitate the reach of health promotion campaigns, with specific regard to awareness around fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD), alcohol, and pregnancy in Atlantic Canada. Methods: We developed a health promotion social media campaign consisting of 16 digital posters, then implemented a community-based participatory peer-review process to request input and feedback from individuals with lived experiences, caregivers, professionals who work with individuals with FASD, and various advocates for FASD throughout Atlantic Canada. Reviewer comments were then directly applied to update poster content, which was redistributed for secondary approval before circulation on Facebook and Instagram. Results: Reviewer feedback was constructive, with various suggestions for updates being applied to images and text choices. Once posted, the health promotion campaign was well received and reached over half a million viewers across the two platforms in the first three months. Engagement and interactions were overall positive, with minimal negative responses and only one post flagged by the platform as a social issue advertisement. Discussion/Conclusion: With the inclusion of diverse voices from the FASD community in the co-creation of the content, we argue that the campaign‘s style, messaging, and language more accurately reflected the intended audiences and was made accessible to a wider demographic, thus strengthening awareness and prevention messages. We explore a health promotion social media campaign development process, providing valuable examples of how to encourage and create more safe spaces that promote open conversations about health and gradually dismantle outdated ideas and systems so we can begin addressing stigma by delivering accurate, non-judgmental health information
