The ocean and human health as a meta-discipline: Opportunity for Atlantic Canada
No full textThe one global ocean is receiving unprecedented attention recently, due to numerous factors such as the ocean‘s role in climate change and the burgeoning blue economy. However, even though the ocean allows life on this planet, very little attention has been given to the complex relationship between the ocean and human health (OHH). USA and Europe have for a number of years focused funding on OHH as a meta-discipline (i.e., a discipline that includes the ideas and perspectives of a number of other disciplines), but Canada until now has not. This article examines the advancement of OHH and argues that Atlantic Canada could and should lead a Canadian meta-disciplinary program on the ocean and human health.Keywords: global ocean, human health, meta-disciplin

No full textCet article analyse les mécanismes d‘organisation et de fonctionnement de l‘écriture de la vengeance dans le roman d‘Afrique francophone, à travers La Mort des fétiches de Sénédougou de Bokar N‘Diaye et L‘heure de la vengeance à Quenzé de Patrick Serge Boutsindi. Du vengeur « malgré lui » au vengeur désenchanté, l‘on découvre une écriture qui explore les complexités humaines comme la colère, la rancune, l‘orgueil, l‘honneur, la jalousie, la rage et la haine. En posant l‘hypothèse que ces deux textes jouent sur une ambivalence fondamentale, renforcée par une sémiotique du mépris, l‘article vise à étudier les modalités par lesquelles l‘écriture relie la vengeance à des enjeux sociaux et culturels.This article analyses mechanisms of the organisation and the functioning of the discourse of vengeance in the francophone African novel through an examination of Bokar N‘Diaye‘s La Mort des fétiches de Sénédougou and Patrick Serge Boutsindi‘s L‘heure de la vengeance à Quenzé. From the avenger malgré lui to the disenchanted avenger, we discover a writing that explores the complexity of human emotions, such as anger, rancour, pride, honour, jealousy, rage and hate. In hypothesising that these two texts play with a fundamental ambivalence, reinforced by the semiotics of contempt, this article aims to study the methods through which writing links vengeance to social and cultural issues
Au-delà de la réciprocité négative : la femme-gangster Madame St-Clair, reine de Harlem de Raphaël Confiant
No full textCet article se propose d‘examiner la représentation d‘une femme-gangster, familièrement connue comme « Madame Queen » ou tout simplement « Queenie », une figure redoutable et ingénieuse du New York des années 1920-40. Confiant rappelle l‘enracinement curieusement éthique et trouble de cette Antillaise, militante et « miraculée », qui subvertit les ordres du pouvoir en reproduisant le désordre plus souvent sous forme de réciprocité négative, c‘est-à -dire de vengeance. Son monde sera déterminé par la Première Guerre mondiale, le début du Mouvement des droits civiques, la Grande Dépression de 1929 et la Deuxième Guerre mondiale. L‘agentivité (agency) de Queenie, son « engagement social » dirait-on avec un sourire, va s‘exercer dans la projection d‘une vie pleinement pensée et qui, obscurément ou instinctivement, rejoint l‘un ou l‘autre pôle ou d‘une vengeance calculée ou d‘une revanche indéfinie et radicale. Dans ce champ au départ miné, elle en arrive presque à la conciliation des contraires en ravivant le champ des possibles pour des générations futures. Ainsi, cette femme gangster s‘offre l‘occasion de revoir, à partir de son vécu, les manifestations de la violence et les noeuds de l‘oppression omniprésente. Aux points de vue politique, économique, juridique et culturel, les communautés marginalisées sont en proie à la loi du plus fort. Mais, qui pourrait porter l‘étendard de la liberté, de la paix et de la dignité sans une conscience avivée qui permette de définir ces valeurs humaines ? C‘est une contribution à l‘examen critique du regard que Raphaël Confiant porte sur un monde en effervescence, sur des forces qui ne se sont guère alliées ni vraiment confrontées dans le passé. De la revanche du rire au questionnement d‘une alliance entre la réciprocité positive et négative, la recherche d‘une voie libératrice par l‘imaginaire chez Confiant est inébranlable et à la fois inépuisable, car l‘avenir et la cartographie des possibles pour « les damnés de la terre » en découlent.This article seeks to examine representations of the female gangster commonly known as “Madame Queen,” or simply “Queenie,” who was a formidable and ingenious figure in 1920s-40s New York. Confiant calls to mind the curiously ethical and troubled roots of this Antillaise activist and “miraculous survivor” who subverts the order of power by, more often than not, producing disorder in the form of negative reciprocity, that is to say vengeance. Her story will be determined by the First World War, the start of the Civil Rights Movement, the Great Depression and the Second World War. Queenie‘s agency, or shall we say, with a knowing smile, her “social engagement,” will manifest itself in the projection of a life that is fully-thought out and which, mysteriously or instinctively, unites itself to one pole or another of calculated vengeance or indefinite and radical revenge. Out of what begins as a minefield, she very nearly reconciles these opposites by opening up a field of possibilities for future generations. Thus, this woman gangster gives herself the chance to consider anew the manifestations of violence and the knots of oppression that have been omnipresent in her life. From a political, economic, judicial and cultural perspective, marginalised communities live according to the survival of the fittest. Yet who can carry the standard of liberty, of peace and of dignity without a heightened awareness that allows us to define those human values? Raphael Confiant brings a critical examination of the gaze to a world of effervescence, to forces which have barely been linked let alone brought head to head in the past. From the revenge of laughter to the questioning of the link between positive and negative reciprocity, Confiant‘s search for a path to liberation by means of creation is unwavering and also inexhaustible, for from it flows the future and the map of possibilities for “the damned of the earth.
