Bringing Evidence Back from the Dead: A History of Interference in Science in Canada

    No full text
Since the earliest accounts of the ‘muzzling‘ of Canadian federal government scientists in 2012 and the declaration of a ‘war on science‘ in 2013, the detrimental impacts of Stephen Harper‘s leadership as Canadian Prime Minister has been investigated and reported in the media and gray literature in Canada and abroad. Significant evidence spoke to the consequences of this government-led ‘war on science‘ for the environment, for public sector scientists, and for the Canadian public‘s trust in government decision-making. The current Prime Minister and leader of the Liberal Party of Canada, Justin Trudeau has been twice elected by Canadians, in part, based on a promise to restore scientific integrity, prevent political interference, and implement environmental protections informed by the best available scientific research and evidence. Since 2015, the Prime Minister has taken steps toward the betterment of conditions for environmental scientists in the public sector and for the environment. However, the effectiveness of these have been called into question. The following research paper succinctly documents the historical ‘war on science‘ and its consequences as well as the steps taken by the current government to resurrect use of scientific research and evidence to inform law, policy, and decision-making. Recent evidence that reports on the perspectives of environmental researchers following the implementation of federal policy, were also uncertain of what effect these policies will have on Canadians and the environment in the long-term. It is vital that Canadians continue to hold their government and leaders accountable for their actions and demand that scientific integrity be upheld

    No full text
This article raises the problem of the abject in Michel Houellebecq‘s prose, as regards Polish and French scholarly reactions. We will endeavour to answer two main questions: why is Houellebecq‘s prose considered as repulsive? Can the category of abject be useful for a writer, and if so, how? We distinguish and analyze four levels at which one can experience disgust while reading Houellebecq‘s prose: the linguistic layer of the novels, the characters‘ behaviour, the world created by the writer, and, finally, Houellebecq‘s way of being in the public sphere. Our perspective is sociological and anthropological. We primarily look at the cultural framework in which Houellebecq‘s works, the literary criticism, the writer‘s voice and also the reader all function together.L‘article soulève le problème de l‘abject dans la prose de Michel Houellebecq, en s‘appuyant sur les réceptions critiques polonaises et françaises.

    No full text
In this study, I explore the descriptions of enclosed spaces in Anna Moï\u27s novel Riz noir, the main plot of which takes place a few months after the outbreak of the Tet Offensives in Vietnam. In this novel, the imagination of the 15-year-old autodiegetic narrator constantly wanders between two spaces opposed in their function: her bourgeois house protected from the violent killings occurring outside the walls, and the enclosed space of a prison cell termed “the tiger cage,” in which she spends seventeen months. It is in this space of incarceration that the story takes shape through multiple flashbacks. The constant back and forth between two spaces, one welcoming and the other hostile, which the young prisoner explores so obsessively, merge into a single place at the time of the unexpected ending of the story. The confusion following the merging of the two separate spaces occurs in particular when the reader discovers the allusion to what happened in the life of the young girl at her home until her imprisonment. In this study, I will employ thematic analysis to highlight how and why this prison space becomes a place of introspection, one which will paradoxically save the protagonist from her isolation relative to the outside world by becoming a way of escaping from her inner abyss.L‘espace carcéral comme lieu d‘évasion dans Riz noir d‘Anna MoïDans cette étude, j‘explore les descriptions des espaces clos dans le roman Riz noir d‘Anna Moï, dont la trame principale se déroule pendant quelques mois après le déclenchement de l‘Offensives du Têt au Vietnam.

A certain number of serious errors in our reading of the Testament of Francois Villon have led critics, over two centuries, to transform this remarkable poem into an autobiographical document, and hence to constitute a largely fictional biography of the author. Villon studies have thus been shifted away from the poetry, following a tendency in modern criticism due partly to the pervasive influence of Sainte-Beuve who, as Proust remarked, reads all poetry as if it were anecdotal prose. Even with the errors revealed since 1967, editors of Villon have persisted in clinging to this tendency, with dire results for the reading of all our poetry.
