Although the eras, places and protagonists underlying the diegesis of these two bestsellers (written in English but whose French translation was just as resounding) are different, Lewis and Stoker, a hundred years apart, achieve a representation of abjection that feeds on the same aesthetic of horror (theorized by Ann Radcliffe) which served as a pillar for the development of a whole section of the “fantastique-merveilleux”, a todorovian category rooted in the unexplained supernatural, in a context where the devil seems to explicitly or implicitly pull several strings. From this perspective, with the help of a few case studies centered mainly on two manifestations of the abject — the corpse and the satanic presence, we propose to question the film adaptation of these two novels to answer the following question: does abjection — both in its psychological and phenomenological dimension as developed by Julia Kristeva, and in the cultural or anthropological aspect, as developed by Georges Bataille, although solicited in both novels, export as effectively among moviegoers who, on the one hand, are overexposed to an escalation of macabre images in Coppola‘s Dracula, while, on the other hand, they must imagine them in Moll\u27s Monk?

    No full text
In Poulin\u27s work, the individual remains the creator of his own space of life, oscillating between utopian spaces – « countries without a place and histories without a chronology » –, heterotopian spaces – « utopias that have a precise and real place » (Foucault 23) – and not utopian. Utopian and heterotopic spaces, otherwise referred to as « counter-spaces » are perceived here as spaces of resistance: « places that oppose all others, that are intended in some way to erase, neutralize or purify them » (Foucault 24). In the end, the relationship to reality is different for everyone, but, according to Poulin, balance is essential. This paper seeks to show how the characters of the Driver in La tournée d’automne and Jack in Les yeux bleus de Mistassini find their own equilibrium thanks to « counter-spaces », thereby escaping the drama of the ageing body.

    Get PDF
In June 2014, General (retired) Romeo Dallaire opened a speech on the subject of child solders to the Royal Canadian Chaplain Service with these words: “Religion is insufficient to attenuate the evil.1 This paper responds to General Dallaire‘s statement by examining how The Vancouver Principles on Peacekeeping and the Prevention of the Recruitment and Use of Child Soldiers (hereafter The Vancouver Principles) meet the need for new language to address the encounter with children on operations. It argues that a particular set of agreed upon terms to support soldiers throughout the deployment cycle is needed, not only for ending the recruitment and use of children and youth as participants in war, but also to provide the basis for a moral grammar to help peacekeepers and other actors in theatres of operations remain empowered and healthy on mission and afterwards.

Using Social Media to Better Understand Parents‘ Experiences Managing Teething Pain

    Get PDF
Teething in infants is a natural process that is associated with a variety of signs and symptoms. Many teething pain management strategies exist, yet there is a lack of research investigating which strategies are used by parents and whether they are evidence based. Using an established social media initiative, this study sought to better understand parents‘ experiences managing teething pain and to determine which strategies are evidence based. Methods: Parents‘ experiences with managing teething pain were gathered through a Facebook post in partnership with researchers and a Canadian digital publisher, YummyMummyClub.ca. This Facebook post, part of a larger social media initiative called #ItDoesntHaveToHurt, asked the following question: “What do you do when you think your baby has teething pain?” Comments underwent descriptive thematic analysis to identify common management approaches. An evidence review of literature was undertaken to determine if the most frequently used pain management strategies reported by parents are supported by research. Results: The post received 163 comments. Analysis identified that the most frequently mentioned strategies were frozen/chilled objects, over-the-counter oral analgesics, frozen fruits/vegetables, oral anesthetic gels, and teething necklaces. The evidence review findings suggest a lack of research in the area of teething pain management. Professional dental associations recommend rubbing the gums with a clean finger or using chilled teething toys and over-the-counter analgesics as effective management strategies. Evidence indicates that oral anesthetic gels and teething necklaces are unsafe. Conclusion: Parents use a variety of teething pain management strategies for their infants, many of which are unsafe and not supported by evidence. What information is used by parents and how they select teething pain management strategies is an area that requires further research

Exercise Training Recommendations for Adults With and Without Chronic Disease to Improve Endothelial Health

    Get PDF
The endothelium is the innermost layer of the blood vessels and is responsible for the production of chemicals that are used to regulate arterial diameter in response to changes in blood flow. Dysfunction of the endothelium is a key precursor for cardiovascular disease. However, exercise training may mitigate this dysfunction and promote endothelial health. Therefore, this infographic illustrates findings from an umbrella review (review of reviews; 10.1007/s40279-023-01837-w) that investigated the impact of any exercise training intervention (intervention) on adults with or without chronic disease (population), with, or without a comparator group (comparison), on endothelial function (outcome) using evidence from 27 reviews, including 19 meta-analyses (5464 unique participants). Overall, the included reviews provided evidence that the type of training to optimally improve endothelial function may vary based on disease condition. Specifically, the evidence suggests that healthy adults benefitted most from high intensity aerobic training and/or more frequent low-moderate resistance training. In addition, adults with type 2 diabetes benefitted most from low-intensity resistance or low-moderate aerobic exercise training, whereas those with cardiovascular conditions (i.e., heart transplant patients, peripheral artery disease, heart failure, hypertension, and cerebrovascular disease) should consider engaging in higher-intensity aerobic training to improve endothelial function, although may still need to consult a healthcare provider. Exercise training also improves endothelial function in other chronic conditions including cancer and autoimmune rheumatic disease, but the evidence is insufficient to provide specific guidelines. Although insufficient data exists to determine specific intervention characteristics (i.e., frequency, intensity, type, time), this information provides a high level of evidence to support exercise training, including aerobic, resistance, and combined training as effective strategies to improve endothelial-dependent vasodilatory function in adults. These findings should help guide the design of specific exercise programs or recommendations
