Angels and Henads: How Aquinas’ Angelology Draws Upon Proclus’ Henadology

    No full text
Proclus and Aquinas envision a plurality of divine beings organized hierarchically under the aegis of a first principle: respectively, the One and the henads, and God and His angels. While the differences rule out a wholescale application of Procline henadology to Thomas’ angelology, Aquinas, nevertheless, incorporates Proclus’ henadology into his angelology in two ways. First, Aquinas borrows from Procline henadology when explaining the differences between angels: these can be known in an approximate way from their observable effects. Second, Aquinas incorporates Proclus’ understanding of henadic hierarchy, which focuses on power and activity over ontology, into his conception of angelic hierarchy

Rapid drops of ocean temperatures in several shallow bays in Nova Scotia during a recent cold air outbreak

Abstract From February 3-5, 2023 Atlantic Canada experienced an extremecold Arctic air outbreak with high winds that set many local meteor-ological records, including wind chills as low as -47°C. The impacts of the cold air outbreak on ocean temperatures and ice formation are investigated using predictions from the Coastal Ice-Ocean Prediction System for the East Coast of Canada (CIOPS-E), developed by Environment and Climate Change Canada. Observations from moorings further inform the predictions. The analysis suggests that during the event, several shallow bays and coastal areas in Nova Scotia experienced significant, abrupt temperature decreases ranging from 1.0 to 3.9°C. Overall cooling estimated by the model was 2.3°C for nearshore locations where observations recorded an average temperature decrease of 3.0°C. On the other hand, at individual sites the difference between observed and modelled cooling was up to 2.4°C. This difference can be attributed partly to the fact that the model does not adequately resolve the coastline features of some of the nearshore mooring sites. In comparison, we also analyze another cold air outbreak that occurred on December 15-18, 2016, with wind chills as low as -37°C. The ocean temperatures changes associated with this earlier event saw decreases of 0.8 to 3.5°C, potentially contributing to an ongoing fish kill in St. Mary’s Bay (near the mouth of the Bay of Fundy) at the time.  Keywords: Ocean temperature, Cold air outbreak, Ocean forecasting, Shallow bays, Nova Scoti

Effective management of endangered Blanding’s Turtle (Emydoidea blandingii) populations in Nova Scotia, Canada, requires consideration of threats posed by legacy gold mine contamination

    No full text
The Nova Scotia, Canada, Blanding’s turtle (Emydoidea blandingii) population is designated as endangered both federally and provincially. Currently, its range is confined to five disjunct sub-populations in the province’s southwestern interior. With fewer than 500 breeding adults in the wild, current recovery efforts are focused on reducing mortality risk to adult and juvenile turtles. However, little is being done to address the cumulative impacts of environmental contamination on species fitness and reproductive capacity. This paper focuses on legacy impacts of Nova Scotia’s gold mining industry within present-day Blanding’s turtle critical habitat, with a focus on mercury and arsenic contamination. To date, previous studies have not considered the impacts of legacy gold mining contaminants on Blanding’s turtle recovery and conservation. Three historical gold mining areas were identified as overlapping with Blanding’s turtle ranges (West Caledonia District, Brookfield District, and Pleasant River Barrens District). To address the current knowledge gap, site assessments for Blanding’s turtle presence, food web contamination surveys, turtle claw tissue sampling, and overall site remediation are recommended to complement existing recovery efforts. Philippe Vilain ou le parti-pris de la forme

Philippe Vilain’s critical work manifests an exciting conceptual creativity through its capacity to grasp the recomposition of key aspects of French literature over the past twenty years by means of terminology and neologisms that he takes great care to define and toillustrate. This article proposes a reflection on the main elements of this theoretical language as they were forged in La littérature sans idéal (2016) and La Passion d’Orphée (2020) in order to contribute to a definition of Vilain’s theses on contemporary literary production. As with any language system, the one deployed in Philippe Vilain’s essays is the vehicle for a series of underlying values which are endowed with a structuring role, the most determining of which are language’s sacrality and the parti pris de la forme (taking the part of form).Le travail critique de Philippe Vilain manifeste une enthousiasmante créativité conceptuelle par sa capacité à saisir les recompositions de la littérature française des vingt dernières années au moyen de termes et de néologismes qu’il prend grand soin à définir et illustrer.

Love is a Janus bifrons. On one side, love is a deliberate choice of attitude and behaviour. On the other side, it involves an involuntary part of ourselves: passion and affect. Philippe Vilain’s literary expression unites those two sides of love in the synthetic pattern of a waking dream. This dream is both passively felt and the result of the intense activity of imagination. The choice of a past tense (“imparfait”) corresponds to this dreamy mood in his novels. Thus, Vilain’s literary expression points up two fundamental problems of love. First, love appears to be the result of chance or arbitrary circumstances that make two people come across one other, and, it would appear, two free persons choosing one another. Nevertheless, intense love is felt as a fatality, opposite to chance. Secondly, love is alwaysreal, because it is undeniably felt. But this feeling is often nurtured by illusions.

Exploring the limits of knowing and discovering reverence.

We live in an era of ecological emergency that is the inevitable consequence of our alienation from the Earth, and Sea. We feel that an axiological shift that challenges our existing and collective relationship to the environment can help facilitate a movement towards ecological reverence. In this presentation, Shane, Robyn and Megan theorize, conceptualize and operationalize reverence as an essential element in science education. It is our intention through our presentation to shift the narrative in science education from Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math (STEAM) to CREATIVE, an acronym of science teaching and learning that includes all the elements of STEAM (with Calculation being used as a substitute for math. We feel that Calculation might be more inclusive as it incorporates abstract math concepts while also allowing for the application of these concepts in areas such as risk calculation (Kvalnes & Sandseter, 2023) in education contexts that promote risk taking) but also opens up a space for Reverence, Innovation, and the Environment (Calculation, Reverence, Environment, Art, Technology, Innovation, Values, and Engineering)
