Queering the Dialogue: How Young Adults Are Redefining Sex and Safe Sex
On liberal arts campuses across the United States, about 40% of students are identifying as LGBTQ+ according to a study cited by The College Fix (Peppiatt 2022). While many surveys have collected data on the sexual orientations of students, few have assessed how students are having sex and what safe sex measures they may be using. In a cultural climate that discourages sexual knowledge and offers limited sex education, young adults are defining sex and sexual safety for themselves. This research is framed in the context of symbolic interactionism, discourse theory, and sexual scripts. This research uses eight interviews with liberal arts college students, predominantly queer, to glean personal experiences of sexual learning, sexual safety, and their perceptions and definitions of ‘sex.’ This study suggests that young adults have reacted to heteronormative norms and limited sexual education with their own dialogical understandings of sex and sexual safety which I consider a ‘queering of the dialogue.’ The results demonstrate that current approaches to sexual education set young adults up for unsafe sex and that dialogue is an integral tool for sexual safety and the vastness of queer sex
Halifax Outreach Prevention Education Support (HOPES) Student-Run Clinic: Bridging Community Health and Interprofessional Health Education
This commentary explores the Halifax Outreach Prevention Education Support (HOPES) clinic, an interprofessional student-run clinic in Halifax, Nova Scotia, which unites students from eight different health disciplines. HOPES provides essential health care services to underserved communities while offering students valuable training in interprofessional collaboration, communication, and cultural competence. By fostering teamwork across disciplines, HOPES aligns with interprofessional health education principles, allowing students to develop skills critical to addressing health disparities. Notable initiatives include a vaccine clinic run in partnership with the North End Community Health Centre, which enhances access to immunizations for underserved populations, and health promotion pop-up events focused on community engagement. These projects underscore HOPES’s commitment to reducing health care inequities and promoting health literacy. By integrating diverse health professions, HOPES prepares students to become leaders in inclusive, patient-centred care, ultimately advancing health equity and well-being in the communities they serve

Yuułuʔiłʔatḥ (Ucluelet)
Almost every year of my life since the summer before grade three, I’ve gone on family vacation with my parents and twin sister, driving from Calgary, Alberta, to Vancouver Island. We take the ferry from Tsawwassen to Nanaimo. My favourite places to go while we are there are Ucluelet and the surrounding national park, Pacific Rim. The road to Ucluelet is long, narrow and semi treacherous, as there are lots of twists and turns and only one highway, which can represent the struggles of colonialism, and how this land is part of the unceded territory on Vancouver Island, even though this road was built as a result of colonialism. Taking this class, as a settler, has caused me to be more curious about Ucluelet, and how its history and recent decolonial efforts will shape how communities tackle colonialism, especially in tourism-based towns
