    No full text
European and national housing policies are moving towards the residualisation of social housing sectors for the most vulnerable groups. Social housing landlords, central stakeholders in this field of social housing, are defending in France, Germany and England a generalist sector by targeting different groups, including the elderly. In this work, we study the company strategies, including both housing types and 'services' developed for senior citizens by social landlords in three European territories: the Département du Nord, Greater Manchester and the Ruhr Area. The convergent comparative approach, based on monographs, facilitates the discourses analysis of social landlords and stakeholders of the local housing and ageing policy, on ageing and social housing missions. The public landlords of the three countries share the vision of public policies on ageing, dominated by the risk of dependency for society. They divide elderly tenants into "young independent seniors" and "people with lake of autonomy". The exclusivity of "services" for the elderly is legitimated by the moral duty to support this part of the population. It highlights a phenomenon of institutionalisation or de-institutionalisation of pratices and trends towards commercialisation in the sector. By being part of the home care field, the social landlords are taking a stand as a complement to the care and medical stakeholders and assert their position as generalist mainstream home suppliers.

Poets & Critics, a space for thinking and practicing poetics collectively

    No full text
International audienceThis article seeks to delineate the origin and ambitions of Poets & Critics as a program designed to study and practice the question of alternative forms of criticism by looking into the critical and creative work of a given poet. After a contextual analysis of alternative forms of criticism and their potentiality in mainly US poetry, the article traces the history and the modus operandi of the Poets and Critics program. Initiated in Paris in 2010 and curated by Vincent Broqua, Olivier Brossard and Abigail Lang, the program is viewed as a research method: while bridging the gap between academic and poetic discussions, emphasizing poets' perspectives and exploring alternative forms of criticism, it also examines critical and creative work of English-speaking poets and critics through in-depth, collective discussions, challenging conventional formats and drawing inspiration from poets engaging in scholarly work. What is gained in the end is an intensive study of a given poet's work, the elaboration of a live critical discourse over two days, as well as a renewal of critical discourse in itself

This thesis is part of the e-FRAN project EXAPP_3D and aims at caracterising engineering freshmen’s performance and activity in spatial tasks, at different stages in their engineering course. Spatial reasoning research originates from attempts to define intelligence and includes investigations of the relationship between spatial skills and performance in specific tasks, such as 3-D modelling. As individuals, we are regularly confronted to situations requiring our understanding and sometimes manipulation, whether physical or virtual, of physical objects and representations: finding one’s bearings on a map, fitting suitcases in the boot of a car, assembling furniture from instructions. Yet, spatial reasoning is more prevalent is certain tasks and professions. 3-D modellers for example need to use dedicated software programmes to create objects previously imagined by designers. Computer Assisted Design (CAD) tools first came to prominence in the industrial world in the 1980s, before integrating design courses, as they are aimed at meeting industrial needs. Design learning is now carried out through 3-D modelling software and draws on the understanding of object representations and the combined manipulation of design tools and the virtual objects these generate.ISA-Supméca’s students are exposed to spatial problems as soon as they join the school, namely in 3-D modelling courses. Although these students are enrolled in the same engineering course, the skills and knowledge they have acquired through their previous studies and extra-curricular activities differ. Do the spatial skills they have so far developped relate to their ability to complete the individual and collective 3-D modelling tasks they encounter in their engineering studies? To address this question, our investigations seek to caracterise the students’ performance in spatial tasks and what they do while completing those tasks. These include taking psychometric tests aimed at assessing the product of mental spatial operations and completing 3-D modelling exercises. Our experiments include measures of performance and observations of the students’ activity. This data collection is supplemented with questionnaires addressing the students’ extra-curricular activities and 3-D modelling software experience, in order to explore the possible sources of variance in our subjects’ performance and solving strategies. The caracterisation of the students’ performance and activity is then completed with the exploration of the relationship between those two manifestations. This set of experiments is carried out at the beginning of the school year and at the end of the first term. This repeated-measure design provides the opportunity to explore the malleability of spatial and modelling skills, and the solving strategies involved. The evolutions in performance are then compared with the students’ individual characteristics to test their potential effect.

Clustered photoplethysmogram pulse wave shapes and their associations with clinical data

International audiencePhotopletysmography (PPG) is a non-invasive and well known technology that enables the recording of the digital volume pulse (DVP). Although PPG is largely employed in research, several aspects remain unknown. One of these is represented by the lack of information about how many waveform classes best express the variability in shape. In the literature, it is common to classify DVPs into four classes based on the dicrotic notch position. However, when working with real data, labelling waveforms with one of these four classes is no longer straightforward and may be challenging. The correct identification of the DVP shape could enhance the precision and the reliability of the extracted bio markers. In this work we proposed unsupervised machine learning and deep learning approaches to overcome the data labelling limitations. Concretely we performed a K-medoids based clustering that takes as input 1) DVP handcrafted features, 2) similarity matrix computed with the Derivative Dynamic Time Warping and 3) DVP features extracted from a CNN AutoEncoder. All the cited methods have been tested first by imposing four medoids representative of the Dawber classes, and after by automatically searching four clusters. We then searched the optimal number of clusters for each method using silhouette score, the prediction strength and inertia. To validate the proposed approaches we analyse the dissimilarities in the clinical data related to obtained clusters
