    Measurements of multijet event isotropies using optimal transport with the ATLAS detector

    International audienceA measurement of novel event shapes quantifying the isotropy of collider events is performed in 140 fb1^{-1} of proton-proton collisions with s=13\sqrt s=13 TeV centre-of-mass energy recorded with the ATLAS detector at CERN's Large Hadron Collider. These event shapes are defined as the Wasserstein distance between collider events and isotropic reference geometries. This distance is evaluated by solving optimal transport problems, using the 'Energy-Mover's Distance'. Isotropic references with cylindrical and circular symmetries are studied, to probe the symmetries of interest at hadron colliders. The novel event-shape observables defined in this way are infrared- and collinear-safe, have improved dynamic range and have greater sensitivity to isotropic radiation patterns than other event shapes. The measured event-shape variables are corrected for detector effects, and presented in inclusive bins of jet multiplicity and the scalar sum of the two leading jets' transverse momenta. The measured distributions are provided as inputs to future Monte Carlo tuning campaigns and other studies probing fundamental properties of QCD and the production of hadronic final states up to the TeV-scale

    Cet article revient sur le spectacle en allemand et suisse allemand "Der letzte Pfiff" ("Le dernier Coup de sifflet") de Christoph Marthaler, joué en 2022 au Théâtre de Bâle en Suisse. La réalité, avec l'épidémie de Covid et la guerre en Ukraine, a bouleversé les répétitions et le contenu même du spectacle. La création et la mise en scène de sons extrêmement violents rendent cette violence.Every country has its own police inspector on TV: the North American arrives at the scene of the crime with a big brown coffee cup and a gun, while the German appears leaning against the hot dog stand. This idiosyncrasy has been the subject of countless mockeries in a wide variety of parodies in theater and film, and inspired one of Swiss musician and theatre director Christoph Marthaler's latest plays, Le dernier Coup de sifflet (The last whistle), premiered in April 2022 at the Theater der Stadt Basel.With his loyal team of actors and musicians, Christoph Marthaler has developed a sound vocabulary over the years. The show was with part of his regular company and several actors from the Basel institution's Ensemble. I was lucky enough to attend the last three days of rehearsals before the premiere. The Covid epidemic had affected almost all the actors, one after the other; the tired cast didn't know if the play would go ahead. It was only on the eve of the premiere that the twelve actors were able to reunite. This article offers a multiple approach to this show (in German and Swiss German languages): from the spectator when I attended the rehearsals, from the theater researcher, and from Marthaler, with whom I spoke in October 2022.While Christoph Marthaler usually plays with insignificant everyday actions to show the "abysses of humanity" ("Die Abgründe der Menschheit") that move him in all his works, the "Last Whistle" is no exception, but takes a different tack with its use of extremely violent sounds. Two scenes with paroxysmal sound effects mark the intrusion of reality into the show.À chaque pays son inspecteur de police à la télévision : le Nord-américain arrive sur leslieux du crime avec un grand gobelet de café en carton brun et une arme à feu, quand l’Allemand apparaît accoudé au stand de hot-dogs. Sujet d’innombrables railleries dans les parodies les plus diverses au théâtre comme au cinéma, cette idiosyncrasie a inspiré l’une des dernières pièces du musicien et metteur en scène suisse Christoph Marthaler, Le dernier Coup de sifflet, créé en avril 2022 au théâtre de la ville de Bâle.Avec son équipe fidèle de comédiens et musiciens, Christoph Marthaler a développé unvocabulaire théâtral et sonore commun au fil des années. Le spectacle Le dernier Coup de sifflet a été créé avec une partie de sa troupe habituelle et plusieurs comédiens de l’Ensemble de l’institution bâloise en avril 2022. J’ai eu la chance d’assister aux trois derniers jours derépétitions avant la première. L’épidémie de Covid avait touché presque tous les acteurs les uns après les autres ; la troupe fatiguée ne savait pas si la pièce pourrait se jouer. Ce n’est que la veille de la première que les douze comédiens ont pu être de nouveau réunis. Cet article offre du spectacle en allemand et suisse allemand une approche croisant plusieurs regards : de la spectatrice lorsque j’ai assisté aux répétitions, de la chercheuse en théâtre, et de Marthaler avec lequel a eu lieu un entretien en octobre 2022.Alors qu’habituellement Christoph Marthaler joue sur des actions insignifiantes duquotidien pour montrer les « abysses de l’humanité » („Die Abgründe der Menschheit“) quil’émeuvent chez tout un chacun, Le dernier Coup de sifflet ne fait pas exception mais ouvre une autre voie par l’utilisation de sons d’une violence extrême. Deux scènes aux effets sonoresparoxystiques se distinguent en particulier, marquant l’effraction de la réalité dans le spectacle

    International audienceThe site of Khafajeh, excavated by the Oriental Institute of Chicago’s team in the 1930s, constitutes until today the backbone for the periodization of central Mesopotamia for the 3rd millennium BC.However, the archaeological levels of the Houses quarter have been the subject of intense debate since the 1980s, especially both from an urbanistic and a regional periodization perspective.Over the last 15 years, new chrono-stratigraphic interpretations of the site and Houses quarter as well have been possible thanks to the unpublished plans and excavation notebooks provided by the DiyArDa database of the Oriental Institute.This set of new data and its interpretations make it possible to propose a new solution to major stratigraphic problems raised by the ensemble constituted by the oval temple and the residential neighbourhoods that surround it

    International audienceThis project aims to take into account the singularity of a mycelium network in a mode of interaction with humans that is based on listening and attention. We are building a setup for the development of sensitive interactions with the mycelium, an organism that facilitates symbioses, through an interpretation of the specificity of its electrical expressions connected to our human musical world. To build this interaction we will develop AI models to map the behavior of the mycelium, co-compose sounds with the recorded and classified electrical variations and finally build an interspecific and sensitive relationship. This model will attempt to retain the dimension of otherness in sensory interaction. It will share an experimental process that will allow us to enter into a relationship with a non-human organism, to observe its behavior and to adjust our behavior in interaction with it. Thus questioning the notions of intelligence and adaptation in a three-agent human/AI/Mycelium compositional process. What would be the mycelium's intelligence compared to that of the human musician and that of the artificial intelligence: what do we mean by this? This installation addresses the importance of recognizing the otherness of non-human beings in the ecological project of caring for the living
