Park City lecture notes: around the inverse Galois problem
30 pagesThe inverse Galois problem asks whether any finite group can be realised as the Galois group of a Galois extension of the rationals. This problem and its refinements have stimulated a large amount of research in number theory and algebraic geometry in the past century, ranging from Noether's problem (letting X denote the quotient of the affine space by a finite group acting linearly, when is X rational?) to the rigidity method (if X is not rational, does it at least contain interesting rational curves?) and to the arithmetic of unirational varieties (if all else fails, does X at least contain interesting rational points?). The goal of the present notes, which formed the basis for three lectures given at the Park City Mathematics Institute in August 2022, is to provide an introduction to these topics

De (dis)continuités en ruptures: Le Projet professionnel infirmier au prisme de la crise sanitaire
International audienceMy purpose is to question the reconfigurations of meaning attributed by nursing students involved since in managing the health crisis March 2020 to their professional project. Based on the analysis of interviews conducted with students currently at the end of their training and young professionals, I seek to highlight how the epidemic may have modified their relationship to their planned profession, based on new knowledge considered as professionals. I hypothesize that the gap between their values, their nursing ideals and their experience in this health crisis, led these future professionals to become aware of certain limits usually kept in the shadows, which could upset the construction of their caregiver identity, even led them to think of themselves in a possible other, or even sometimes totally other by turning away from the initial professional project. In doing so, this led them to invest in symbolic material (knowledge, values) that had sometimes gone unacknowledged until that point.Notre propos vise à interroger les reconfigurations du sens attribué à leur projet professionnel par les étudiant·e·s infirmier·ère·s engagé·e·s depuis mars 2020 dans la gestion de la crise sanitaire dûe à la pandémie de covid-19. À partir de l’analyse d’entretiens menés auprès d’étudiant·e·s en fin de formation ou de jeunes professionnel·le·s, nous cherchons à mettre en exergue en quoi la pandémie peut avoir modifié leur rapport au métier projeté, fondé sur de nouveaux savoirs considérés comme professionnels. Nous faisons l’hypothèse que l’écart entre leurs valeurs, leurs idéaux de soignant·e·s et leur vécu dans cette crise sanitaire, ont amené ces futur·e·s professionnel·le·s à prendre conscience de certaines limites tenues habituellement dans l’ombre, qui ont pu bouleverser la construction de leur identité de soignant·e, voire les ont amené·e·s à se penser dans un possible autre, voire parfois totalement autre en se détournant du projet professionnel initial. The Selective Pressures That Led to the Rarity of Venomous Mammals
Mammals are not typically thought of as being venomous, yet venom is present in four orders: Monotremata (platypuses and echidnas), Eulipotyphla (shrews and solenodons), Chiroptera (bats), and Primates. Of the monotremes, only the male platypus is venomous, and unlike the other three orders, it envenomates through a hindlimb spur. The other three orders have venoms carried in salivary or other oral secretions and deliver them by biting or licking. Some Eulipotyphlans possess grooved teeth for venom delivery, which helps venom evolution be traced across their phylogeny. In Chiroptera, venom is restricted to the vampire bats for use in feeding, and in primates only certain lorises are venomous. Given the distant relationships in species between the orders, and the variety of environments each lives in, it is highly unlikely venom evolved only once. Instead, it is far more likely that venom evolved multiple times, with each order having its own specific reason. The emergence and retention of venom in mammals have a variety of hypotheses which are discussed and debated below. A particularly interesting case is that of the slow loris, which may have evolved venom for Müllerian mimicry with the spectacled cobra, a venomous species of snake
