NETWORKS, COALITIONS AND THE CONTESTATION OF DAM REMOVAL ACROSS POLITICAL AND INSTITUTIONAL SCALES IN FRANCE AND NEW ENGLAND (USA)
International audienceConflicts over dam removal have attracted substantial scholarly attention over the past years, although this research has generally focused on evaluating local-scale conflicts. Far less is known about the role of institutional frameworks in shaping conflicts at regional and national scales. We complement and extend this discussion by highlighting the politics of scale in dam removal conflicts, specifically by a comparison of cases in northwest of France and New England (United States) where the pace of dam removals has accelerated in recent years. We interpret these cases using a framework of scalar politics articulated with actor-network theory. Based on detailed qualitative data, we contrast the case of France, where local conflicts over dam removal have been debated at the national scale, with the debates about dam removal in New England, which have consistently remained almost entirely at local scales. We point out three elements to analyze this contrast: the strategic scale of deployment by opponents to further their interest, the role of dams as brokering devices to foster the horizontal network of actors and things prior to upscaling, and the support on existing scalar arrangements to upscale conflicts
The impact of educational chatbot on student learning experience
International audienceArtificial Intelligence (AI) technologies have increasingly become vital in our eve- ryday lives. Education is one of the most visible domains in which these technolo- gies are being used. Conversational Agents (CAs) are among the most prominent AI systems for assisting teaching and learning processes. Their integration into an e-learning system can provide replies suited to each learner’s specific needs, allow- ing them to study at their own pace. In this paper, based on recent advancements in Natural Language Processing (NLP) and deep learning techniques, we present an experimental implementation of an educational chatbot intended to instruct second- ary school learners Logo, an educational programming language. The related chat- bot was implemented and evaluated in Moroccan public schools with the support of teachers from the Regional Center for Education and Training Professions of Souss Massa. The experiments included 109 students grouped into three separate classes. One is a control class group that uses a traditional approach, while the other two are experimental groups that employ digital content and the chatbot-based method. Preliminary findings indicate that employing chatbots can greatly enhance student learning experiences by allowing them to study at their own speed with less stress, saving them time, and keeping them motivated. Furthermore, integrating these AI systems into a smart classroom will not only create a supportive environment by encouraging good interactions with students, it will also allow learners to be more engaged and achieve better academic objectives

Intersectional Person Perception: A Scoping Review of Studies Investigating the Roles of Category Relationships and Cognitive Processes
International audienceThis review considered experimental studies that used an intersectional framework in order to examine (1) how perceived relationship between the categories in a given intersection impacts the perception of its members and (2) how intersectional person perception has been studied through different cognitive processes. A systematic search in databases identified 5,393 records, and a screening processes resulted in 43 articles reporting 110 studies. The way intersectional targets were cognitively processed depended on contextual factors as well as on the perceived relationship between intersected identities (e.g., perceived [in-]congruence between identities). Less prototypical intersectional targets (e.g., Black gay men) sometimes experienced intersectional invisibility, facing both relative advantages (e.g., being less associated with certain negative stereotypes), and disadvantages (e.g., being overlooked, less recognized) compared to more prototypical members of their constituent ingroups (e.g., Black people, gay men). Future work should incorporate observed exceptions to these patterns and expand the cultural context of analysis
