The Satrapies of the Persian Empire in Egypt
No full textInternational audienceAbstract For a long time dominated by Egypt, the historiography of the African holdings of the Persian Empire has in recent years given a more prominent role to Nubia and especially to Libya. This chapter shows that Cambyses, after defeating the last ruler of the Saite Dynasty (Twenty-sixth Dynasty), likely did not limit his ambitions to Egypt. However, the difficulty that the Persian Empire experienced throughout the fifth and fourth centuries bc in maintaining their power in the region was arguably a factor in why the Persian authorities chose to concentrate on the Nile valley. The variety and wealth of written sources discovered in Egypt make it one of the few satrapies where the functioning of the imperial administration is best documented at all levels of its action. The political investment of the Persian Empire in Egypt matches the strong presence of Egyptians throughout the imperial lands, notably in the military forces but also in the heart of power in Susa and Persepolis
« Une traduction du dedans » : Hopkins dans le fonds Senghor
No full textInternational audienceLeopold Sédar Senghor was also the occasional translator of several English poets, including Gerard Manley Hopkins, for whom he always professed intense admiration. The Bibliothèque nationale de France holds several first drafts and revised typescripts of his translation of Hopkins’s masterpiece, The Wreck of the Deutschland, so we can see the progress of this challenging work he conceived as “a pleasant pastime”. Our reading of the translation and its drafts reveals a surprising poetic proximity (in terms of topics, rhythm and tropes) between Senghor’s own poetry and his translation of Hopkins, giving rise to two hypotheses: did Senghor impart his own style on the translation (a rather common practice among poet-translators) or does the whole enterprise testify to an unexpected poetic filiation?Leopold Sédar Senghor fut aussi le traducteur occasionnel de quelques poètes anglais, à commencer par Gerard Manley Hopkins, pour lequel il a toujours professé une intense admiration. La Bibliothèque nationale conserve plusieurs dactylographies corrigées de sa traduction du chef-d’œuvre de Hopkins, « The Wreck of the Deutschland », si bien que l’on peut observer la progression de ce travail difficile, quoique conçu comme une « agréable récréation ». Notre lecture de la traduction et de ses brouillons révèle une étonnante proximité poétique (au regard du thème, des rythmes et des figures) entre l’œuvre propre de Senghor et sa traduction de Hopkins, faisant apparaître deux hypothèses : s’agit-il d’un placage stylistique (pratique courante chez les poètes traducteurs) ou d’une véritable filiation poétique
La Protohistoire du Pakistan : Recherches pionnières des missions archéologiques françaises au Balochistan et au Sindh
No full textInternational audienceSince 1958, the French archaeological missions supported by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs have significantly enhanced the knowledge of the Protohistory period in Pakistan. This paper retraces the pioneering work of the 'Mission Archéologique de l'Indus' in Sindh and Balochistan, which aimed at better understanding the emergence and development of the Indus Valley civilisation. In Makran, a coastal region that has long remained on the fringes of archaeological research, studies by the Mission Archéologique Française au Makran have revealed the dynamism of a Chalcolithic and Bronze Age settlement (5th - 3rd millennia BCE) witnessing close links with the south-eastern part of the Iranian Plateau, the Indus Valley and the Omani Peninsula. Current research by the French Archaeological Mission in the Indus Basin at Chanhu-daro, in Sindh, in cooperation with the Culture, Tourism, Antiquities and Archives Department, Government of Sindh, offers a new vision of the first urban and craft developments of the Indus Civilization
