Mallarmé, Gauguin : "l'explication orphique de la Terre"

    No full text

‘On Vient de Fusiller un des Nôtres’: A Quantitative Study of Military Executions in the French Army during WW1

Early Access : OCT 2022International audienceThis paper explores the issue of French executions during the Great War in a quantitative perspective. Based on the 'Shot in the First World War' database of the Ministry of Defense, we first provide a statistical portrait of the French soldiers who were sentenced to death by courts-martial or summarily executed. Then, we analyze the temporal distribution of executions using a regression approach. More specifically, we investigate whether the variations in the number of executions over time were related to the intensity of engagements. Finally, focusing on the soldiers' place of birth, we examine the differences across counties (departements) in the execution rate. Our results suggest that the vast majority of the executed soldiers were 'poilus' like the others who found themselves before a firing squad for having committed a fault in a moment of weakness, often after being involved in particularly bloody fighting, and sometimes under the influence of alcohol. Their acts were probably, in most cases, much more driven by survival instinct than by pacifist motives or other political considerations

Combination and summary of ATLAS dark matter searches interpreted in a 2HDM with a pseudo-scalar mediator using 139 fb1^{-1} of s=13\sqrt{s} = 13 TeV pppp collision data

    No full text
International audienceResults from a wide range of searches targeting different experimental signatures with and without missing transverse momentum (ETmissE_{\mathrm{T}}^{\mathrm{miss}}) are used to constrain a Two-Higgs-Doublet Model (2HDM) with an additional pseudo-scalar mediating the interaction between ordinary and dark matter (2HDM+aa). The analyses use up to 139 fb1^{-1} of proton-proton collision data at a centre-of-mass energy s=13\sqrt{s}=13 TeV recorded with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider between 2015-2018. The results from three of the most sensitive searches are combined statistically. These searches target signatures with large ETmissE_{\mathrm{T}}^{\mathrm{miss}} and a leptonically decaying ZZ boson; large ETmissE_{\mathrm{T}}^{\mathrm{miss}} and a Higgs boson decaying to bottom quarks; and production of charged Higgs bosons in final states with top and bottom quarks, respectively. Constraints are derived for several common as well as new benchmark scenarios within the 2HDM+aa

    Debiasing thinking among non-WEIRD reasoners

    No full text
International audienceHuman reasoning has been shown to be biased in a variety of situations. While most studies have focused on samples of WEIRD participants (from Western Educated Industrialized Rich and Democratic societies), the sparse non-WEIRD data on the topic suggest an even stronger propensity for biased reasoning. This could be explained by a competence issue (people lack the ability to integrate logical knowledge into their reasoning) or a performance issue (people possess the logical knowledge but do not know it is relevant). We addressed this question using a debiasing paradigm with the base-rate task on a sample of non-industrialized people, the Himba of Namibia. After a short training, most participants were debiased, lending credence to the performance account. Debiasing was however to some extent boosted by schooling and living environment suggesting that competence also plays a role (in that more acquired knowledge allows for higher training benefit). Results imply that debias interventions can be successfully employed to boost sound reasoning around the world

International audienceThe team of the French-Kuwaiti mission studying the Hellenistic period at Ikaros-Failaka, conducted a first phase of work on the fortress from 2011 to 2018, with the objectives of completing the study of the fortifications, beginning that of the internal circulation, to clarify the chronology of the site, and to preserve the remains uncovered during its work and those of its predecessors.
