    Optional Ⓐntology of Anarchism

    No full text
It would be a regrettable omission not to pay attention to the fact that “power” itself can be the subject of philosophical inquiry. However, “the philosophy of power” is not ontology (and it is precisely about ontology that we want to talk), just as it would be wrong to read epistemological treatises as if they were talking about something other than our cognitive abilities (does Kant tell us what the world is really like?), except in those cases when we say that “everything is power or “everything is our cognitive abilities.” We would like to move away from such logic of generalization. The philosophy of power proceeds from the assumption that power is its central concept. Beginningless ontology—Ⓐntology, has no center. But this does not mean that it does not speak of power. Power is present in it as an object of thought, but not as a center, but as one of many

Restoration and Land-based Learning at mâmawêyatitân centre located in Regina, Saskatchewan

    No full text
This report summarizes the work that mâmawêyatitân centre staff, students and volunteers have accomplished to convert a patch of school grounds into a native prairie garden. The restoration project has two main goals: 1) Replace underused lawn with native prairie plant communities on an urban site, and 2) Establish a land-based learning space for community members and the student body of Scott Collegiate. Jo Shepherd, the mâmawêyatitân centre coordinator, started the project in 2023 and I joined her team in spring 2024 to help with garden restoration and to assist with facilitating Scott classes. As of winter 2025, over 1500+ native prairie plugs were planted, invasives species have been managed, several high school classes have engaged in land-based learning, 10 community work-bees were held, a workshop was hosted by a Cree knowledge keeper on sage harvesting, and Jo Shepherd and I presented a poster at the annual Native Prairie Restoration and Reclamation Workshop. Multiple challenges have been tackled including lack of student engagement, vandalism, litter, invasive species and inadequate drainage. A third project goal is to transfer the responsibilities of maintenance to Scott classes and Growing Young Movers employees to ensure the long-term survival of the garden. We aim to make the garden a welcoming gathering space where plants, seeds and traditional knowledge can be shared among community members, students and staff

PERCEIVED STEPFAMILY CHALLENGES: A CROSS-SECTIONAL DESCRIPTIVE STUDY AMONG STEPFAMILIES AND SOCIAL AND HEALTH CARE PROFESSIONALS

    No full text
Professionals working in family services often come into contact with stepfamilies. Issues that often need professional support and stepfamily intervention include divorce, custody disputes, children’s stress and adjustment problems, and challenges new stepfamilies encounter. The aim of this cross-sectional descriptive study was to explore the challenges of stepfamilies as perceived by the families themselves and by the professionals working in services for children, adolescents, and families. Data were collected in the spring of 2018 using semi-structured questionnaires among social and health care professionals and stepfamilies. The data were analyzed using inductive thematic analysis. The challenges reported related mainly to the complexities of managing a stepfamily, including parenting, role conflicts, issues arising from the former life, children’s adaptation difficulties, and stepcouple relationships. Five themes were identified from the responses of professionals and parents in stepfamilies: many overlapping stories, children living amid changes, parenting under cross-pressure, love relationship is hard to maintain, and rocky road to a balanced family. These results provide perspectives from a wide range of stakeholders regarding the challenges stepfamilies face. Our study may offer valuable information for professionals working with stepfamilies and for researchers and decision-makers planning interventions for stepfamilies

HONORING THE VOICES OF YOUTH IN OUT-OF-HOME CARE: INSIGHTS INTO RESTRICTIONS DURING THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC, AND FUTURE PERSPECTIVES

    No full text
Recent studies focusing on children and youth in care have emphasized the increased challenges that emerged with the restrictions related to the COVID-19 pandemic. There is, however, not enough comprehensive research on how caregivers could have systematically improved the social participation of young people in care. Here we present initial results based on the qualitative part of a joint project, entitled “JuPa”, which focuses on the social participation of young people during and after the COVID-19 pandemic in Germany. Due to the relevance of young people’s voices in research and practice, the project includes participatory methods to involve youth in care systematically. In the qualitative part of JuPa, 40 interviews with youth in care were analyzed. Pandemic-related effects on youth in care, their coping strategies, and their concepts for the future are emphasized. The youth were optimistic about the future despite the impact the COVID-19 pandemic had had on their lives. The described challenges make clear the necessity of implementing youth-friendly children’s rights

BREAKING THE CYCLE OF POVERTY FOR CHILDREN THROUGH SOCIAL SUPPORT AND EDUCATION IN ROMANIA

    No full text
In Romania in 2024, 33.9% of children faced poverty and social exclusion, the third highest rate in the EU. Despite the European Child Guarantee’s initiatives[1], public resources remain insufficient to meet the needs of vulnerable children. Non-governmental organizations (NGOs), such as our own CONCORDIA Humanitarian Organization, play a crucial role in addressing these gaps through multidisciplinary interventions. CONCORDIA’s Day Center model offers essential services to improve school retention and reduce family abandonment, including educational support, social assistance, and medical care. Recognizing the need for systemic impact, CONCORDIA launched CentreZi RO, a national network of Day Centers, to foster collaboration among service providers and advocate for policy improvements. However, the existing 860 centers are far from sufficient, with an estimated 3,000 more required nationwide. To sustainably expand its reach, CONCORDIA has introduced a social franchise model, enabling the structured replication of its intervention strategy while maintaining service quality. This model prioritizes child participation, family engagement, and community empowerment, aligning with the Lundy Model of Child Participation. Strengthening public–private partnerships and increasing investment in social services are essential for breaking the cycle of intergenerational poverty. Through integrated social and educational interventions, CONCORDIA demonstrates a scalable solution for reducing child poverty and fostering long-term systemic change. [1] The European Child Guarantee is an EU initiative to ensure that all children at risk of poverty or social exclusion have access to essential services like health care, education, housing, and nutrition. Romania adopted its National Action Plan for the Implementation of the Child Guarantee in 2023, aiming to reduce the number of vulnerable children by at least 500,000 by 2030
