Migrants’ integration in Greece and the role of social and solidarity economy
No full textIn the aftermath of the 2015 refugee "crisis", the integration of asylum seekers and refugees began to feature in the public debate. The traditional picture of Greece, as a reception and transit but not destination country, has shifted to a fragmented integration framework since the 1990s. This paper critically assesses contemporary integration policies in Greece. On one hand, it argues these integration policies are ones of assimilation. On the other hand, it explores the alternative, inclusive framework being introduced by social and solidarity economy practices. Based on qualitative desk and field research conducted in Greece between 2020 and 2021, it discusses how integration has been intertwined with assimilationist perspectives, analyzes the profile of integration policies, and explores the contributions of alternative practices set out by social and solidarity economy initiatives
Rap and Realism: The Importance of Class-Based Authenticity as Exemplified by Gustave Courbet and Contemporary Rappers
No full textOver a century and a half since his passing, scholars remember Gustave Courbet (1819–1877) as a French painter who expanded the boundaries of art through his rejection of traditionally imposed artistic conventions and cultivation of a larger-than-life persona. As a master of self-promotion and image creation, Courbet’s unique self-positioning and performance of identity are frequently explored within contemporary scholarship. However, extant literature has yet to consider the similarities between Courbet’s performance of identity and that of influential contemporary rap artists. Looking to artistic themes employed by the painter and his self-presentation, I argue that Courbet tailored his identity performance so that audiences conflated his artistic output with his public image, both of which drew upon his rural background to suggest a disadvantaged socioeconomic status—a background lauded by his supporters as providing Courbet with the authenticity required for artistic legitimacy. Furthermore, I argue that contemporary rap artists perform their identity in much of the same manner. Like Courbet, contemporary rap artists continuously enact qualities associated with a low socioeconomic status and reference this social standing in their music to fuse their personal reputation and musical output, which affords these artists the authenticity required for success
Quand le cheval paraît : Représentations et fonctions diégétiques de la figure équine dans la fiction française contemporaine (1933-2016).
No full textHorses are the vectors of multiple representations related to their specific abilities and properties. These have endowed it, especially in the mythical narrative, with an image in turn positive (magic horses, divine, solar) or negative (horses of nightmare, infernal, psychopumps).
By examining a varied corpus of French short stories and novels published between 1933 and 2016 (Paul Morand, Jean Giono, Claude Simon, Richard Millet, Laurent Mauvignier), we will focus on the peculiarities of equine figures in contemporary french fiction, their functions in the story and their places in the construction of the narrative.
The appearance of the horse in the novel also allows us to question the notion of scene and to define the «equestrian scene», returning to the definitions and the means of analysis given by Gérard Genette (Figures III), or Stéphane Lojkine (La Scène de roman). This theoretical journey allows us to question the existence of a horse-type, in the Balzacian sense, an autonomous and characteristic figure that can be found in the various stories through the equestrian scenes. The analysis of these scenes, which presuppose an interaction between the horse and the other characters, will lead us to answer the question of how the presence of horses allows the dramatization of the story.Le cheval est le vecteur d’un certain nombre de représentations liées à ses capacités et propriétés spécifiques. Celles-ci l’ont doté, particulièrement dans le récit mythique, d’une image tour à tour positive (chevaux magiques, divins, solaires) ou négative (chevaux de cauchemar, infernaux, psychopompes).
En nous penchant sur un corpus varié d’œuvres françaises écrites entre 1930 et 2016 (Paul Morand, Jean Giono, Claude Simon, Richard Millet, Laurent Mauvignier), nous nous intéresserons aux particularités des figures équines dans la fiction contemporaine, à leurs fonctions dans la diégèse et à leurs places dans la construction du récit.
L’apparition du cheval dans le roman nous permet aussi de questionner la notion de scène et de définir la « scène équestre », en revenant aux définitions et aux moyens d’analyse donnés par Gérard Genette (Figures III), ou Stéphane Lojkine (La Scène de roman). Ce cheminement théorique nous permet de nous interroger sur l’existence d’un cheval-type, au sens balzacien, une figure autonome et caractéristique que l’on retrouve dans les différents récits par le biais des scènes équestres. L’analyse de ces scènes, qui supposent une interaction entre le cheval et les autres personnages, nous mènera à répondre à la question de savoir comment la présence du cheval permet la dramatisation du récit
Wetland Revegetation in an Agriculturally Degraded Western Red Cedar (Thuja plicata) Forest on Galiano Island, B.C.
No full textCedars for the Next Century is a three-year, three-phase wetland restoration project led by theGaliano Conservancy Association (GCA). The project goal is to restore the hydrological regime andnative species composition of the historical Western red cedar (Thuja plicata) swamp ecosystem inthe East Branch of the Chrystal Creek watershed, located at the Millard Learning Centre on GalianoIsland. Prior to restoration, the site contained ditches, an agricultural field, and a secondary growthWestern red cedar forest. Due to long-term land use, the East Branch severely lacked productivesoils, hydrophilic vegetation, and surface water sequestration. As part of Phase 2 of Cedars for theNext Century, GCA planned a full hydrological restoration for the East Branch, including culvertinstallation, stream and wetland creation, and native species planting. To achieve biodiversityobjectives, GCA required a revegetation strategy targeting riparian species typical to cedar-swampecosystems. This strategy was co-developed with GCA and included an inventory of existing plants,a Terrestrial Ecosystem Map (TEM), and Indicator Species Group (ISG) analysis. The TEM identifiedthree site series in the East Branch, 05 Cw-Bg, 06 Cw-Fd and 11 Cw-Skunk Cabbage, and the ISGanalysis informed the selection of moisture-tolerant native species for planting. To prepare the EastBranch for revegetation, the GCA team applied “rough and loose” mechanical decompaction torestore topographical complexity and create new wetlands, around which 33 species (1298 totalplants) were planted in November 2022. Fencing, cages, and burlap were used to mitigate invasivespecies encroachment and hyper-abundant black tail deer (Odocoileus hemionus) browsing.Recommendations include monitoring for plant success and Western red cedar regeneration toinform plant selection for the Phase 3 site in 2023

No full textThis paper is an attempt to approach the complexities of interdependent lifeworlds through an engagement with the multiple appearances and becomings of Air. Air’s mysterious unknowability calls forth a sense of deep listening and attunement, including the ways in which elemental and more-than-human communities communicate or encounter one another. Seeking to practice ethical and political pedagogies within contemporary early childhood care and education, the authors orient this paper within a posthumanist theoretical framework while engaging in interdisciplinary collaborations with environmental humanities and postpositivist, poststructural, feminist writings. This paper employs lively storytelling in an attempt to decenter humancentric views and to create the possibility for others to be heard
