Bordering the Future? The ‘Male Gaze’ in the Blade Runner Films and Originating Novel

    No full text
Philip K. Dick (1928-1982), author of numerous science fiction narratives from the 1950s-1980s, some of which Hollywood made into films, grappled with the nature of reality, the meaning of humanness, and border crossing between humans and androids (called ‘replicants’ in the films). The socially constructed female and male protagonists in these narratives have yet to be analyzed with a gender gaze that draws on border studies. This paper analyzes two Blade Runner films, compares them to the Philip K. Dick (PKD) narrative, and applies gender, feminist, and border concepts, particularly border crossings from human to sentient beings and androids. In this paper, I argue that the men who wrote and directed the films established and crossed multiple metaphoric borders, but wore gender blinders that thereby reinforced gendered borders as visualized and viewed in the U.S. and global film markets yet never addressed the profoundly radical border crossing notions from PKD

Forest Understory Monitoring Protocols for Stanley Park Ecology Society Vancouver, BC

    No full text
The integrity of native forest vegetation in Stanley Park (Vancouver, B.C.) is threatened by anthropogenic stressors and climate change. While preparing the second State of the Park Report for Stanley Park, the non-profit organization Stanley Park Ecology Society (SPES) identified the need to implement ecological monitoring protocols to assess the productivity and phenology of native vegetation. In partnership with SPES, the author identified two established protocols: the ‘red huckleberry productivity’ protocol and the ‘salmonberry first bloom’ protocol. In April and October 2017, locations for long-term monitoring plots were surveyed and selected for both protocols. Methods included review of a forest strata and roads/trails map and field surveys to assess topographic and man-made features. In June 2017, year 1 data was collected in a pilot of the red huckleberry protocol. Trends in native plant productivity and phenology can be interpreted using standard statistical tests after at least five years of data collection. Four next steps are recommended: (1) reselect shorter stem segments for the red huckleberry protocol and discount year 1 data; (2) purchase permanent ID tags and monitoring equipment; (3) provide training sessions for citizen science volunteers; and (4) monitor and respond to changes in site conditions

Restoration and Learning Gardens in Georgia Park

    No full text
Georgia Park is a 2 hectare parcel of land in the southern end of Campbell River, BC. Impacted by construction during the 1990’s, the land is disturbed by soil compaction, altered hydrology and invasive plant species. Inspired by Lisa Walls, a teacher at Georgia Park Elementary, Greenways Trust got engaged to fund restoration work on the site in the spring of 2018. This project offers a vegetation survey of the site and plans for creating two native plant learning gardens for students and teachers to use as an educational resource as well as recommendations for blackberry removal and native species planting. The project was implemented in the fall of 2018 with mechanical removal of the blackberries followed by planting of conifers and shrubs. The learning gardens are implemented with planting of native shrubs and herbs to enhance biodiversity and enhance the use of the site as an outdoor classroom
