Transmedial Worlds with Social Impact: Exploring Intergenerational Learning in Collaborative Video Game Design
This article’s focus is the creation of intergenerational game design experiences supported by phygital video games (i.e., games that feature both digital and physical elements) for children 8–12 years of age and elders 65 years and over living in Paris and Bagnolet, France. The purpose of the article is twofold: first, to give an account of our protocol activity to highlight the implementation difficulties associated with this kind of intergenerational gameplay, and second, to inspire researchers, educators, and caregivers to include innovative uses of transmedia world building and collaborative game design as tools to connect different generations and foster community participation in intergenerational programs
Restoration of Wetland Systems of Cootes Paradise Marsh and Grindstone Creek Marsh
Following the mandates and direction of the Royal Botanical Gardens Act of 1989, the Royal Botanical Gardens (RBG) is at the forefront of conservation in the Hamilton, Burlington and Dundas regions of Southern Ontario. Much of this highly urbanized area is now stewarded by the RBG and its affiliates. This report wil demonstrate the spring and summer restoration efforts, within the context of the Wetland Restoration Plan 2016-2021, and the long-term goals of RBG owned and held in trust wetlands (Theysmeyer et al. 2016). For the purposes of this academic project, I have been permitted by the RBG\u27s head of Natural Lands, Tys Theysmeyer, to participate in the Wetland Restoration Plan 2016-2021
Tetayut (Sandhill/Shady) Creek Restoration: Removing barriers to fish passage at the Pat Bay Highway (17) in Central Saanich, BC
Tetayut (Sandhill/Shady) Creek is located in Central Saanich, BC where habitat connectivity issues have existed for decades as a result of a 54 m long concrete culvert under the Patricia Bay highway (Highway 17). The BC Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure owned culvert is located approximately 2.2 km upstream of the Juan de Fuca Strait where it conveys water onto land owned by the Saanich Historical Artifacts Society. High velocity flows through the culvert have resulted in channel degradation and scour leading to a perched outlet that prevents the biologically important and culturally valued fish species in the Creek from accessing approximately 2.0 km of upstream aquatic habitat. Removal of this barrier required an understanding of the watershed processes as well as the expected discharges during periods of drought and flooding to evaluate the effectiveness of tailwater control modifications. Through careful data collection and desktop modelling it was determined that instream restoration works would promote fish passage while having little to no impact on the upstream hydraulics of the culvert. Co-operation with the Peninsula Streams Society was critical in the delivery of a timely and cost effective solution that lead to the construction of two Newbury-style rock riffles that eliminated the perched culvert. A monitoring program is planned to determine if the upstream habitat sees recruitment of native salmonids over the next five years

"A Revolution Marches on Two Feet:" The MK’s People’s War in N’wamitwa and Beyond
In the waning days of apartheid, an operative of Umkhonto we Sizwe, the armed wing of South Africa’s most powerful dissident organization the African National Congress, returned to his home community of N’wamitwa after over a decade in exile. His mission was to spark a people’s war, an imported form of revolutionary warfare developed by Mao Zedong and perfected by the North Vietnamese in their revolutionary struggles. The goal of a people’s war is ultimately to involve an entire population in a conflict, eventually crushing a powerful state actor between a mobilized populace and a guerilla army. Through interviews with an insurgent who took part in the uprising in N’wamitwa, this piece seeks to tell the story of the early stages of the people’s war in N’wamitwa and to place the uprising in the context of the ANC’s national revolutionary strategy
