Guides, mentors, maîtres et disciples. D’Eschyle à Diderot et Updike, ou l’inversion de la relation de maître à disciple

    No full text
From (M/m)entor to master or guide, the function of the tutor /trainer has been mapped by various authors in Western monarchies. One man questioned this apparent consensus in XVIIIth c. France : Diderot ‘s evolution in this respect is striking and the reason why his position shifted is clearly related to his discovering the character of Prometheus in the Greek text.  Hie may still be found to have post-modern followers, even in contemporary America

Feminine Essentialism and Compulsory Maternity in the Works of Mary Wollstonecraft

    No full text
Mary Wollstonecraft is often credited as the “aesthetic foremother of feminist expository prose” (Gubar 454), but her status as a feminist icon is problematized by her essentialist ideology regarding gender and motherhood. While her work presents a radical imperative for the civic equality of the sexes rooted in a fundamentally genderless capacity for reason, this imperative is nevertheless constructed around traditional notions of motherhood as the essential role of the female. This essay seeks to explore the dissonance between her clear feminist imperative for change and her tendency to err towards feminine essentialism

The Gendered Texture of Clothing and Art in Margaret Atwood’s Cat’s Eye

    No full text
Margaret Atwood’s novel Cat’s Eye (1988) is focused on the distinct differences between boys and girls and how they must present themselves. Texture, in both clothing and art, plays a central role in how the protagonist, Elaine, perceives these gender expectations. She is focused on the textures that differentiate boys and girls clothing and how they reflect her discomfort with this binary. As an adult, Elaine continues to focus on gender and texture through her paintings made with egg tempera. Her chosen medium is free of texture and the gendered connotations of the harsh and soft clothing of her childhood, providing her control over her desired gender expression

Expanding the Constitutional Right to State-Funded Legal Counsel to Address the British Columbia Housing Crisis

    No full text
During the 2017 British Columbia provincial election campaign, the housing affordability crisis emerged as one of the top issues for voters. The housing crisis represents a much larger issue of affordability in British Columbia. The civil justice system is another realm in which the gap is widening between the “haves” and the “have nots” in the province. This paper focuses on the inadequate provision of civil legal aid, which is a specific component of the access to justice issue. The Supreme Court of Canada has recognized a constitutional right to state-funded civil legal counsel in certain circumstances based on the right to security of the person, as enshrined in section 7 of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. This paper argues that the courts could extend the constitutional right to state-funded counsel to a tenant who is being evicted from their public housing unit by the British Columbia Housing Management Commission. Due to the lack of affordable housing options, eviction could jeopardize the tenant’s section 7 right to security of the person. Consequently, the tenant could require legal representation in order to ensure a fair hearing. Furthermore, the tenant’s eviction proceeding would likely be triggered by the state

Pictures of Health: Gendered Medical Advertising in the Daily Colonist from 1867 to 1917

    No full text
Canadian perceptions of gender radically shifted between the formation of the Dominion in 1867 and the end of the First World War in 1918. While Victorian gender ideals grew increasingly unstable as new roles for men and women appeared, such as the suffragette, the new woman, and the shell-shocked soldier, Canadians grew anxious over the gendered health of men and women. Alongside these social developments, this period also saw the mass-proliferation of advertisements in Canadian newspapers, many of which exploited contemporary concerns over men’s and women’s physical and mental health to sell their products. In the following essay, I will examine health advertisements in eight issues of the Daily Colonist (Victoria’s most popular newspaper in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century) published between 1867 and 1917, paying particular attention to three types of health ads: ads for patent medicine, ads for medical practitioners, and non-medical ads for health-preserving products. I argue that these gendered medical advertisements are uniquely positioned to help us understand late-nineteenth- and early twentieth-century gender dynamics precisely due to their role in both responding to and shaping gender ideals
