Approaching Critical Service-Learning: A Model for Reflection on Positionality and Possibility
Get PDFMitchell (2008) asks faculty to adopt “a ‘critical’ approach to community service learning” (p. 50), one that focuses on social change, redistribution of power, and the development of authentic relationships. However, the path of transformation from traditional to critical service-learning practices remains unexplored. In this autoethnographic reflective essay, five individuals share their journey from higher education institutions as they engaged in a community of practice examining their own questions, assumptions, experiences, and positionality to more fully understand critical service-learning (CSL). This essay documents self-discovery through an iterative reflection process, detailing the approach used to examine CSL and interrogate the relationship between positionality and critical theory. This process provides a roadmap for service-learning practitioners interested in developing their own critical consciousness. Key outcomes include a conceptual model positioning CSL on a spectrum, in which one may approach without necessarily achieving social change, and the development of a toolkit of CSL resources
Lessons Learned from STEM Entrepreneurship Academy
No full textThis article describes the STEM Entrepreneurship Academy, a week-long summer camp that exposes students from the Black Belt region of Alabama to a college campus and opportunities in the STEM disciplines. A unique feature of this program is the entrepreneurial focus on STEM. Students interact with university faculty, staff, and students while participating in a variety of hands-on activities. They are also charged with designing a final project that integrates the content they have learned over the course of the week. A descriptive analysis of the students who participated reveals several things. Students who participate exhibit a high interest in STEM careers, with females showing a significantly stronger interest in medical-oriented fields. Lessons learned include the importance of exposing students to college campuses, offering more STEM opportunities, and strengthening partnerships with high school educators in rural communities.
Participatory Pedagogy: Oral History in the Service-Learning Classroom
Get PDFThis article seeks to demonstrate how using oral history in a service-learning course offers an opportunity for students, faculty, and community to engage in participatory pedagogy. Through oral history, students learn to listen, reflect, and see how their learning is achieved in connection with the community. As a pedagogical tool, oral history engenders knowledge production that highlights collaboration and expands students’ understanding of equality and social justice, as Latin@ members of the community become active participants through their roles as narrators.
Reciprocity and Scholarly Connections: Faculty Perspectives About the Role of Community Engaged Work in Their Career Vitality
Get PDFThis qualitative study examined 25 faculty members representing varying ranks, institutional types, disciplines, racial/ethnic backgrounds, and gender with current or recent participation in community-engaged research, service, and/or teaching. The study explored their perspectives on whether or not and, if applicable, in what ways their participation in community-engaged work influenced their vitality. For 23 of the 25 participants, community-engaged work positively affected their vitality. Interview analysis and document review revealed two aspects of this work as most significant: reciprocity (mutual benefits between faculty and community partners) and scholarly connections (integrating content expertise and community work). Implications for practice are discussed.
Shaped by Campus Culture: Intersections Between Transformative Learning, Civic Engagement, and Institutional Mission
Get PDFThis ethnographic case study describes how civically engaged students understand their commitment to social change. Literature on civic engagement and service-learning abounds, yet gaps remain in understanding how students understand and act on campus mission and culture with respect to civic engagement. Using the frameworks of transformative learning, emerging adulthood, and civic engagement, this study attempted to understand a subculture of 24 undergraduate students at a Jesuit university. Ethnographic case study methodology was used in order to understand broader context and culture within which this subculture existed. Findings help to further understand how students interact with campus mission and culture relative to civic engagement. Emic and etic themes were distilled into 10 overarching umbrella themes. Implications for future research focus on the intersection of culture, context, and civic engagement at both faith-based and secular institutions
The impact of the capitalization of operating leases: A guide for individual investors
No full textWe provide a brief explanation of the new Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB) standard requiring firms to move their off-balance sheet operating leases onto the balance sheet beginning in 2019, and then discuss how the new rule might affect the stock and bond values in the largest 1,000 listed firms. In short, despite dramatic increases in on-balance sheet liabilities in several industries, wecaution investors not to anticipate changes in their stock or bond valuations resulting from this change. Because asset values change in response to new information, and the information we present in this article regarding changes in total assets and debt ratios is currently available in the notes to the financial statements and from data providers such as Bloomberg, it is already being used byprofessionals to forecast asset values. 
Relation between financial advisory designations and FINRA misconduct FSR201714
No full textRegistered representatives have no general fiduciary duty. CFP, ChFC, and CFA designees have higher ethical duties and education requirements. Registrants’ criminal, regulatory, complaint, and other misconduct history is public. This study examines misconduct disclosures of undesignated versus designated Florida securities salespeople, and finds adverse disclosure materially decreases for designees; it incidentally finds misconduct increases with maleness, dual investment advisor/registered representative status, and life insurance sales licensure. This appears to be the first such study of adverse disclosure association with financial designations, adding to the emerging misconduct and advisors’ ethics literature. These findings offer important policy and consumer choice insight
Undergraduate Learning through Engaged Scholarship and University-Community Partnerships
Get PDFThe impact of university–community partnerships and involvement in engaged scholarship on student learning was examined through in-depth interviews with undergraduate members of a student-led, community-based research organization at a selective mid-Atlantic university. Students reported benefits of participation that included increasing critical thinking skills, changing perspectives, and practicing facilitation and decision-making skills. Students also reported experiences of enhancing learning by developing a deeper understanding and ownership of the project. Findings suggest the need for a deeper look at how students are interacting with communities and how that interaction can lead to enhanced learning outcomes
