Introducing new plants to an area may have both positive and negative effects on the environment, economy and community. To minimise the negative environmental impact of introducing new agricultural species, DPIRD conducts a risk assessment procedure based on widely accepted scientific standards. This report assesses Orange (Citrus x sinensis). Oranges are part of the Citrus genus of small evergreen flowering trees and shrubs in the rue family, Rutaceae. The orange is a hybrid between pomelo (Citrus maxima) and mandarin (Citrus reticulata). Oranges are an important horticultural crop which is widely cultivated around the world. The Western Australian citrus industry primarily supplies the local market with high quality oranges, mandarins, grapefruit, lemons and limes. Growing areas range from Kununurra in the north to Harvey in the south with recent expansion and large businesses near Moora. They are also widely planted in private gardens

This report assesses Caribbean stylo (Stylosanthes hamata). Caribbean stylo (Stylosanthes hamata) is an annual or short-lived perennial herbaceous legume. Individual plants behave as self-regenerating annuals or biennials. In the Northern Territory up to 40% of plants persist from one wet season to the next (Cameron 2010), but this varies depending on the length of the dry season. It has a semi-erect or sometimes prostrate growth habit with many fine stems and is generally 25-40cm in height (up to 75cm), and may develop a low crown under grazing

This report assesses Shrubby stylo (Stylosanthes scabra). Shrubby stylo (Stylosanthes scabra) is a shrubby, perennial legume, erect to suberect, with strong, woody stems, usually densely hairy and viscid, making them sticky under hot, dry conditions. It is a widespread and variable species, originating from South America and the Caribbean (Sousa Costa and Ferreira 1984) with two ecotypes identified reflecting their distribution. It is an erect shrub (0.3 – 2m high) which may be more prostrate under grazing

This report assesses Blueberry (Vaccinium corymbosum). The blueberry (Vaccinium spp.) is an evergreen perennial shrub, growing up to 3m tall. The fruit is a many-seeded blueberry, with white or pale green flesh. Varieties grown in Australia are classified into Southern Highbush, Rabbiteye and Northern Highbush which require varying levels of chilling (i.e. hours below 7°C to induce flowering)

To minimise the negative environmental impact of introducing new agricultural species, DPIRD conducts a risk assessment procedure based on widely accepted scientific standards. This report assesses Woolly pod vetch (Vicia villosa). Woolly pod vetch is a self-regenerating annual type of vetch native to some of Europe and western Asia. It is adapted to a wide range of soil types, especially well-drained soils, but does not tolerate waterlogging. The seed (grain) can cause toxicity and even death of livestock. Woolly pod vetch is a minor pasture species in south-western Australia. In experimental trials in northern Western Australia (WA) the annual legumes and herbs had good feed quality but in general, with low forage yields under irrigation, are unlikely to be economically viable. However, vetch has a larger seed and much faster early growth than the small-seeded annual clovers and serradella. Production in experimental trials to date has been modest, but vetch may have potential as a green or brown manure crop in an annual rotation to improve the soil and to boost organic matter content (Moore et al. 2021)
Status of the Western Australian pastoral rangelands 2021
This report updates the 2020 Rangelands annual report, the 2020 report outlines the condition, trend and risk of vegetation condition decline of pastoral rangelands in WA, based on the information available to September 2020. This 2021 report summaries the findings of the 2020 report and provides updated information on seasonal conditions in 2021 and stocking rates in 2020.
DPIRD produces a full report on the condition, trend and risk status of the WA pastoral rangelands every five years and provides updates on an annual basis. It is expected that the monitoring and assessment protocols used to generate future annual condition reports will continue to be refined with the implementation of the broader pastoral lands reform package, which includes using DPIRD’s risk-based monitoring, assessment and compliance framework, Framework for sustainable pastoral management (DPIRD 2019)
Revision of the lacebug tribe Ceratocaderini (Hemiptera: Tingidae)
The lacebug tribe Ceratocaderini (Tingidae: Cantacaderinae) is reviewed. The tribe comprises five genera from the Southern Hemisphere: Allocader Drake, Australocader Lis, Caledoderus Guilbert, Ceratocader Drake, and Coolacader gen. nov. The tribe is restricted to the Australian and New Caledonian regions. This revision includes the description of a new genus, Coolacader gen. nov. and six new species from three other genera: Australocader porchi sp. nov., Ceratocader piae sp. nov., Ceratocader spiculas sp. nov., Coolacader cupido sp. nov., Coolacader kardia sp. nov. and Coolacader valentine sp. nov. The nymph of Ceratocader is detailed for the first time, and the nymphs of three species of Coolacader gen. nov. are described. Allocader cordatus (Hacker, 1927) is transferred to Coolacader gen. nov., resulting in a new combination Coolacader cordatus (Hacker, 1927) comb. nov., and Allocader nesiotes Drake & Ruhoff, 1962 is transferred to the genus Caledoderus, resulting in a new combination Caledoderus nesiotes (Drake & Ruhoff, 1962) comb. nov.. This work increases the number of species in the tribe from 13 to 19. A revised key to the genera and species of the Ceratocaderini is provided
