    Sheep worms – sustainable summer-autumn worm control

    A summer drenching program for sheep worm control is now recognised as a key cause of drench resistance in Western Australia. However, some small changes can increase the sustainability of pre-emptive control programs. Drenches in summer should always be given to younger, growing sheep (current and previous year’s age groups), whereas adult sheep should be drenched in autumn, or if drenched in summer, some should be left untreated (if drenching at all). Research shows that this reduces the chance of developing drench resistance but still provides effective worm control

    Key Points: 2023 stock assessment: The statewide large pelagic finfish resource (SWLPR) is distributed throughout Western Australia (WA) and includes a range of tropical and temperate pelagic species. Spanish mackerel is an indicator species for the SWLPR. The latest stock assessment provides a ‘health check” on the status of WA Spanish mackerel statewide and in each management region. The 2023 stock assessment shows WA Spanish mackerel remains sustainable with some concerns in the Pilbara region. Current management measures are expected to maintain WA Spanish mackerel at an acceptable level outside the Pilbara region. The next Spanish Mackerel stock assessment is scheduled for 2026

    Pasture Legumes: A new era for pastures in southern Australian farming systems: second generation hardseeded legumes (G2 HSLs)

    This manual is relevant to farming systems in southern Australia in which a crop is grown every second year on a paddock (or more frequently) in rotation with self-regenerating pasture legumes. This manual describes a rich spectrum of new annual legume pasture species, which we have termed ‘second generation hard-seeded legumes’ (G2HSLs). These species have been specifically domesticated, bred and selected for soil and climatic conditions in the large agricultural region of southern Australia. In parallel, high quality strains of nodule bacteria (rhizobia) have been selected to ensure these new legumes can nodulate optimally whenever they are sown or allowed to regenerate

    Methanotrophic bacteria represent an appealing opportunity to convert methane, a potent greenhouse gas, into a highly nutritious animal feed ingredient, single-cell protein (SCP). SCP has a comparable or superior nutritional profile that to most conventional protein sources and can be produced within a lower environmental footprint. The present study investigated the effect of replacing fishmeal (FM) with methanotrophic SCP in diets for barramundi (Lates calcarifer), a carnivorous fish with a high demand for dietary protein and energy. Dietary inclusion levels of 0 %, 10 %, 20 % and 30 % SCP (representing 0, 25, 50 and 75 % FM replacement) were tested, with and without additives. Triplicate groups of juvenile barramundi were fed the diets over 31 days. The inclusion of SCP significantly improved weight gain and feed conversion efficiency (FCE). Dietary SCP inclusion supported good gut health, with decreasing trends of hepatosomatic index, improved plasma biochemistry, and no adverse histopathological changes. Barramundi fed the SCP diets showed an intact intestinal barrier and a significant improvement in villi and lamina propria area when fed the additive supplemented SCP diets. This study demonstrates that this SCP is highly palatable to barramundi (even without dietary additives) and can replace up to 75 % FM with significant improvements in growth and FCE
