Density-dependence inside a marine protected area increases natural mortality and stunts the growth of a spiny lobster
Sustainable fisheries management often requires the modelling of stocks under unfished conditions, when the influence of population densities on animal growth and mortality can be substantial. This can be especially true for species such as spiny rock lobster, which are very habitat specific. Using western rock lobster (Panulirus cygnus) tag-recapture data from adjacent and similar fished and unfished areas, the key life history parameters of natural mortality and growth were examined and compared under different population density scenarios. In an area representative of virgin biomass levels, lobsters exhibited reduced growth rates and a substantially higher rate of natural mortality than in the adjacent, less densely populated fishing grounds. This research highlights the non-stationary nature of growth and natural mortality in this species, a concept which is poorly understood and rarely acknowledged in stock assessment models. Additionally, these results indicate that the perceived benefits of fishery closures, such as spill over and increased reproductive output, may not be as simple as is often assumed, due to the reduced growth and increased mortality of the protected stock relative to the fished population
EPBC 2010/5491: Weaber Plain Development Project Compliance Report - 1st May 2023 to 30th April 2024
The Weaber Plain Development Project (Goomig Project) was approved on 13 September 2011. The approval reference is EPBC 2010/5491 (the Approval).
The Goomig Project comprises irrigated farmland, associated infrastructure, and a buffer area on the Weaber Plain located about 30km north-northeast of Kununurra in Western Australia. Figure 1 shows the location and layout of the Goomig Project and interface with other projects including the Knox Creek Plain Irrigation Development (EPBC 2014/7143), Sorby Hills Silver Lead Zinc mining project, and Ord River Irrigation Area (ORIA) Stage 1 \u27Cave Springs\u27 farms.
The Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development is the Goomig Project proponent. Kimberley Agriculture Investment Pty Ltd (KAI) has tenure of the Goomig Project farmlands, except Lots 15 and 16 which are owned by the Yawoorroong Miriuwung Gajerrong Yirrgeb Noong Dawang Aboriginal Corporation (MG Corporation). MG Corporation has the right under Ord Final Agreement Indigenous Land Use Agreement to acquire the buffer area in freehold.

Cattle industry funding scheme annual report 2022/2023
In June 2010 the Cattle Industry Funding Scheme (IFS) was introduced to address biosecurity threats relevant to the Western Australian (WA) cattle industry. The Scheme was established under the Biosecurity and Agriculture Management Act 2007 to enable cattle producers to identify the pest and disease priorities at a whole-of-industry level and to raise funds for activities to address these priorities.
There are currently three Industry Funding Schemes in operation. In addition to the Cattle IFS, there is a Sheep and Goat IFS and a Grains, Seeds and Hay IFS. The three IFSs operate in a similar manner.
The purpose of the Cattle IFS is to facilitate improvements in the biosecurity, productivity and viability of the WA cattle industry, enabling WA to maintain its international recognition for excellent cattle disease status and product integrity
