The Hidden Convex Optimization Landscape of Two-Layer ReLU Networks

    No full text
ICLR 2024 Blog post trackhttps://iclr-blogposts.github.io/2024/blog/hidden-convex-relu/In this article, we delve into the research paper titled 'The Hidden Convex Optimization Landscape of Regularized Two-Layer ReLU Networks'. We put our focus on the significance of this study and evaluate its relevance in the current landscape of the theory of machine learning. This paper describes how solving a convex problem can directly give the solution to the highly non-convex problem that is optimizing a two-layer ReLU Network. After giving some intuition on the proof through a few examples, we will observe the limits of this model as we might not yet be able to throw away the non-convex problem

Sc/SiC/Al Multilayer Optimization for Li K Spectroscopy

    No full text
International audienceThis paper presents an X-ray reflectivity study of a Sc/SiC/Al periodic multilayer deposited via magnetron sputtering and its possible adaptation to be used as a dispersive element in the crystal spectrometers equipping scanning electron microscopes and electron probe microanalyzers. This multilayer is designed for the spectral range of 45-60 eV. The results reveal a reflectance of 40.8% at 54.1 eV for a near-normal incidence angle of 7 • with a narrow bandwidth of 2.6 eV. The measured and simulated reflectivity curves are very close, suggesting that this system has smooth interfaces and low interdiffusion. Owing to the growing importance of lithium and lack of spectroscopic data, we simulate a new Sc/SiC/Al stack based on the reflectivity data and optimize it to perform spectroscopy in the range near the Li K absorption edge around 55 eV, which is in the spectral range of the Li Kα emission band. This optimization is achieved by tuning the thicknesses of the different layers and the number of periods of the multilayer using an in-house Python script. The optimization results are compared with the performances of other multilayers employed in the same energy range and at a working angle close to 30 • grazing, including Be/Si/Al. This analysis indicates that the Sc/SiC/Al multilayer could be a good candidate for performing spectroscopy in the Li K range

Western diet feeding since adolescence impairs functional hyperemia probed by functional ultrasound imaging at adulthood and middle age: rescue by a balanced ω-3:ω-6 polyunsaturated fatty acids ratio in the diet

Abstract Obesity is a devastating worldwide metabolic disease, with the highest prevalence in children and adolescence. Obesity impacts neuronal function but the fate of functional hyperemia, a vital mechanism making possible cerebral blood supply to active brain areas, is unknown in organisms fed a high caloric Western Diet (WD) since adolescence. We mapped changes in cerebral blood volume (CBV) in the somatosensory cortex in response to whiskers stimulation in adolescent, adult and middle-aged mice fed a WD since adolescence. To this aim, we used non-invasive and high-resolution functional ultrasound imaging (fUS). Functional hyperemia is compromised as early as 3 weeks of WD and remains impaired thereafter. Starting WD in adult mice does not trigger the profound impairment in sensory-evoked CBV observed in young mice, suggesting a cerebrovascular vulnerability to WD during adolescence. A balanced ω-6:ω-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids ratio in WD achieved by docosahexaenoic acid supplementation is efficient to restore glucose homeostasis and functional hyperemia in adults

Line-field confocal optical coherence tomography (LC-OCT) tomography is an optical imaging technique that combines the advantages of confocal microscopy and OCT in terms of spatial resolution, penetration, and image orientation. Invented by Professor Arnaud Dubois (Charles Fabry Laboratory, UMR CNRS, Institute of Optics Graduate School, Université Paris-Saclay), this skin imaging technology is currently commercialized by the French startup DAMAE Medical. The latest commercialized LC-OCT device offers three imaging modes, providing vertical, horizontal, and 3D images of skin at the cellular level, with a penetration depth reaching the superficial dermis. Packaged as a portable probe, the device allows for easy imaging of all the lesions on a patient. Its use by dermatologists enables early detection of malignant tumors and reduces the number of benign biopsies. Our work focuses on developing a next-generation LC-OCT device offering novel applications in the medical field due to its potential compactness, modularity, penetration depth, and acquisition speed. This device is based on tandem interferometry, coupling two interferometers using an optical fiber, one being an imaging interferometer eventually placed in the LC-OCT probe and the other, an externally located compensating interferometer. One advantage of this approach is to move certain elements of the current probe to the compensating interferometer, making future LC-OCT probes even lighter and more compact. In addition, the compensating interferometer can incorporate scanning systems that enable the use of new dynamic focusing mechanisms in the imaging interferometer. In particular, the integration of a focus tunable lens in the imaging interferometer is studied, experimentally validated, and its performance analyzed. The prototype developed has increased the acquisition frequency of vertical section images up to 14.3 Hz. Experimentation also demonstrated the prototype's potential for increasing imaging depth, allowing acquisition and reconstruction of an image up to a depth of 1.3 mm, approximately three times greater than that of the currently commercialized LC-OCT device. Furthermore, we explored a new application of tandem LC-OCT: modular rigid endoscopy. Considering the clinical context of oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma, a prototype rigid tip for LC-OCT imaging of otorhinolaryngological (ORL) tissues has been developed. Despite impacted optical performance, initial in vivo images of the skin and lower lip have validated the feasibility of the approach. Additionally, thanks to tandem LC-OCT, a modular system has been implemented, allowing acquisition of images with and without an endoscopic tip. This demonstrates the versatility of our approach. In conclusion, this doctoral work establishes foundations for the development of future LC-OCT devices based on tandem interferometry. We hope that the benefits brought by tandem LC-OCT will lead to widespread adoption of this imaging technique by healthcare professionals, thereby contributing to advancements in the medical field.

100 µs - 100 Hz coherent beam combining of laser amplifiers for Fourier transform acousto-optic imaging

International audienceHigh-resolution optical imaging of highly scattering medium at large depths (> cm) is demanded by multiple medical applications. Fourier-transform acousto-optic imaging (FT-AOI) is a hybrid technique that couples ultrasonic waves (US) to infrared laser light: photons that cross a US-pulse path are tagged and selectively detected. The penetration depth is currently limited by the optical peak power available from single-frequency diode laser devices. Coherent beam combination, based on the constructive interference of multiple coherent laser beams, can improve the laser source power while preserving its beam quality and spectral purity. We describe a diode-laser-based source for an AOI architecture, based on a parallel master-oscillator / power-amplifier configuration. A narrow-linewidth CW-operated single-frequency laser diode at 828 nm injects two pulse-pumped tapered semiconductor optical amplifiers (TSOAs) with a 100 µs pulse duration and a 100 Hz repetition rate. The amplified beams behind the TSOAs are coherently superposed on a 50:50 beamsplitter. The combined peak power is actively stabilized by correcting the optical path length difference between the two arms with a piezoelectric element. The combined peak power reaches 8.9 W with a combining efficiency > 83 %. The phase drift during the pulse as well as the spatial profile evolution have been carefully characterized and do not affect the combining efficiency. The time-peak power during 1 hour of measurements has a fluctuation of only 1.3 %, which is significantly better than the free-running system. The laser source is implemented in a fully functional integrated FT-AOI architecture based on digital holography coupled with spatio-temporally structured ultrasound-plane waves. An increase of the infrared optical laser power and high-speed-parallel GPU processing allows us to achieve real-time imaging (~Hz). The first images obtained by AOI through a scattering medium (reduced scattering coefficient: 10 cm-1, width: 2 cm) mimicking biological tissues will be presented

Arrays of Rydberg atoms have proven to be a promising platform for the quantum simulation of spin models. This thesis summarizes the work accomplished during my four years of PhD, focusing on the study of the dipolar XY model. The thesis is divided into three parts. In the first part, I describe the working principles of the platform and detail the various upgrades we performed. The second part focuses on the study of the ground state of the XY model using various 2D geometries. The third part presents our studies of the XY quench dynamics. Our quantum simulator is based on trapping and cooling individual Rubidium atoms in an array of optical tweezers. Once trapped, these atoms are excited to the Rydberg state, allowing for strong dipole-dipole interactions between them, thus enabling the implementation of spin models such as the XY model. Recently, we developed a method combining microwave pulses and optical addressing beams to manipulate the state of each spin. This method allows us to perform local rotations of the spins, either to prepare the system in a specific state or to measure cross-basis correlations between the spins.Combining our recent ability to perform local rotations with an adiabatic procedure, we prepared the lowest and highest energy states of the dipolar XY model in 2D square arrays. We characterized these states and demonstrated that they exhibit complex ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic order. In particular, we assessed the role played by the relatively long-range tail of the dipolar interactions, which decay as the cube of the distance. We showed that these interactions modify the properties of the ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic states, leading to long-range order in the former and introducing frustration in the latter. We also continued our exploration of the ground state XY model using highly frustrated geometries such as Kagome arrays. Theoretical works have predicted that the ground state of these systems could be an exotic phase of matter called spin liquids. I present our initial results toward the realization and characterization of these exotic phases. Finally, we investigated quench experiments. We first demonstrated that, as predicted by recent theoretical works, the dipolar XY model can produce spin-squeezed states. These squeezed states are particularly interesting in the context of quantum metrology, as they can improve the sensitivity of measurements. We characterized this squeezing, showing that it is scalable, meaning that its metrological gain (squeezing parameter) increases with the system size. We also proposed different protocols that can be used for metrological applications. By using a quench spectroscopy method, we measured the dispersion relation of the dipolar XY model, revealing a characteristic behaviour predicted by theoretical works. This method is relatively general and can thus be applied to other quantum simulator platforms exhibiting different spin models.
