    ESTABILIZACIÓN POR VERMICOMPOSTEO DE LODOS RESIDUALES APLICADOS EN LA PRODUCTIVIDAD DE ALBAHACA (Ocimum basilicum L.)

    Sewage sludge, a byproduct of wastewater treatment, accumulates a high content of organic matter, heavy metals and other toxic compounds. Due to its accelerated generation, adequate management is necessary for its stabilization and disposal. Vermicomposting is a management alternative that stabilizes residual sludge and allows its addition to the soil, improving structural properties and increasing its fertility. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of vermicompost of sewage sludge and equine manure on the productivity and antioxidant activity of basil plants (Ocimum basilicum L.). Vermicompost was developed in a 30:70 proportion of sewage sludge and equine manure, and the effect on basil was evaluated under different doses of vermicompost (20, 40 and 60 t/ha). The use of vermicompost significantly increased the growth rate, without causing effects on the antioxidant activity and the content of phenolic compounds in basil plants.Los lodos residuales, subproducto del tratamiento de las aguas residuales, acumulan un alto contenido de materia orgánica, metales pesados y otros compuestos tóxicos. Debido a su acelerada generación, es necesario establecer un manejo adecuado para su estabilización y disposición. El vermicomposteo es una alternativa de manejo que estabiliza los lodos residuales y permite su adición al suelo, mejorando las propiedades estructurales e incrementando su fertilidad. El presente estudio tuvo como objetivo evaluar el efecto de vermicomposta de lodo residual y estiércol equino en la productividad y actividad antioxidante de plantas de albahaca (Ocimum basilicum L.). Se elaboró vermicomposta en proporción 30:70 de lodo residual y estiércol equino, y se evaluó el efecto en albahaca con diferentes dosis de vermicomposta (0, 20, 40 y 60 t/ha). El uso de vermicomposta incrementó significativamente la tasa de crecimiento, sin ocasionar efectos en la actividad antioxidante y el contenido de compuestos fenólicos en las plantas de albahaca

    CRECIMIENTO DE Fraxinus uhdei INOCULADO CON DOS CEPAS ECTOMICORRÍZICAS EN DOS SUSTRATOS, UNO CONTAMINADO CON MERCURIO

    Mining is one of the most important industrial activities in many countries; however, environmental damages associated with this activity are severely detrimental. These effects are a consequence, among other things, of heavy metals originated by mineral extraction methods. To reduce the environmental impact of this activity, it is important to develop remediation technologies, including the symbiotic relationships between species that allow high survival and proper development of plants. Therefore, a mesocosm assay was carried out to document the response of Fraxinus uhdei (Wenz.) Lingelsh (ash) inoculated with ectomycorrhizal fungi on two different substrates: a mine-derived substrate from the municipality of Tlalpujahua de Rayón, Michoacán, and an organic one. The study consisted in the inoculation of F. uhdei plants with two fungi strains, Laccaria laccata and Lactarius deliciosus, on two doses: 2.5 × 105 and 1 × 106 spores per plant. Ectomycorrhizal fungi favored the development and survival in both substrates; however, the performance of the plants was higher with the organic substrate. Height, cover, and fresh weight of plants inoculated with Laccaria laccata were the highest (66 cm, 1186 cm2, and 92 g, respectively). Mercury was lower in plants inoculated with Lactarius deliciosus (F(1, 28) = 12.22; P = 0.002) with respect to those inoculated with Laccaria laccata. Our results indicate that inoculation has a positive effect on ash growth both in an organic rich substrate and a substrate produced by mining activities, also the potential use of the tree species for remediation of mining dumps.La minería es una actividad industrial importante en muchos países, a pesar de lo cual los daños que causa son cada día más graves por su impacto ecológico. Lo anterior se debe, entre otras cosas, a los efectos de los residuos de metales pesados originados por los diversos métodos de extracción de minerales. Para reducir el impacto ambiental de esta actividad es importante estudiar relaciones simbióticas entre especies que permitan favorecer la supervivencia y el desarrollo de plantas en sitios degradados por la minería, y, de esta manera, mejorar su estructura al incorporar materia orgánica y reiniciar ciclos biogeoquímicos. Por lo tanto, se llevó a cabo un ensayo en mesocosmos para documentar la respuesta de Fraxinus uhdei (Wenz.) Lingelsh (fresno) inoculado con hongos ectomicorrízicos en dos sustratos diferentes: uno proveniente de un jal del municipio de Tlalpujahua de Rayón, Michoacán, sitio donde se desarrolló actividad minera; y otro orgánico. El experimento consistió en someter a individuos de F. uhdei a inoculación con Laccaria laccata y Lactarius deliciosus con dos dosis: 2.5 × 105 y 1 × 106 de esporas por planta). Los hongos ectomicorrízicos favorecieron el desarrollo y supervivencia de las plantas en ambos sustratos. El desempeño de las plantas fue mayor en el sustrato orgánico, ya que la altura, cobertura y peso fresco de las plantas inoculadas con Laccaria laccata fueron mayores (66 cm, 1186 cm2 y 92 g, respectivamente) respecto a los otros tratamientos. La concentración de mercurio fue menor para las plantas inoculadas con Lactarius deliciosus (F(1, 28) = 12.22; p = 0.002) respecto a las inoculadas con Laccaria laccata. Este estudio indica que la inoculación favorece el desarrollo de plantas de fresno tanto en un sustrato orgánico como en un sustrato derivado de la actividad minera; asimismo, exhibe el potencial de la especie arbórea para la recuperación de sustratos mineros

    EFECTOS DE LAS AGUAS RESIDUALES DE POZOS PETROLEROS SOBRE LOS SUELOS DE SABANAS UBICADAS CERCA DE EL FURRIAL, ESTADO MONAGAS, VENEZUELA

    In terrestrial environments affected by oil operations, oil drilling and sewage fluids (SF) represent an environmental and aesthetic problem of importance. Before watered to the environment, SF rich in suspended solids and with potential contaminants, are transported to a tank treated with a flocculant agent and corrected for pH. The resulting waters are then disposed to the local savannas. It is important to know the effects that those treated SF may have on the surrounding ecosystems. This contribution aims to analyze the levels of soluble salts and heavy metals in the soils adjacent to oil wells located in the eastern part of the Venezuelan savannas after irrigation with treated SF. The treated SF watered to the environment have a liming effect on the natural acidity of soils. In general, no high levels of heavy metals (Fe, Mn, Cu and Zn) were found nor soluble aluminum in treated soils, which is due to the rise in pH after treatment. The soils treated with effluents generally had a higher sodium concentration. However, there is no potential environmental risk in the amounts of soluble sodium released to the sandy ultisols since the good internal drainage of these and the proper precipitation of the area allow the soon eviction of salts without danger of salinization. Nevertheless, strict monitoring is recommended, in particular of the pH levels of wastewater before being irrigated to the surrounding savannas.En los ambientes terrestres afectados por la actividad petrolera los fluidos de perforación y las aguas residuales (AR) generados en estas operaciones representan un problema ambiental y estético de importancia. Las AR, ricas en sólidos en suspensión, sales solubles y con potenciales contaminantes, son transportadas a una fosa donde se tratan con un agente floculante y se corrige su pH. Posteriormente, las aguas resultantes son regadas al ambiente. Es importante conocer los efectos de esas AR sobre los ecosistemas terrestres circunvecinos. El objetivo de este trabajo es analizar los niveles de sales solubles y metales pesados en los suelos de sabanas adyacentes a pozos petroleros ubicados en el oriente de Venezuela después del riego con AR. Cuando son regadas al ambiente, las AR tratadas tienen un efecto encalante sobre la acidez natural de esos suelos. En ninguno de los casos estudiados se encontraron niveles altos de metales pesados (Fe, Mn, Cu y Zn) y aluminio soluble en los suelos, ya que fueron corregidos por el incremento de pH. En general, los suelos tratados con los efluentes presentaron mayor concentración de sodio; sin embargo, no existe riesgo ambiental potencial en las cantidades de sodio soluble liberados a los ultisoles arenosos, ya que el buen drenaje interno de éstos y la adecuada precipitación de la zona permiten el pronto desalojo de sales sin peligro de salinización. No obstante, se recomienda una estricta vigilancia, en particular de los niveles de pH de las aguas residuales antes de ser regadas a las sabanas circunvecinas

    In the Nevado de Toluca, Mexico the indiscriminate use of pesticides for food production (principally potato) has generated negative impacts on the physical and chemical properties of soil, which represents an imminent risk to environmental and human health. The objective of this study was to evaluate the total concentration and geoavailability fraction of the main potentially toxic elements (As, Pb and Cd) from the most used pesticides in agricultural soils of the Nevado de Toluca. The determination of heavy metals (Pb and Cd) was carried out by atomic emission spectroscopy with inductive coupling and in the case of the As, by atomic absorption spectroscopy with hydride generation. The results revealed a considerable total concentration of potentially toxic elements in the area whose geoavailabilityis evident. Therefore, there is evidence of global in the short term by the abuse of pesticides in this important region of the Nevado of Toluca, Mexico.En el Nevado de Toluca, México, el uso indiscriminado de plaguicidas para la producción de alimentos (principalmente papa) ha generado impactos negativos en las propiedades físicas y químicas del suelo, lo que representa un riesgo inminente para la salud ambiental y humana. El objetivo del presente estudio fue evaluar la concentración total y la fracción geodisponible de los principales elementos potencialmente tóxicos (As, Pb y Cd) provenientes de los plaguicidas más utilizados en suelos agrícolas del Nevado de Toluca. La determinación de metales pesados (Pb y Cd) se realizó mediante espectroscopia de emisión atómica por plasma de acoplamiento inductivo y para As, mediante espectroscopia de absorción atómica por generación de hidruros. Los resultados mostraron una concentración total considerable de elementos potencialmente tóxicos en la zona, así como una ostensible geodisponibilidad. Por tanto, hay evidencia de riesgo en el corto plazo por el abuso de plaguicidas en esta importante región del Nevado de Toluca, México

    THE TRANSNATIONAL TEXTILE COMPANIES RELATIONSHIP WITH ENVIRONMENT: A DELPHI ANALYSIS APPROACH

    The main purpose of this article is to analyze from a quantitative perspective, the textile transnational corporations (TNC) relationship with environment through a Delphi analysis. Our analysis has been applied with two panels composed of 55 experts with two multidisciplinary questionnaires with open questions, regarding the degree of affinity (test) to the proposals made. The presentation of the results obtained shows the lack of ethics on the part of companies within their relation with the environment. The incessant appropriation of natural resources but not of their impacts and sequels as well as the lack of diligence when pursuing environmental crimes bring out the delicate situation between the ETN and everything that stands in the way of their interests. Hence, it is necessary to know the risks and relationship of corporate social responsibility from a scientific methodology in order to reflect and modify future behaviors by production companies when interacting with the natural environment and assume real responsibilities through the proposal of action guides presented here.The main purpose of this article is to analyze from a quantitative perspective, the textile transnational corporations (TNC) relationship with environment through a Delphi analysis.     BIOSORPTION OF RHODAMINE B FROM AQUEOUS SOLUTION USING Araucaria angustifolia STERILE BRACTS

    This study evaluated the removal of Rhodamine B dye by biosorption using Araucaria angustifolia sterile bracts. It also aimed to evaluate the treatment of a synthetic wastewater holding that dye. The biosorbent was characterized by infrared spectroscopy and thermogravimetric analysis. Equilibrium biosorption studies were made with the exposure of biosorbent to aqueous solutions of rhodamine B at different pH and initial concentrations. Removal tests for wastewater containing dye were performed with the bracts, and efficacy was assessed by the percentage of uptake of dye and bioassays. The infrared characterization showed peaks that are features to groups on carbohydrates and lignin, the major components in bract composition. The biosorption equilibrium studies presented acid media as the best condition for dye removal. The rate-controlling step of the biosorption was found to be governed by chemical processes (second order kinetics) and shown to be a heterogeneous biosorption based on the fit to the Freundlich equation model. The treatment for synthetic wastewater (125 mg/L) reduced the mass of rhodamine B by 96 % and caused a decrease of toxic effects. The results show that sterile bracts can be considered as a low-cost alternative biosorbent to be applied on the removal of water pollutants and treatment of potentially toxic effluents.This study evaluated the removal of Rhodamine B dye by biosorption using Araucaria angustifolia sterile bracts.     CORRELACIÓN PAN-O3 EN EL SUROESTE DE LA CIUDAD DE MÉXICO

    Peroxyacetyl nitrate (PAN) and NO2 (true) were measured during two short campaigns in June and October, 2017 with a gas chromatography-luminol detection method in southwest Mexico City. The maximum and total hourly mixing ratio measured averages of PAN were 5.2 and 1.3 ppbv in June and 3.3 and 0.6 ppbv in October, respectively, being these values slightly lower than those reported in 2003 suggesting that PAN precursor levels have only partially decreased during the last 15 years. PAN hourly averages of the two campaigns were correlated with O3, NO2 (by chemiluminescence), solar radiation, temperature, and wind speed measured in the same monitoring site in order to obtain a combined empirical model (CEM) for the diagnosis of PAN concentrations for other periods of the year. The resulting CEM was integrated with several multiple linear correlations which are applied depending on the period of the day and the ambient temperature. The correlation between both, the simulated and measured PAN resulted in a coefficient R2 = 0.87. The CEM was applied to records of the above mentioned variables measured at the Centro de Ciencias de la Atmósfera monitoring station at Ciudad Universitaria for the 2017 ozone season. A positive temperature dependent correlation was obtained between PAN and ozone, but the correlation was weaker as ambient temperature exceeded the 20 ºC. Se midieron los contaminantes nitrato de peroxiacetilo (PAN) y dióxico de nitrógeno (NO2, verdadero) durante dos campañas cortas de monitoreo en junio y octubre de 2017 con un método por cromatografía de gases y detección por luminol al suroeste de la Ciudad de México. Los promedios horarios máximo y total de la razón de mezcla medida del PAN de cada campaña fueron de 5.2 y 1.3 ppbv en junio y de 3.3 y 0.6 ppbv en octubre, respectivamente, ligeramente menores a los promedios reportados en 2003. Esto sugiere que la emisión de precursores de este contaminante: acetaldehído y butenos, han disminuido sólo parcialmente en los últimos 15 años. Los promedios horarios del PAN fueron correlacionados con O3 y NO2 (medido por quimioluminiscencia), radiación solar, temperatura, e intensidad del viento registrados en el mismo sitio para obtener un modelo empírico combinado (MEC) para el diagnóstico aproximado de las concentraciones del PAN para otros periodos del año. El MEC resultante se integró con varias correlaciones lineales múltiples que se aplican dependiendo del periodo del día y la temperatura. La correlación entre el PAN simulado y el medido para las dos campañas resultó en un coeficiente R2 = 0.87. Se aplicó el MEC a registros de las variables antes mencionadas de la estación de monitoreo del Centro de Ciencias de la Atmósfera en la Ciudad Universitaria para la temporada de ozono de 2017. Se observó una correlación positiva del PAN con el O3 dependiente de la temperatura, que fue cada vez más débil conforme la temperatura excedió los 20 ºC

    MERCURIO EN UN ARROYO ALTOANDINO CON ALTO IMPACTO POR MINERÍA AURÍFERA ARTESANAL (LA RINCONADA, PUNO, PERÚ)

    La Rinconada, in the high Andes at southern Peru, is a town heavily engaged in artisanal gold mining, where tailings and waste are dumped into streams of river headwaters. For this reason, mercury was evaluated in surface water and sediments of the Lunar de Oro stream, in its origins at the Ananea glacier. Four points were sampled in the months of December 2014, and January and March 2015. In both segments, mercury was determined by atomic fluorescence spectrophotometry (EPA 245.2), and pH, dissolved oxygen, electrical conductivity, total dissolved solids and temperature were determined by multiparameter and in laboratory. In the four sampling points, mercury in water presented similar levels, with values between < 0.00005 and 0.00043 mg/L (n = 12), although in March, related to a lower flow, higher levels were determined (0.00034 ± 0.000032 mg/L), surpassing the Peruvian standards and the Canadian Environmental Quality Guidelines (CEQG); pH recorded an average of 3.44 ± 0.12 and oxygen 2.84 ± 0.23 mg/L, values that confirmed its low quality. Sediments showed values between 9 and 373 mg/kg, with no significant differences between zones and months, exceeding NOAA and CEQG limits for 100 % of the samples. Pollution rates confirmed that the site is extremely contaminated by mercury, corroborating its high risk for public health and the ecosystems involved.La Rinconada, en los altos Andes al sur del Perú, es una localidad dedicada fuertemente a la minería aurífera artesanal, donde relaves y desechos se vierten en arroyos de cabeceras de cuenca. Por ello se evaluó el mercurio en agua superficial y sedimentos del arroyo Lunar de Oro, en sus nacientes en el nevado Ananea. Se muestrearon cuatro puntos en los meses de diciembre de 2014, y enero y marzo de 2015, y se determinó el mercurio en ambos compartimentos por el método de espectrofotometría de fluorescencia atómica (EPA 245.2), evaluándose adicionalmente pH, oxígeno disuelto, conductividad eléctrica, sólidos disueltos totales y temperatura mediante multiparámetro y en laboratorio. En los cuatro puntos de muestreo, el mercurio en agua presentó niveles similares, variando de < 0.00005 a 0.00043 mg/L (n = 12). Según el mes, marzo presentó mayores concentraciones (0.00034 ± 0.000032 mg/L), las cuales se relacionan con el menor caudal, superando las normas peruanas y los estándares canadienses de calidad ambiental (CEQG, por sus siglas en inglés); el pH registró un promedio general de 3.44 ± 0.12 y el oxígeno disuelto 2.84 ± 0.23 mg/L, valores que confirman su baja calidad. Los sedimentos tuvieron concentraciones de mercurio entre 9 y 373 mg/kg, sin diferencias significativas entre zonas y meses. El 100 % de las muestras superaron los límites de la NOAA (EUA) y de los CEQG. Los índices de acumulación ratificaron que el lugar se encuentra extremadamente contaminado por mercurio, y representa un alto riesgo para la salud pública y los ecosistemas involucrados

    CONCENTRATION AND DISTRIBUTION OF HEAVY METALS IN ASH EMITTED BY THE SUGAR FACTORY LA GLORIA, VERACRUZ, MEXICO

    Agricultural activities are one of the main sources of environmental pollution. One such source is sugarcane burning and the related agroindustrial processes carried out by sugar mills that emit a great volume of particulate matter containing heavy metals such as cadmium (Cd), copper (Cu), lead (Pb) and zinc (Zn). These heavy metals result in serious pollution problems and harm to public health. Therefore, the aim of this study was to determine the concentrations and spatial distribution of the heavy metals Cd, Cu, Pb and Zn present in the particulate matter emitted by La Gloria sugar mill and by sugarcane burning in regional agroecosystems, as a function of the distance at which such material was deposited during the emission process. The research was carried out in the town of La Gloria, Veracruz where the sugar mill is located. Two study areas were established: the first, zone A, was located 50 to 400 m away from the mill, and the second, zone B, 401 to 900 m away. A total of 51 ash sampling sites were randomly selected, 17 in zone A and 34 in zone B. The samples collected within the town were representative of the area with the highest incidence of particulate matter. An analysis of means showed that the concentrations of Cd, Cu and Pb were higher in zone A than in zone B (100.6179 > 66.3614 µg/g; 92.2825 > 47.2526 µg/g; 876 8559 > 701.3888 µg/g, espectively). However, in zone B the concentration of Zn was higher than in A (28.5941 > 28.8798 µg/g).     ACTIVIDAD ELECTROQUÍMICA DE LA CEPA BACTERIANA CrLIM26 ACOPLADA A LA REDUCCIÓN DE Cr(VI)

    The microbial fuel cells (MFC) are an emerging technology that takes advantage from organic compounds degradation and different substrates to generate energy. Among these substrates is Cr(VI), a heavy metal classified as toxic, mutagen and carcinogenic to living organisms. Our purpose was to determine the bioelectrochemical activity, associated with bioremediation of Cr(VI) with the bacterial strain CrLIM26, for which Cr(VI) tolerance tests were carried out, by minimum inhibitory concentration, reduction assays for Cr(VI), phylogeny´s identification of the bacterial strain and determination of its capacity to produce energy during the removal of Cr(VI) in MFC. The strain was identified as Exiguobacterium acetylicum, short bacillus, Gram positive, with a160 mg of Cr(VI)/L tolerance, 100 % metal removal in 11 h, at a concentration of10 mg of Cr(VI)/L, with bioelectrochemical activity producing a power densityof 107.34 and 89.74 μW/m2 in LB medium with and without Cr(VI) respectively. The above allows to conclude that the strain CrLIM26 of E. acetylicum can be used for treatment contaminated environments with Cr(VI) in systems associated to the generation of alternative energies in MFCs.Las celdas de combustible microbianas (CCM) son una tecnología emergente que aprovecha la degradación de compuestos orgánicos y diferentes sustratos para generar energía, entre los cuales se encuentra el Cr(VI), metal pesado clasificado como tóxico, mutagénico y cancerígeno para los organismos vivos. El propósito de este trabajo fue determinar la actividad electrogénica acoplada a la biorremediación de Cr(VI) con la cepa bacteriana CrLIM26, para lo cual se realizaron ensayos de tolerancia al Cr(VI), por concentración mínima inhibitoria, ensayos de reducción del Cr(VI), identificación filogenética de la cepa bacteriana y se determinó su capacidad de producir energía durante la remoción del Cr(VI) en CCM. La cepa se identificó como Exiguobacterium acetylicum, bacilo corto, Gram positivo, con una tolerancia de 160 mg de Cr(VI) /L, con remoción del 100 % del metal en 11 h, a una concentración de 10 mg de Cr(VI)/L; presentó actividad electrogénica al producir una densidad de potencia de 107.34 y 89.74 µW/m2 en medio LB con y sin Cr(VI) respectivamente. Lo anterior permite concluir que la cepa CrLIM26 de E. acetylicum puede ser utilizada para el tratamiento de ambientes contaminados con Cr(VI) en sistemas acoplados a la generación de energías alternativas en CCM simples
