The medium cities of southern Chile suffer critical episodes every winter due to emission of large quantities of PM2.5 from wood-burning stoves and wood cookstoves. Policy makers have implemented atmospheric decontamination plans, which include awareness campaigns to promote self-protective behaviors such as wearing face masks or exercising only within walls. The objective of this study was to analyze the role of psychosocial factors in the adoption of self-protective behaviors against air pollution in residents of Temuco and Padre Las Casas. A non-experimental, cross-sectional and correlational-scope study was carried out, based on a non-probabilistic sample of 489 participants. Descriptive-comparative and correlation tests were performed, as well as ordinal logistic regression models. The results show that women, participants with previous respiratory illnesses, and those with higher education are more likely to protect themselves against pollution. These participants tend to be more aware of poor air quality and better perceive the severity of its effects. Although this study shows that psychosocial variables are relevant to understanding adherence to self-protective behaviors, each of these behaviors must be understood differently, since the determining factors vary in each of them.
Antagonism of Bacillus licheniformis M2–7 against phytopathogen fungi of Mangifera indica L.
The biological control using organisms that inhibit growth or the appearance of pests or diseases has proven to be a successful alternative for mango disease control. In this work, in vitro analyses were carried out with Bacillus licheniformis M2–7 and B. licheniformis LYA12 strain derived from M2–7 against the phytopathogenic fungi Aspergillus oryzae, Colletotrichum sp., and Aspergillus niger. Besides, the effect of bacteria on the micellar structure of phytopathogenic fungi was observed and evaluated through real-time PCR, the expression of two main metacaspases (casA and casB) that triggers the process of programmed cell death in fungi. The results obtained showed that both bacterial species inhibited by 45, 40, and 35 % the fungal growth of Aspergillus oryzae , Colletotrichum sp., and Aspergillus niger, respectively. The bacteria presence affected the mycelial appearance of the fungi because they presented fragmentation of the hyphae with intracellular inclusion bodies, swellings, malformations and scarce growth of the hyphae. The gene expression results conclude that the LYA12 and M2-7 strains against A. oryzae and A. niger have a fungicidal effect; therefore, the bacterial strains could be used in disease control in mango. The biological control using organisms that inhibit growth or the appearance of pests or diseases has proven to be a successful alternative for mango disease control.
Emerging pollutants of pharmaceutical origin have a continuous entry into the aquatic environment in very low concentrations and can alter the organism of living beings. The main characteristics of these pollutants are their high stability and persistence in water, which can generate bioaccumulation, endocrine disruption, and bacterial resistance. These pollutants are excreted without metabolizing after their application, reaching wastewater and subsequently surface water because the methods used to eliminate them (biological treatments) are not efficient. A photocatalytic system is a great alternative to degrade emerging pollutants of pharmaceutical origin. Therefore, the implementation of a photocatalytic solar cell turns out to be a low-cost, efficient, and environmentally friendly solution. Acetylsalicylic acid, trimethoprim, and ranitidine were selected to simulate wastewater with emerging pollutants at a concentration of 1 g/L. They were subjected to a solar cell to carry out their degradation by photocatalysis, using TiO2 as a photocatalyst. The evaluation was carried out by analytical methods: UV-Vis spectrophotometry, chemical oxygen demand (COD) and total organic carbon (TOC). Acetylsalicylic acid was the drug that degraded the most, decreasing its COD from 152.6 to 10.4 mg/L at the end of treatment, while TOC started at 118.6 mg/L and ended at 1.4 mg/L. Trimethoprim turned out to be the drug with the least decrease in COD and TOC. Finally, it can be concluded that the coupling of solar energy to the photocatalysis process was satisfactory,, obtaining a technology of low cost and less impact.
The Catamayo (in Ecuador) - Chira (in Peru) transboundary basin in its lower part has the Poechos multipurpose reservoir, which is essential for the economic and productive development of northern Peru. However, due to inadequate soil management in the basin, the reservoir is accumulating a high sediment load. The decision made by the reservoir administration was to raise its elevation, without considering working alongside farmers in the basin, proposing alternatives for sustainable soil management. In this context, the objective of this study was to estimate the sediment export by simulation soil management and conservation practices, using the sediment delivery ratio module (SDR) in the InVEST 3.9.0 software, to suggest adequate practices for the conditions of the soil watershed. Sediment export based on land use change over the last 30 years was also modeled. This study contributes as an instrument for the integrated water resources management (IWRM), which allows a balance between the users of the water resources (beneficiaries) and suppliers, who have their soils degraded. Thus, IWRM can go from being a simple intention, to a key tool to promote policies and international agreements, toward the generation of clean and abundant water for both countries. At the same time, it favors the management and conservation of the soil of the basin and its related resources, to maximize economic and social welfare in an equitable manner for both countries.
River engineering has provided the theoretical, empirical and practical elements to intervene in fluvial systems for the use of water resources or to reduce risk of damage to population and infrastructure. Hydraulic engineers specialized in river engineering have traditionally undertaken such interventions by means of so-called “hard engineering” solutions, due to the materials and constructive methods used, but also due to the underlying way of thinking, which favours intervention on apparent effects rather than on the real causes. Recent decades have seen a shift in the perception and the relation of our societies with the environment, promoting as fundamental values the good condition of aquatic ecosystems and a sustainable management of water resources. This paradigm shift implies a profound revision of the role of river engineers in planning, intervening and managing fluvial landscapes, assuming a change of direction in the approach to the interventions, as well as the need of a narrow collaboration with experts from different disciplines. In this work we discuss the new role of river engineers and the challenges they have to face in Latin-American societies. In particular, we emphasize the environmental and social singularity of the region, which requires new technical competences from river engineers, but also environmental and social commitment, as well as an active involvement as liaison between experts, society and authorities.
The collaboration in the action plan for a blue sky of Chinese municipal government based on text data mining and social network analysis
Constructing a collaborative mechanism through the self-organizing movement within the system is the main development direction of China’s future mechanism of innovation. The reform of the administrative system can give full play to the role of the collaborative mechanism. This article comprehensively uses data mining and social network analysis to analyze the collaboration of China’s municipal departments in air pollution control. Text data includes 101 municipal policies. The paper reveals the collaboration problems in air pollution control and proposes suggestions from the perspective of the departmental responsibility. First, from the perspective of inter-departmental collaboration, the lack of responsibility for Department of Finance, Department of Housing and Urban-rural Development, Department of Ecology and Environment, Department of Industry and Information Technology, Department of Transport, Department of Public Security, and Department of Development and Reform is the most obvious, indicating that the comprehensive management departments should be strengthened to assume responsibilities, while the specialized management departments should also be strengthened. Second, from the perspective of intra-departmental responsibility collaboration, the most obvious situation is that the collaborations of responsible for promoting new-energy vehicles, air pollution control in autumn and winter, increasing tax-free incentive policy support, development of inter-modality, adjusting regional industrial layout, optimizing freight structure, and increasing economic policy support are insufficient. The number of departments responsible for supervision should be increased, as well as the number of departments responsible for guidance.Constructing a collaborative mechanism through the self-organizing movement within the system is the main development direction of China’s future mechanism of innovation. Study on equivalent fracture toughness of recycled steel fiber-reinforced concrete based on digital image correlation technology
Recycled steel fiber-reinforced concrete is a new hybrid high performance environmental protection composite material, which can be widely used in the construction industry and provide a new research direction for national green and sustainable development. In this study, three-point bending beams with a prefabricated incision were used to evaluate the fracture performance of plain concrete, steel fiber-reinforced concrete and recycled steel fiber-reinforced concrete with different fiber volume contents, fiber length-diameter ratios and relative incision depths based on digital image correlation technology. The results show that recycled steel fibers can improve the crack resistance of concrete beams better than ordinary steel fibers; The crack resistance of specimens increases with the increases of volume ratio of recycled steel fibers, and when the fiber content is from 0.0% to 1.0%, the increased amplitude of the crack resistance of specimens increases gradually, when the fiber content is from 0.5% to 1.0%, the increased amplitude of the crack resistance of specimens reaches the maximum, and when the fiber content is from 1.0% to 1.5%, the increased amplitude of the crack resistance of specimens decreases; The crack resistance of specimens increases with the increases of length-diameter ratio of recycled steel fibers, and when the fiber length-diameter ratio is from 30 to 50, the crack resistance of specimens increases relatively large, when the fiber length-diameter ratio is from 50 to 70, the crack resistance of specimens increases relatively small; The crack resistance of specimens decreases with the increases of relative incision depth of specimens, and when the relative incision depth is from 0.2 to 0.3, the crack resistance of specimens decreases relatively large, when the relative incision depth is from 0.3 to 0.4, the crack resistance of specimens decreases relatively small; The equivalent fracture toughness of concrete beams does not change with the changes in the relative incision depth. The simulated results correlated well with the experimental results, except some macroscopic phenomena during the cracking process. This study can provide references for the research of fracture behavior of steel fiber-reinforced concrete materials and the recycling of steel wire from waste tires.Recycled steel fiber-reinforced concrete is a new hybrid high performance environmental protection composite material, which can be widely used in the construction industry and provide a new research direction for national green and sustainable development. Analysis of contributing factors to dissolved oxygen depletion in the anoxic zone and their respective contributions based on stratified hypolimnetic oxygen depletion
Hypolimnetic anoxia is often observed in large reservoirs during thermal stratification. In the hypolimnion layer, dissolved oxygen (DO) is continuously consumed by biological and chemical reactions, resulting in a stable anoxic zone at the bottom of the reservoir. The areal hypolimnetic oxygen depletion (AHOD) has been a widely used indicator for hypolimnetic DO depletion, but this indicator could not reflect the DO depletion process at the bottom of deep reservoirs with deposits of pollutant sediments. With Daheiting Reservoir as the study case, the concept of stratified areal hypolimnetic oxygen depletion (S-AHOD) was proposed, and an S-AHOD calculation model was built, which could accurately describe the DO depletion process in the anoxic zone at the bottom of Daheiting Reservoir, identify the DO depletion rate at different water depths in the anoxic zone and quantify the contribution of sediment oxygen demand to the overall oxygen depletion. It was found that sediment oxygen demand contributed considerably (41.4%) to the overall hypolimnetic DO depletion in the reservoir, DO depletion rate varied considerably at different water depths, which increased from the surface to the bottom of the reservoir and reached the maximum at the bottom layer. Finally, based on results of existing works, an AHOD calculation equation applicable to lakes and reservoirs with considerable deposits of heavily pollutant sediments was put forward. Comparison of methodolgies of soil quality indices (SQI) for sodic soil
Soil degradation and the use of urban biosolid wastes to soil restoration have an economic, social-environmental and health impact. Therefore, there is interest worldwide in the use and comparison of methodologies to establish soil quality indexes (SQIs) based on physical, chemical, and biological indicators of soils. Considering that more than 60% of the territory in the Bajío region of Mexico in the State of Guanajuato is affected by some type of soil degradation, three methodologies for the establishment of SQIs—additive, weighted and unified weighted indexes—were compared in this study to evaluate the short-term effects—30 days—of the addition of biosolids as soil improvers. The methodologies were applied in experiments on carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) mineralization dynamics in a sodic agricultural soil. The ammonium indicator (N-NH4+) was established as the one that is most related to the quality of the soil. The additive and unified weighted indexes differentiated the level of soil quality with respect to time and treatment. The developed SQIs can be used for short-term assessment of the quality of agricultural soils under amendment addition treatments with biosolids or similar organic products.Soil degradation and the use of urban biosolid wastes to soil restoration have an economic, social-environmental and health impact. Environmental performance of urban integration regions of Chengdu, Deyang, Meishan and Ziyang, based on DPSIR model
The paper focuses on the quantitative assessment of the environmental performance of the Urban Integration region of Chengdu, Deyang, Meishan, and Ziyang (Chengdemeizi Urban Integration) in 2015-2019, including the overall level, changing trends of the environmental performance, and the key factors that influence the environmental performance. The theme framework and driver-force-pressure-state-impact-response (DPSIR) model is used to build the evaluation indicator system, the target approximation method and the combination weighting method are adopted to calculate the environmental performance index (EPI). In addition, the Pearson correlation analysis with GDP is performed to analyze the relationship between environmental performance and the economic development level of the Urban Integration region. The results indicated that regional average scores of comprehensive environmental performances show an obvious improvement trend and had significantly positive correlation with economic level from 2015 to 2019. For the EPIs of 2nd indicators, environmental quality is the main restrictive indicator. For the EPIs of 3rd indicators, air quality, noise, and environmental management are the main restrictive indicators. Each city has different performance, and the order of EPI scores of the four cities from largest to smallest is Chengdu > Deyang > Ziyang > Meishan. Therefore, the four cities need to continuously improve their respective shortcoming environmental performance indicators and promote the balanced improvement of indicators at all levels.
