Bioaccumulation of heavy metals in cucumber plants inoculated with Trichoderma strains (Hypocreaceae) in the Mezquital Valley, Hidalgo, Mexico
In the Mezquital Valley, Hidalgo, Mexico, wastewater is often used in agricultural systems which have caused negative environmental effects, such as edaphic heavy metal pollution. Consequently, plants in the area begin to absorb heavy metals. Therefore, the objective of this experiment was to evaluate the effects of Trichoderma harzianum and Trichoderma viride strains on bioaccumulation of Pb, Cd and Cr in inoculated cucumber plants (Cucumis sativus). The soil used in this study contains Pb, Cd and Cr (34.63, 0.24, and 32.32 mg/kg, respectively). In Trichoderma root colonization, the highest measurement was Trichoderma harzianum (100 %). The cucumber plants translocated Pb, Cr, and Cd to their fruits and leaves. Concentrations of Pb and Cd were higher in the basal leaves of the cucumber plant, whereas Cr was more concentrated in the cucumber fruits. Pb was not found in the cucumber skin. For Cd concentration in the skin, the T. harzianum and T. viride treatments at 2.34 × 106 and 2.34 × 106 CFU/mL, respectively, resulted in a 20.2 % reduction of this metal. Trichoderma, with 2.34 × 106 CFU/mL, had the lowest concentration of Cr in the pulp (5.572 mg/kg). No differences were found in metal concentrations in the skin or leaves. In the Mezquital Valley, Hidalgo, Mexico, wastewater is often used in agricultural systems which have caused negative environmental effects, such as edaphic heavy metal pollution.
Gallium (Ga), indium (In) and thallium (Tl) are three metals belonging to the group 13 (IIIA) of the periodic table of chemical elements and due to their many industrial, technological, agricultural, and medical applications, their presence has been increased in the environment and ecosystems. However, none of them have any recognized biological functions. The present review was carried out with the purpose of compiling the available information on contamination, human exposure, toxicokinetic and genotoxicity associated with Ga, In and Tl in their +3 oxidation state (in mammalian). Ga3+, In3+ and Tl3+ have particular properties that influence their mechanism of action, such as chemical composition, solubility and particle size; which in turn influence their associated toxicity. Several of their effects are associated with the exposure route, their absorption and entry into the cell, the ability to unbalance oxidant-antioxidant homeostasis, alter molecular functions and generate cell toxicity, as well as the ability to generate damage to biomolecules, including DNA. In general, the studies carried out on Ga3+, In3+ and Tl3+ show that they can induce several adverse effects that can have an impact on human health.
One of the most important problems related to plastic waste is the production of microplastics (MPs), whose accumulation in different taxa has been recorded. It was recently found through field sampling that lichens are able to accumulate MPs. The present work aims to experimentally study the accumulation and deposition of MPs in three lichen species of the genera Usnea, Ramalina and Punctelia. We measured the weight, water uptake and fractal dimension of each thallus. Under laboratory conditions, we exposed 12 thalli of each species to three different doses of MPs in aqueous suspension (3, 6, and ≤12 MP/mL) for one week. The accumulated and deposited MPs were extracted and counted. Accumulation was negligible. We modelled deposition with general linear models. The fractal dimension variable was the only one significantly related to deposited MPs.
Nano-onions based on chitosan: Production and characterization
This work presents the morphology and characterization of chitosan nanoparticles crosslinked with lecithin in the form of nano-onions obtained by an easy, economical, and possibly scalable method from a polymeric precursor known as chitosan. The creation of new products by using shrimp waste is a fundamental factor in avoiding water pollution. These materials have a positive impact as they add value to waste, and they provide the opportunity to decrease pollution. Chitosan nano-onions were synthesized by an environmentally friendly, easy, and inexpensive method using chitosan as a natural source. Chitosan nano-onions (CSNO) were characterized by using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), dynamic light scattering (DLS) and specific surface area (SSA). The nano-onions characterization obtained by FTIR shows the presence of carbonyl groups at a wavenumber of 1752.12 cm–1, while the phosphate groups attributed to lecithin are observed at 1156.88 cm–1. XRD analysis confirmed an amorphous structure, while SEM images presented a globular morphology with concave surfaces. TEM analysis showed that the nano-onions are congregated in a unique structure that includes nanotubes. The CSNO average diameter by DLS was 442.5 nm with an octagonal arrangement, and a polydispersity index (PDI) of 0.532 and 31.9 mV. The average size of CSNO, the PDI, and the value of zeta potential were indicators of a stable dispersion with a specific superficial area measured by the Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) method of 1.4 m2 g–1. The results of the chitosan-lecithin nano-onions characterization indicate changes in the surface of the material with a larger total surface area and pore structure, compared to that of pure chitosan. According to the results of the CHNO characterization, they could be used as adsorbents for contaminants and they also have a potential application in the biomedical area, mainly as drug encapsulation material. This work presents the morphology and characterization of chitosan nanoparticles crosslinked with lecithin in the form of nano-onions obtained by an easy, economical, and possibly scalable method from a polymeric precursor known as chitosan. Occurrence of pesticide residues in fig crops (Ficus carica L.), in Morelos, Mexico
The state of Morelos is the main producer of figs in the Mexican Republic, contributing 50% of the national production. Despite the fact that the official regulations in Mexico only allow the use of some pesticides on figs, it is common to find residues of prohibited substances. This work aims to assess the occurrence of pesticide residues in the fig cultivation from 15 different parcels located in Morelos in order to determine their degree of dissipation and the resultant health risk. The fig samples were analyzed using the QuEChERS multi-residue extraction, followed by gas chromatography triple quadrupole mass spectrometer, and ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometer. Nine pesticides were detected in the sampled crops, of which five were above the maximum allowed residue levels. The pesticides with the highest concentrations were thiophanate-methyl (0.733 mg/kg), chlorothalonil (0.445 mg/kg), propamocarb (0.395 mg/kg), and carbendazim (0.313 mg/kg). All Risk Health Index values were less than 1, indicating no risk to human health. However, it is noteworthy that dietary pesticide intakes estimated in this study considered only exposures from fig fruit and did not include other fruits, vegetables, grains, dairy, fish, or meat, among others. These findings suggest the need for a continuous monitoring program for pesticide residues in cultivated vegetables in Morelos. The state of Morelos is the main producer of figs in the Mexican Republic, contributing 50% of the national production.
This study estimated the protective capacity and natural intrinsic vulnerability of the Texcoco aquifer combining the Aquifer Vulnerability Index method (AVI) and the Dar Zarrouk geoelectric parameter (unitary longitudinal conductance, S). Lacustrine deposits, alluvial materials, and stratified volcanic deposits form the Texcoco aquifer. It is located in the east of the Valley of Mexico. Eighty-seven (87) Schlumberger vertical electric sounding (VES) were made and distributed in different profiles in the aquifer area. The VES data were collected in the field with a Terrameter SAS-300B resistivity meter with 750 m current electrode opening on both sides of a common center and interpreted with the Interpex IX1D software. The longitudinal conductance was obtained from the process of inversion of the data, and maps were elaborated with the kriging method and minimum curvature in Surfer V16. The thickness of the upper layer of the unsaturated zone varies between 0.3 and 10.5 m. The longitudinal conductance of the upper layer presents values from 0.0 to 75 Siemens/m. The groundwater level in the aquifer has an elevation of 2140 m asl in the south-central zone of the study area to 2290 m asl in the foothills of the Sierra de Río Frío. The AVI method allows us to correlate the hydraulic conductivity Kv (m/d) data and the thickness h (m) of the unsaturated zone to determine values of the hydraulic resistance C = 1.4 to 3.9 days. The obtained results are of interest to the municipal authorities in planning and deciding to preserve the underground water resource.
Boron adsorption on modified zeolites: Effect of modifier and source of water
The removal of boron from drinking water is a concern in various parts of the world due to the toxic effects of this metalloid in high concentrations. In this paper, zeolites LTL and FAU X were synthesized and modified with salts of nickel (NiCl2), iron (FeCl3), and aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APS) in order to promote their affinity for boron species present in aqueous systems. The adsorption capacity of modified zeolites for boron was evaluated in a synthetic boron solution and with groundwater samples for human use. The effect of the pH and zeolite dose was studied in adsorption tests using groundwater. The modified zeolites were characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, nitrogen physisorption, and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy. Results indicated that the modification of zeolites favors affinity for boron species. The highest adsorption capacity of boron on zeolites was achieved in the synthetic solution. The adsorption capacity of the modified zeolites depended on the pH, the electrical conductivity, the modifying agent, the zeolitic structure, and the dose of adsorbent. The zeolitic structure-modifying agent interaction was decisive for boron adsorption capacity, with LTL-Ni zeolite being the best-performing adsorbent, thanks to its textural properties and nickel’s ability to form complexes with boron species. The removal of boron from drinking water is a concern in various parts of the world due to the toxic effects of this metalloid in high concentrations. Market competition and risk assessment of nanofiber composite materials
Nano cellulose has the advantages of high degree of polymerization, high strength, degradability, and large specific surface area. The modifier is uniformly dispersed in the matrix material to form a composite system containing nano-scale materials in one phase. With regard to the above-mentioned competitive situation of performance fibers, China should first strengthen the research on engineering scale-up, focusing on finding the factors that affect product quality and dispersion coefficient from engineering issues, and making continuous improvements. Using the analytic hierarchy process method, according to the idea of first decomposition and then synthesis, through pairwise comparison between risk indicators, the risk weights of risk factors at various levels in the risk assessment index system are rigorously calculated and sorted, and the degree of membership and validity are compared. The risk assessment index is judged, the fuzzy clustering algorithm is used to identify the bad data in the market competition data, and the conditional value-at-risk (CVaR) model is constructed to conduct risk assessment. Experimental results show that the actual logarithmic rate of return fluctuates around 0, most of which are higher than the Va R value. Only in extreme cases will it break the Va R curve; the accuracy of risk assessment is close to 100%, and the (Tech-Sector Volatility)TSV indicator begins to decline significantly. That is, the transmission sensitivity of risk data is effectively improved.Nano cellulose has the advantages of high degree of polymerization, high strength, degradability, and large specific surface area.
N2O has a global warming potential of 300 times greater than CO2, and in silvopastoral systems, urine is a source of N2O emission. The objective of the research was to evaluate the effect of the diet for bovines based on Leucaena leucocephala on N2O emissions in a simulated urine patch in a silvopastoral system. A Cynodon plectostachyus meadow was used, and 13 samplings were carried out during March - April 2021. The treatments were, A: 20 kg of urea/ha from bovine urine fed with 100% C. plectostachyus hay + 0% L leucocephala, B: 36 kg of urea/ha from the urine of bovines fed with 16% of L. leucocephala + 84% of C. plectostachyus and C: 79 kg of urea/ha from the urine of bovines fed with 33% L. leucocephala + 67% C. plectostachyus. A completely randomized design with four replicates was used. Static closed stainless-steel chambers were used to obtain gas samples at 0, 10, 20 and 30 minutes. Environmental temperature, pH, humidity, nitrate and ammonium contents in the soil were recorded. Data were analyzed with the statistical program SAS 9.0. The N2O emission flux (μg/m2/h) between treatments did not present significant differences. The emission peak was observed on the fourth day of sampling in the treatments (A: 17.49, B: 23.71 and C: 22.88 μg N2O N m2/h). In addition, there was a positive correlation between the N2O flux and soil moisture. The increase in the amount of L. leucocephala in the diet of the animals did not influence the emission of N2O, due to the concentration of urea in the urine. However, a positive correlation with soil moisture was observed.
This study presents the social perceptions of tourists, local people, government officials, bird watchers, fishermen, and producers of goods and services concerning the management, monitoring, solutions, responsibilities, and condition of the water quality in the Laguna de Yuriria, Guanajuato. The information was obtained through semi-structured interviews and digital questionnaires designed to be remotely applied due to the pandemic caused by a new coronavirus (COVID-19). Overall, 71 persons participated. The data obtained were processed with the R package for Qualitative Data Analysis (RQDA) and were grouped into the three dimensions of human well-being (material, relational, and subjective). Of the interviewees, 7.05 % considered the water quality to be good, 18.30 % regular, 42.26 % bad, and 12.67 % very bad, while 19.72 % did not know the subject. Government officials consider that the water quality condition is due to poor management and public administration. Bird watchers warn that the water quality is poor, and it affects the biodiversity of species. Most fishermen consider that the water quality is regular and that the lagoon still sustains the economy of their families and the communities of La Angostura and Los Tepetates. This perceptions helped to obtain a social analysis of the lagoon’s water quality. They can be lead to the strengthening and creation of strategies for managing and conserving this water body.
