    Cook County\u27s 1.2m residential properties are revalued using a nonlinear tree-based model. This talk will combine visualization and analytics to share some lessons learned about model comparison and an algorithm for model transparency. First, we\u27ll show how we rigorously conduct different model tests and visualize IAAO statistics for easy comparison. Once we have a model we trust, our goal is to earn the trust of the public who are becoming increasingly aware of AI tools and their pitfalls. We\u27ll discuss a novel algorithm that extracts each subject property\u27s sale comps used by the nonlinear model and demonstrate how we share this data with the goal of improving transparency and trust in government

    Under Assessment Complaints: Public and Governmental Oversight of Blips in the Assessment Fabric is a unique review of the Cook County assessment system, the second largest in the nation. The public can review its assessment database and see assessment outliers. The opportunity to see errors and bring them to the attention of the assessment officials can save millions of dollars and reduce the inequities. This is a unique presentation by highly respected elected assessment assessor and a 30+ assessment professional with experience both as an assessment adjudicator and private practitioner watch dog taxpayers\u27s property tax dollars. In 2022 and 2023, Patrick Hynes, an Illinois, Cook County elected Assessor, and Andrea Raila, in her position as a homeowner, filed successful under-assessment appeals on more than 50 parcels. Both successfully represented homeowners for the first-time since 1989 when the former Cook County Board of Review Tax Commissioner filed an underassessment appeal against a $200 million Chicago central business district skyscraper
