The Narrative Complexity of Contemporary TV Series Based on Vince Gilligan’s Breaking Bad The formula of the contemporary TV series, as a product of quality television, diff ers signifi cantly from the traditional series in terms of its narrative structure and ways of building a plotline. Th is article presents an analysis of  the Breaking Bad series’ “narrative complexity”, which is the most distinguishing feature of the modern TV series. “Narrative complexity” can be understood not only as a series of innovative narrative devices, such as cold opens, fl ashbacks and fl ashforwards, but is also based on the multiplicity of plotlines present in each episode, constituting a whole story over the course of the seasons. Looking at the ways used to construct a plot and the narrative techniques adopted in Vince Gilligan’s Breaking Bad, that is, his use of parallels and symmetries, and the plot’s focus on the development of the series’ (anti)hero, the show can be interpreted as a “result drama"and “mirroring drama”. Th rough its use of the above-listed features of “narrative complexity”, the show meets the standards for a contemporary, quality television series. The Narrative Complexity of Contemporary TV Series Based on Vince Gilligan’s Breaking Bad The formula of the contemporary TV series, as a product of quality television, diff ers signifi cantly from the traditional series in terms of its narrative structure and ways of building a plotline. Between Classical Narration and Non-classical Dramaturgy. Jagoda Szelc’s Such a Landscape An abandonment of classical narration and a search for unconventional dramaturgical techniques are increasingly observed in the works of students from the Łódź Film School. One such short fi lm illustrating this tendency is Such a Landscape, directed by Jagoda Szelc. To create her individual and original piece, the director employs three traditional dramatic structures – that of an episodic fi lm, a Greek tragedy, and one connected with using the symbol as a tension-building tool. Jagoda Szelc proves that being sceptical about classical narration does not have to indicate a rejection of the whole tradition of storytelling. Instead, she chooses to use it as a fabric.Between Classical Narration and Non-classical Dramaturgy. Between Korea and Europe. The Dramaturgy of Films by Kim Ki-duk The article attempts to point out how Korean director Kim Ki-duk constructs the dramaturgy of his films. His works belong to the European art cinema tradition, and are marked by specific narrative structures and strategies (e.g. chronological order of events, parallel and mirror plot schemes, silent characters and limitation of film dialogue). Dramaturgically significant are also repeating scenes of violence and cruelty, characteristic for Kim. Finally, briefly presented are critical approaches to his films, which together with the director’s biography allow us to call him “an accented filmmaker” (using terms and concepts proposed by Hamid Naficy).Between Korea and Europe. The Methodological Problems of Studies on the History of Polish Postwar Documentary The author discusses the narratives and stereotypical (ideological) point of view as a matrix for constructing an overly simple image of the Polish documentary in the postwar period (1944–1955) as shadowed in the untruth of political discourse. In Marek Hendrykowski’s opinion this particular period in Polish documentary film was much more complicated and multi perspectived (in a “dialogical” sense) as a research object posing new questions and opening new perspectives for film historians. Its vital elements are a three-act structure and two plot twists. It is also characterized by the development of tension, intended to lead to a constant rise in emotions as the story advances. The dramaturgy of the scenes and their sequence are built in many ways, the main two being suspense and delay. These are used to suspend action, slow it down in order to achieve an element of surprise, and to raise emotions in forthcoming scenes.Paradigm and Suspense. Reflections from the RostrumIn his polemics with the Documentary Filmmaker Guide by Grażyna Kędzielawska, Michał Bukojemski claims that the notional apparatus, filmmaking methods, and production technologies described in the book do not adhere to the digital present day. The author believes that the teaching of documentary filmmaking in film school should begin with setting and describing the main goal, which is the film itself. Today’s documentary film has specific conditions, such as financing, distribution and shooting technologies. Speaking about various methods and practicing different forms of filmmaking are rather auxiliary goals that should be fulfilled in the course of studies. The author convinces us that both the subject and the story are crucial for the documentary film. And with them academic teachers should begin and end their teaching of documentary filmmaking.Reflections from the RostrumIn his polemics with the Documentary Filmmaker Guide by Grażyna Kędzielawska, Michał Bukojemski claims that the notional apparatus, filmmaking methods, and production technologies described in the book do not adhere to the digital present day.
