Semantic issues of film. A contribution to the theory of creating the human character on the screenEdward Żebrowskiss masters thesis “Semantyczne zagadnienia dzieła filmowego. Przyczynek do teorii budowy postaci człowieka na ekranie” (“Semantic issues of film. Contribution to the theory of the creation of human character on screen”), which he defended in 1965, has not yet been published as a whole nor in any part. In his work, Żebrowski focuses on the issue of creating film characters, understood as part of the film material, deliberately omitting the aspect of acting. Using broad the- oretical contexts the author arrives at practical conclusions related to filmmakingSemantic issues of film. Do każdego gestu inny aktor. Ontologia przedmiotów w Ulicy Krokodyli Brunona Schulza i realizacji filmowej braci Quay
A diff erent actor for each gesture. The ontology of objects in Bruno Schulz’s Street of Crocodiles and the fi lms of the Quay brothersHumanism deprived things of the attention they undoubtedly deserve. An anthropocentric way of perceiving the world dominated most movements in contemporary philosophy and classified them as incapacitated products of human practices. Until now object-oriented ontology has focussed predominantly on literature, but it also creates whole new possibilities for film theorists, forcing viewers to change prevailing formulae.A diff erent actor for each gesture. The ontology of objects in Bruno Schulz’s Street of Crocodiles and the fi lms of the Quay brothersHumanism deprived things of the attention they undoubtedly deserve. Dla kogo pracuje dziś Król Artur? Użycia i nadużycia mitu arturiańskiego
Who does King Arthur work for today? Uses and abuses of the Arthurian mythAnalyzing the phenomenon of one of the most popular European myths - the Arthurian myth - the author attempts to answer the question of the difference between using and abusing myths. An insight into the sources of Arthurian tradition proves that even the oldest and most important literary incar- nations of the myth were used by their authors as a means of speaking about contemporary political and sociological issues. However, the Arthurian films (which are the main subject of this research) reinforce the thesis about a distinctive feature of a myth itself to be immensely flexible and able to absorb various cultural content. The study examines in detail the film King Arthur (2004, dir. Antoine Fuqua). Its creators seem to come very close to the border between use and abuse of a myth by denying the mythical aspect of the Arthurian legendsWho does King Arthur work for today? Przełamując tabu. O najwcześniejszych filmowych echach wydarzeń marcowych
Breaking the taboo. The earliest cinematic echoes of the March 1968 experiencThe articles author tries to prove that the experience of March 1968 had a great influence on the Polish film industry. Through the examples of Marek Piwowskis “The Cruise”, Tadeusz Konwickis “How Far Away, How Near” and Andrzej Żuławskis “The Devil” the author proves that the memory of March 1968 became a part of Polish filmography very soon, in spite of the unfavorable conditions arising from the vigilance of state censorship.Breaking the taboo. Believing in Murder. Working with Actors
In this paper I want to focus on working with actors. How we tried to reach such extreme emotions and behaviour as described above. I will describe the process of rehearsals with the two main actors and the problems we met on the road. Its important to mention that the idea for this kind of film was also strongly inspired by my wish to work with actors on an extremely emotional level, where we would all more or less lose control
Fakt medialny
Fake newsMarek Hendrykowskis analytical study concentrates on deep semantic structure and the social context of the news fabricated by media. Fake news is considered a functional expression of various prejudices, biases, stereotypes and emotions circulating in the common consciousness of contemporary society. When peoples emotions are intense, the impact of fictitious news is stronger and rational knowledge transmission is poorly explored. The critical re- actions of an individual viewer are seen as being particularly important to anticipatory regulation. The functional definition of “fake news” presented by the author provides a useful framework for organizing observations and interdisciplinary studies on this phenomenon.Fake newsMarek Hendrykowskis analytical study concentrates on deep semantic structure and the social context of the news fabricated by media. Ogólna teoria aktora? O tradycyjnej metodologii badania aktorstwa filmowego w perspektywie performatyki
The General Theory of the Actor and Acting? On the traditional methodology of research in the domain of film acting from the perspective of the theory of performingThese reflections concern film acting, or to be more exact, the canonical three-stage research scenario, i.e. description, analysis and interpretation. They require a methodological interdisciplinary confluence of multiple strands, beyond the confines of a monolithic methodology. At a certain stage of the methodological reflections on acting (performing) there emerged a tendency to employ various disciplines. I would like to call it “the general theory of the actor and acting” or “the theory of performing”. The theory of performing, in fact, brings together such realms as anthro- pology, semiotics, phenomenology, aesthetics, the theory of literature, the psychology of perception of on-stage and on-screen representations, and, in a narrower sense, also studies on facial expression, diction and prosody, gesture and kinesics. However, in the most rudimentary sense it does consider the fundamental role of the actor and acting to be the focal point of discussion - the question of the very performance.Does the theory of performing explore the phenomenon of film acting (performing), and if so, to what degree is it the case? Two reference points for this issue seem to emerge. The first concerns the very choice of the object for analysis, involving such dimensions as relational networks of multiple actions regarding the actor and the process of acting, resulting in the creation of the character in a given film. The other, directly related to the first, concerns the very point of departure in the exploratory research process. How does the profile of the actor emerge due to such procedures as camera-work, montage, dubbing or motion control? It seems that what should be at the very centre of attention of the general theory of actor and acting is the actor-as-a-real-person, the interpreter of his own role-play, and also the subject of the actions involving the constructive process of a given film role, which results in the final on-stage/on-screen effect. We ought to pose the question of whether or not he is merely an acting element inhabiting the situation of the shooting within the confines of the camera-work. The theory of performing is not so much focused on the actor as an analog of a real human being (the fact that should be considered positively), but is focused on the actual acting process, the process of performing, first and foremost, the autonomous performer. Hence, another question arises: who is the character in the on-screen mode of existence? What is his real identity? The general theory of the actor and acting strives to answer this question from multiple viewpoints, from the viewpoints of anthropology, structuralism, deconstruction theory, as well as in terms of the most promising approaches (in my opinion), namely the cognitive and phenomenological stances. Here the floor is open for discussion. The General Theory of the Actor and Acting?
