Get PDFThe article “Transponering eller transformasjon?” (“Transposition or Transformation?”) sketches two common types of literary translation on the base of some works by classic and modern writers from Slavic literatures.The translators adhering to what may be called the school of Transposition, strive to attain a high degree of identity with the original, those preferring the method of Transformation permit themselves various liberties, as witnessed by Agnieszka Kołakowska’s English translation of Antoni Libera’s novel Madame, where even some of the characters’ names in the original are changed in the translation. Similar transformations can be found in Norwegian translations of the novels of Dostoevsky during the years after the Second World War

Get PDFThe comparison of spatial prepositions in Polish and Swedish is based on the assumption that spatial exponents of different languages represent a common conceptual system, a kind of elementary geometry. The common universe consists of DISTANCE, DIMENSIONS, INTERIOR, EXTERIOR and concepts related to the vertical and to the horisontal axis. The languagespecific distinctions show that each language discovers or stresses somewhat different features of the world referred to. Thus, on the one hand, the repertoire of spatial exponents tends to differ from language to language. On the other hand, there are differences in the semantic structure. Some Swedish prepositions need nouns denoting ringformed, cassetteshaped or bending objects, while Polish prepositions specify objects as full or empty, being in dynamic contact, or surrounded by other objects like islands. Swedish stresses the one- and three-dimensionality of objects more consistently than Polish. External surface of objects and the close adjacency are also differently structured in the languages in question. Some difference in spatial metonymy and metaphors are also pointed out
On translating titles of literary works

Literary critics and scholars have been for years engaged in a debate on whether Katz is a Finnish writer or a foreign author who writes in Finnish about problems marginal to Finns. In modem Uterature the labsrrinth has played a major role as a metaphor for the city and the forlomness of the individual in the big cities. Ulf Eriksson and Aris Fioretos, two contemporary Swedish noyelists, discuss in recent novels {Xaviers hemlighet and Stockholm noir) the relevance of the metaphor todey.
