Jon Fosses "Namnet" - en lesning

    Get PDF
Jon Fosse is perhaps the most popular contemporary Norwegian playwright today, often being compared to Henrik Ibsen. This article analyses one of his most famous and frequently staged dramas, “The Name”. Reference is made to Peter Szondi’s definition of classical drama as interpersonal relationships in the present, but it is used to show that a negation of the above is the underlying principle of Fosse’s plays, including “The Name”. Fosse seems to be of the opinion that interpersonal relationships in the modern world are barely possible. An analysis of “The Name” is done to illustrate this thesis. Major importance has been given to the language, with its typical features such as repetitions, aborted sentences and pauses. The author concludes that the extraordinary characteristics of Fosse’s language are the most prominent and idiosyncratic element of his rather traditionally constructed plays and, hence, a key to his growing popularity outside Norway

Att framställa det oframställbara. Stig Larssons poesi och det postmoderna

    Get PDF
The paper constitutes an analysis of the poetry of Stig Larsson in the context of the postmodern break-up of traditional definitions of literary genres. The characteristic features of the Swedish poet\u27s work are ambiguity, fragmentation, rich intertextual references, and, most importantly, a radically undefined, diffuse persona of the speaker, no longer able to organize the presented world. Larsson\u27s poetry is rich in lexical, semantic and syntactic experimentation. The poet suggests a change in the relation between the author and the reader

Towards an understanding of ekphrasis: Morten Søndergaard’s Nedtcelling til en skulptur af Michelangelo (Pieta di Rondamni i Milano)

    Get PDF
Morten Søndergaard is one of the best known Danish poets who made their debut in the nineties. The visual arts as well as the tension between language and the reality to which words are supposed to refer play a remarkable role in the poet’s oeuvre. Hie article investigates the problem of poetic language in an encounter with a sculpture. The first part introduces some issues o f ekphrasis, which serve as a point of departure for an analysis of S0ndergaard’s poem. TTie aim of the analysis is an examination of a paradox central to the meaning of the poem: while undermining the possibility of verbal representation, the poem introduces various strategies attempting to imitate sculpture. The poet’s struggle with language becomes simultaneously the reader\u27s, who faces the question of how to “find our way through what separates words from what is both without a name and more than a name: a sculpture.”1</sup&gt

    Aktionsart or Aspect?

    Get PDF
In this paper the issue of the relationship between aktionsart and aspect with the point of departure in Swedish, (compared to English and Polish) is being discussed. It is argued that the definition of bounded aktionsart in Swedish does not allow for maintaining the distinction between aktionsart and aspect. The division bounded/unbounded types of action overlaps to a great degree, but not systematically, with the distinction perfective/imperfective aspect in the equivalent Polish sentences (aspectual values being overtly marked). Thus, in some cases, aspectual and actional meanings involve the same defining features, in other cases the defining features are different. It is suggested that maintaining the distinction between having and reaching the natural final point (reaching entails having, but having does not necessarily entail reaching) may, in many cases, make it possible to keep those two categories apart

Jon Fosse i Polen - en utakknemlig begynnelse

    Get PDF
The article concentrates on the reception of Jon Fosse’s plays in Poland, where the dramatist remains practically unknown, although he has recently become the most frequently staged playwright in Europe. It seems that Fosses dramas have not found understanding among Polish critics. The article analyses the reviews of Fosse’s dramas published in Polish press until May 2004. Till then only three plays were staged in Polish theatres and five were translated. The author points out that Fosse’s dramas in Poland, rather than being a permanent element of the repertoire, are frequently staged as parts of various theatrical projects aiming at finding new solutions for modern drama and theatre. Finally, she concludes that the dialogue of Fosse’s plays is always their most original (although often controversial) element, regardless of the language of translation
