National identity, in the meaning of a need to define oneself as a member of a nation and to characterize one\u27s nation, is not constant. It increases during crises and transformations in state and society, and decreases in periods of stabilisation. In the case of Sweden, the research on the natłonal character and identity flourished in the 19th and the early 20th century, which was crucial time politically, economically and socially. The main trends in a searching for the Swedish identity, which are discussed in this article, were inspired by the Nordic mjrthology, the so called great power period in the Swedish history (the 17th century) and the folk traditions symbolised by the province of Dalecarlia. This article presents also the attempts to portray the Swedish national character by C. L. J. Almqvist, V. von Heidenstam, E. Key, A. Strindberg and G. Norway in the Polish press in Great Britain during WWII

The Polish press in exile’s interest in Norwegian affairs began when Germany attacked Denmark and Norway in April 1940, at which time Polish soldiers were sent to Narvik to participate in the Allies’ defence of the country. The battle of Narvik became a symbol of Polish-Norwegian solidarity and reactivated existing Polish traditions of identifying themselves with those fighting “for our freedom and yours” For a long time Norway was associated in Polish minds with the expedition to Narvik. The subject was frequently raised in the emigre Polish press and in separate publications during the course of the War. This interest in Norway was enhanced by a community spirit and a shared political aim: the defeat o f Germany and the liberation of the homeland. Therefore Polish journalists recorded all kinds of Norwegian propaganda in Britain, important statements made by the King, Haakon VII, and by the government in exile. Polish commentators also presented Norway as a victim of German aggression. Numerous articles described the conditions of every day life under German occupation; issues related to food shortages, the lack of basic articles as clothes and fuel were all repeatedly exposed. From the end of 1941 this media coverage presented its readers with a picture of a nation that was actively resisting occupation. The difficult question of Vidkun Quisling’s collaboration with the Germans was, however, dealt with separately by Polish publicists

The paper presents main trends in the contemporary Swedish and Danish postmodern poetry represented by the generation of poets who made their debut in the 1980s. In the author’s opinion the poems are characterised by the diffuse persona of the speaker, rich intertextuality, the blending of literary genres and the focus on poetic language exposed to various experiments and analyses. For a postmodern poet a poem is not a ready-made product but rather a stage in an incessant process, it is both creative and unrestricted

In all his novels Jan Kjærstad in a very significant manner makes use of pictorial descriptions. The objects, which he describes, oscillate between famous pictures of artists like Vermeer, Picasso, Gauguin, van Gogh and imaginary ones, which are the products of the author’s own phantasy. Together the descriptions of real and fictional objets d’art shape a network of interpictorial patterns, which are typical for Kjaerstad’s way of writing. These interfigural traces seem to me to be very important parts of the textual conception of his novels and they obviously have a metaphoric function. In my contribution I focus on some aspects of this metaphoric structure by means of pictorial description and show some semantic implications of the interpictorial relations and of the basic communications between verbal and graphic signs, which in the novels of Kjærstad can be traced back to a common point of departure, in which there is no difference between written and pictorial expression

    Om den svenska postmodernismen

It is highly characteristic of the Swedish postmodern fiction that it is trying to destroy the differences between pure fiction and reahty, between the action taking place and the narration itself, only the bare bone hyperreality should remain. The meetings between the fictitious and the real existing persons must be seen as an attempt to take a fmal step beyond this border. There exists no absolute truth and that is the reason why there cannot be any lie, there is nothing left but the authentic, autistic narration, which can sometimes be autobiographic or horrifying, but always referring to other already written literature. It is highly characteristic of the Swedish postmodern fiction that it is trying to destroy the differences between pure fiction and reahty, between the action taking place and the narration itself, only the bare bone hyperreality should remain. Kongeriket Polens gjenreisning eller "densy vend edeling"? Manifestet av 5. november 1916 i norsk presse

The Declaration of 5th November was seen as one of the most significant international events in the autumm of 1916. European newspapers, not least the Norwegian ones, printed the news from Poland on the front pages. The reason for such a switch in the interest of the inter-national public opinion was the Allies’ concern that the Central Powers wanted to strengthen their armies with Polish recruits. Until that time the Norwegian coverage of the Polish question had been strongly influenced by the German news agencies, which usually were the main sources of information about developments in the Polish regions. The events of November 1916 changed this tendency by prompting the Norwegian newspapers to print the relevant comments on the Polish question from the western Allies and Russia. This novel approach, however, was not entirely devoid of subjectivity, as might have been seen in the article “Poland’s seventh partition” published in the Aftenposten of 15th November, 1916, in which Russia, though at that time in actual control of the occupied territories of Poland, was presented as a brotherly defender of the Polish nation
