Jaget i Erik Lindegrens diktsamling mannen utan väg

Erik Lindegren’s volume \u27mannen utan vag\u27 (\u27the man without a way’, 1942/1945) is considered the most significant work of the Swedish 40s. The volume consists of forty sonnets. They are identical as regards their form, but the traditional structure of sonnet has been \u27blown up\u27 here. Such a new form, which combines pure harmony and disintegration, corresponds with the created reality: a world contaminated by evil. A metaphorical equivalent of this world is the ‘room of mirrors’, described in the first sonnet. All these circumstances influence the protagonist, not only the way in which he appears in the particular poems, but also his psyche. While living in the room of mirrors, he disintegrates into many different images. Each of them represents an attitude, which is often in sharp contrast to the other ones. As a modernist, Erik Lindegren believed that the truth is hidden in subjective visions. Therefore, the man without a way seems to symbolise a universal human nature consisting of many personalitie

Polish-English Terminological Equivalence in the Language of Politics

    Get PDF
In the present study we put forward a translation method that would help ensure the proper rendering of Polish political terminology into English (or any other language since the tenets of this method are universal and can be applied to any pair of languages). The translation procedure is based on findings of Barbara Z. Kielar. We also present the classification of equivalents that are obtained after applying the method. This is followed by considerations on the possibility of attaining particular types of terminological equivalence and an appeal that the presented method be applied universally in order to improve the quality of political translations produced in Poland. A sample Polish-English glossary of political terms compiled on the basis of the advocated method is enclosed as the “Appendix”

The present article develops some of the ideas contained in my MA-thesis Ordsprak i modem svenska... This article deals with analysis of proverbs as open formulae in Modem Swedish. It refers to a research done on two data corpora consisting of newspaper material and on some other newspaper articles and advertisements  from the years 1997-2004. In the written sources of Swedish proverbs available today some syntactic and semantic matrices serving for the construction of proverbs can be distinguished. In the research part of this article some forms of variation of the original matrix formulae have been observed and described. The conclusion is that the proverbs in Modem Swedish still undergo variation within the frames of the formulae, just as they probably did in the days of oral culture

The remnants of ancient German alliterating poetry that have come down to us are sparse. In the middle of the 9th century alliterating poetry had practically come to an end in the High German language area. At the same time an extensive Christian literature made its appearance (Otfried), using almost exclusively end rhyme. In accordance with the prevalent philological opinion that end rhyme harmonizes perfectly with the concept of Christianity. It was the ideal vehicle for communicating Christian flights of fancy, which alliterating rhyme was not. Alliteration, therefore, yields to end rhyme. In the light of a of Icelandic poetry this view cannot be shared. Christian poetry, be it Scaldic art (e.g. Lilja), be it baroque art (e.g. Passiusalmar), conveys its message harmoniously using a strict alliteration pattern with end rhyme. The alliterating end rhyme verse is the typical pattern of Icelandic poetry, with its earliest appearance in early Scaldic poetry. - An appendix to this article treats alliterating end rhyme verse in Finnish literature
