Get PDFThe paper describes the process of a literary work’s perception from the perspective of transformations made in Polish translations of H.C. Andersens’s work. The author presents the historical perspective of translating Andersen into Polish in the 19th and 20th century and, based on selected examples, analyzes such essential issues within the realm of artistic translation as translation policy/publishing policy as well as the translator’s culture-formative role and tasks. The analyzed issues also include recent and older translations, the culture of translation and, last but not least, the role of translational and literary criticism in the reception process

The variations presuppose correspondingly distinct images of the very first moments of creation and, in consequence, different spatial coordinates. The article examines the linguistic ground of some of the images, asking questions on the translators’ own creative contribution to our understanding of the Bible. Oversættelsesstrategier af retningsadverbiet ud i polske oversættelser af H.C. Andersens Eventyr & Historier
Get PDFThe article is an investigation into strategies applied when translating Danish sentences with the directional adverb ud into Polish. The analyzed material consists of three different translations of a selection of H.C. Andersen’s fairytales into Polish, i.e. Cecylia Niewiadomska’s (1908), Stefania Beylin and Jarosław Iwaszkiewicz’s (1975) and Bogusława Sochanska’s (2006). The analysis is mainly focused on the Polish equivalents of Danish sentences with the directional adverb ud. However, since only Sochanska’s translation is a direct translation from Danish into Polish (the remaining ones are translations via German) the article’s analytical part also includes a comparison of strategies applied by the individual translators. Lastly, some comments are made with regards to the semantic status of the Danish directional adverb ud and its Polish equivalents

Get PDFThe article is an account of the life and death of Halldor Espelid, a young Norwegian RAF pilot born in Bergen, trained at “Little Norway” in Canada, shot down over occupied France, put in the POW camp for airmen in Sagan (now Żagań in Poland), arrested near Flensburg while taking part in the so-called Great Escape, and murdered at the age of 24 by the Kiel Gestapo. His body was cremated, his ashes buried at Sagan and later moved to the Old Garrison Cemetery in Poznań, Poland, together with the remains of 47 other participants of the famous Great Escape murdered at Hitler’s personal order
Sammansättningar i Språkrådets nyordslistor: produktivitet och förståelighet
Get PDFCompounding seems to be the most productive word formation process in Swedish on the basis of “new words’ lists” (Swedish: nyordslistor) registered by the Language Council of Sweden (Svenska Språkrådet). The subject of the research was the productiveness of compounds and their comprehensibility for the native speakers. The material for the corpus analysis showing the productivity of compounds consisted of 353 compound words from the lists from years 2000 – 2012. With help of a survey where pupils from a secondary school in Tingsryd in Småland were asked to define 17 compounds from “new words’ list” 2008 a conclusion could be drawn that compound words are short-lived, ephemeral constructions. The analysis has shown the big pace of changes that the lexicon undergoes and the linguistic creativity of language users as well as their strong need to create new terms. The results can evoke questions about the effectiveness of communication in relation to the features of new words.The article is based on my unpublished master’s thesis
