    No full text

    No full text
Speech acts directly influence institutional power in high-stakes academic communication, such as thesis defence. This study explored the types and functions of speech acts in oral presentations during the EFL thesis defence in the setting of Indonesian higher education. It employed a qualitative descriptive approach and a pragmatic analysis framework to investigate the speech acts in the oral presentation using Searle’s (1969) framework. The participants were eight EFL undergraduates of Timor University. Data were collected through observation and recording. The findings showed that candidates strategically used assertive, directive, commissive, and expressive utterances to navigate academic defences. These acts establish epistemic authority, highlight the significance of research, provide recommendations, structure discourse, and emphasise the ceremonial aspect of defences. These results are useful for understanding academic discourse, speech act realisation, and pragmatic competence in EFL academic settings

Pronunciation instruction in digital EFL programs at Indonesian university: Pedagogical challenges and opportunities

    No full text
The use of digital technology has significantly transformed traditional pedagogical practice for pronunciation instruction. Numerous studies have explored the positive and negative impact of digital tools in pronunciation instruction, yet only a limited number of studies emphasize the pedagogical challenges and opportunities of digital devices in pronunciation instruction, particularly within Indonesian higher education level. To fill this gap, this qualitative study investigates the pedagogical challenges and opportunities of pronunciation instruction in digital EFL programs at Indonesian university. Data collection was conducted through semi-structured interviews and class observations involving 29 participants, including 2 EFL lecturers and 27 university students. Findings reveal that while digital platforms such as mobile apps, websites, YouTube, LMS, and AI-powered platforms facilitate increased learner autonomy and provide authentic pronunciation models, barriers persist in the form of limited digital literacy among lecturers, inadequate institutional support, and infrastructural constraints. Despite these challenges, lecturers and students generally hold positive attitudes toward technology integration, recognizing its potential to enhance the process of pronunciation teaching and learning. The study underscores the need for targeted professional development and greater institutional investment to fully leverage digital technologies in pronunciation instruction. Implications for policy and pedagogy in similar developing contexts are discussed

Perceived Value Mediates Product Quality and Price Effects on Purchases at Pandang Kopi, Gianyar, Bali

    No full text
The rapid growth of the Indonesian coffee industry has intensified competition among local coffee shop MSMEs, particularly in tourism destinations such as Gianyar, Bali. In this context, understanding how consumers evaluate product quality and price through perceived value is essential for sustaining competitiveness. This study investigates the direct effects of product quality and price on purchasing decisions and examines the mediating role of perceived value among consumers of Pandang Kopi, a local MSME coffee shop. A quantitative approach was employed using Partial Least Squares–Structural Equation Modelling (PLS-SEM). Data were collected from 106 consumers through accidental sampling and analyzed using SmartPLS 4.1.1.2. The results show that product quality (β = 0,159; p < 0,05) and price (β = 0,161; p < 0,05) have positive and significant direct effects on purchasing decisions. Perceived value demonstrates the strongest influence on purchasing decisions (β = 0,683; p < 0,001), explaining a substantial proportion of variance (R² = 0,79). Product quality (β = 0,309; p < 0,001) and price (β = 0,590; p < 0,001) also significantly enhance perceived value. Mediation analysis reveals that perceived value significantly mediates the relationship between product quality and purchasing decisions (β = 0,211; p < 0,001) as well as between price and purchasing decisions (β = 0,403; p < 0,001). Notably, the indirect effect of price through perceived value is stronger than its direct effect, indicating that consumers emphasize overall value rather than price alone. Theoretically, this study contributes to value-based consumer decision models by empirically validating perceived value as a central psychological mechanism in MSME coffee shops located in tourism regions. Practically, the findings suggest that local coffee shop MSMEs should prioritize sensory product quality, fair pricing, and holistic consumption experiences to strengthen perceived value and encourage purchasing decisions

Children’s perceptions of fathers’ contributions after parental separation

    No full text
Parental separation alters family dynamics and may affect children’s psychological well-being, particularly through changes in paternal involvement. While previous studies have largely focused on parental perspectives or childhood outcomes, limited attention has been given to how children in young adulthood perceive fathers’ contributions after divorce. This study aimed to explore young adults’ perceptions of fathers’ contributions following parental separation from emotional, relational, and financial perspectives. Using a qualitative exploratory-descriptive design, data were collected through semi-structured interviews with five young adult women aged 24–28 years. Participants were selected using purposive sampling with inclusion criteria: individuals who experienced parental divorce during childhood or adolescence, were currently in young adulthood, and were able to reflect on their emotional, social, and psychological experiences related to parental separation. Thematic analysis revealed five superordinate themes: emotional support, relationship with the father, psychological impact of parental separation, financial conditions, and expectations toward family relationships. Findings indicate that emotional presence and relational quality were perceived as more meaningful than financial contributions alone. This study highlights the importance of understanding post-divorce father involvement from children’s subjective perspectives and supports the development of post-separation parenting practices that prioritize emotional engagement

Trait neuroticism as a mediator between metacognitions about self-critical rumination and future anxiety in young adults

    No full text
Young adults may experience anxiety about their future, which may be related to their tendency to hold metacognitions about self-critical rumination and to neuroticism. However, research examining the dynamics of the relationships among these variables is still limited in Indonesia. This study aimed to examine the influence of metacognitions about self-critical rumination on future anxiety, with neuroticism as a mediator. The study involved 217 participants. Mediation regression analysis was conducted using bootstrapping with 5,000 resamples. The results showed a direct positive relationship between both positive and negative metacognitions about self-critical rumination and future anxiety. In addition, neuroticism mediated the relationships between positive and negative metacognitions about self-critical rumination and future anxiety. The limitations of this study include the relatively small sample size, limited socio-demographic diversity, and suboptimal cross-cultural evaluation of the positive metacognitions about self-critical rumination scale. Therefore, future research is recommended to replicate this study using a larger and more diverse sample and to strengthen the instrument’s cross-cultural validation

Flourishing at work across job sectors: The influence of big five personality traits

    No full text
A flourishing employee tends to have confidence in establishing broad and fulfilling social relationships. This capability is called flourishing, which is essential in the professional world. Several factors influence an individual’s capacity to flourish, including personality traits and the work environment. The primary objective of this study is to examine differences in flourishing across various work environments while controlling for the Big Five personality traits. This research adopts a quantitative comparative approach. The total number of participants in this study was 363 respondents, comprising 102 employees from State-Owned Enterprises, 113 employees from private companies, and 148 Civil Servants. The sampling technique used is accidental sampling. The study utilizes the Ten-Item Personality Inventory (TIPI) and the Flourishing Scale (FS) as measurement instruments. Data analysis is conducted using Analysis of Covariance (ANCOVA). The findings reveal that civil servants exhibit the highest level of flourishing compared to employees in SOEs and private companies when controlling for the Big Five personality traits. Furthermore, the results indicate that only the personality traits of extraversion and agreeableness significantly impact flourishing, whereas conscientiousness, emotional stability, and openness to experience do not exert a significant influence. Consequently, a work environment that ensures career stability is crucial in enhancing employees’ flourishing, regardless of their personality traits
