Linguistic Features and Conversational Functions of the Tosa Dialect in Gintama

    No full text
This study examines the linguistic forms and conversational functions of the Tosa dialect as represented in the anime Gintama. Originating from Kochi Prefecture, the Tosa dialect preserves elements of ancient Western Japanese in both phonologu and vocabulary, contributing to its distinct linguistic character. In Gintama, the dialect is used to construct character identity and highlight regional background, particularly for figures modeled after historical personalities from Tosa. Drawing on qualitative and descriptive methods, this study analyzed dialogues spoken by characters who use the Tosa dialect across several episodes. The analysis identifies seventeen dialectal forms, including grammatical variations such as ~yuu , ~chuu, ~ki, and ~jaki, and explores their pragmatic roles in expressing aspect, negation, emphasis, and causality. The findings reveal how dialectial variation contributes to characterization and authenticity in Japanese popular media. Despite notable differences from standard Japanese, the contextual use of the Tosa dialect in Gintama allows viewers to infer meaning and appreciate the cultural and linguistic diversity it represents

Exploring Students’ Perceptions of the Summary Method as a Reading Comprehension Strategy in Japanese Language Learning

    No full text
This study investigates students’ perceptions of implementing the summary method in the Advanced Reading 2 course of the Japanese Language Education Study Program at Brawijaya University. Conventional reading classes generally emphasize reading aloud and translating, which often leads students to focus on literal translation rather than comprehension (Trahutami, 2017). To overcome this limitation, the summary method was introduced to integrate reading, writing, and speaking skills, encouraging active language use during lessons. The study employed a descriptive qualitative approach with a case study design involving eight purposively selected students. Data were collected through questionnaires, interviews, and documentation. The findings show that most students viewed the summary method positively, noting that it improved their understanding of reading texts and enhanced their language proficiency. However, students with moderate and lower academic performance experienced difficulties simplifying sentences due to limited vocabulary and grammatical knowledge. Overall, the summary method proved effective in fostering comprehension and promoting language integration. Future research is recommended to include participants from different educational levels to provide broader insights into the method’s implementation in reading instruction

The development of Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology has opened new opportunities in the field of education, including in the acquisition of foreign languages such as Arabic. However, the integration of AI into Arabic language acquisition, especially for non-native speakers, still requires further exploration. This study aims to examine the potential of AI in supporting Arabic language acquisition, to identify AI-based learning strategies, and to analyze the challenges encountered in its application. This research uses a qualitative method with a library research approach. Data were collected from various sources, including scholarly journals, books, and articles related to Arabic language learning and AI technology. The data were analyzed descriptively and analytically by classifying and synthesizing relevant information. The findings show that AI holds significant potential in enhancing Arabic language acquisition through features such as chatbots, e-learning platforms, interactive quizzes, and conversation simulations. These strategies provide a more flexible, engaging, and personalized learning experience. However, challenges such as limited vocabulary, mistranslations, overdependence on technology, and access limitations still persist. Therefore, the use of AI should be balanced with contextual and critical approaches to ensure that Arabic language acquisition becomes more meaningful and effective

Global approaches to Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) vary, with increasing emphasis on inclusive practices and cross-cultural research for effective solutions. This study addresses the challenges surrounding the treatment and societal acceptance of children with ASD, particularly focusing on the transition from childhood to adulthood. It explores the initial emotional reactions of parents upon receiving an autism diagnosis and examines how foundations, schools, and clinics manage the care and treatment of children with ASD, emphasizing early and appropriate therapeutic interventions. The research compares the treatment of children with autism in Indonesia and adult individuals with autism in Germany. A mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative and qualitative methods, was employed, including a literature review on Indonesian autism research centers and in-depth interviews with experts from a special school and private therapy clinics in Indonesia. The study examines both beneficial and detrimental aspects of autism treatment, revealing societal misconceptions that perceive autism as a detriment, with therapeutic interventions viewed as the primary means of amelioration. Despite challenges, such as workforce limitations in educating children with autism, the study draws attention to the potential benefits of community-based initiatives in Germany, specifically the employment opportunities at Werkstätten (workshops), as a model for sustainable inclusion for individuals with autism in Indonesia. The research emphasizes the importance of such programs in enhancing autism literacy and preparing educators to foster better practices in young learners, ultimately contributing to the advancement of early childhood education across different cultural contexts

Lost in Translation: The Politics of Indonesian Literature in International Literary Spaces

    No full text
This study examines the cultural politics affecting Indonesian literature in the global literary arena. It analyses how literary politics, standardisation, implicit agendas, and validation systems impact international reception. The study investigates how global literary standards reshape Indonesian narratives to match international preferences, often at the expense of cultural authenticity. In addition, several works by some prominent Indonesian authors, including Toer, Anwar and Kurniawan are being analysed. Using a descriptive-qualitative approach with discourse analysis, interview and case studies, the research reveals three key findings: translation challenges for Indonesian literary works, limited international publication opportunities, and underrepresentation in global literary awards and criticism. Based on these findings, the study advocates for more inclusive literary practices to enhance Indonesian literature’s global visibility while preserving its cultural integrity

From invocation to indictment: Analyzing hate speech elements in a social media prayer

    No full text
This study investigates a controversial Facebook post prosecuted under Indonesian hate speech law, focusing on a “bad prayer” directed at the president during the 2019 election period. This research was a case study of a hate speech that the Tembilahan District Court, Indragiri Hilir, Riau, decided. The data was collected from the case trial on the website of the Supreme Court of the Republic of Indonesia and the associated Facebook group.  Employing semantic, sociolinguistic, and pragmatic analyses, the research explores how religious language can serve as a vehicle for politically motivated hate speech. Findings indicate that the expression, namely “Congratulations on the presidential inauguration, may he meet his end as soon as possible. Amen", constitutes minor hate speech by violating politeness principles and implying negative social judgment. The statement is motivated by the competition between two candidates in the 2019 presidential election, where the accused disapproved of the elected President Joko Widodo. This interdisciplinary approach contributes to forensic linguistics by introducing the concept of “bad prayer” and examining its sociopolitical and legal implications in Southeast Asian digital discourse.

Behind the Instagram post: unpacking ideological framing in @Folkative coverage of Indonesian political controversies

    No full text
This research examines how @Folkative, one of Indonesia’s most influential Instagram-based information platforms, frames political controversies through ideological language. By applying Fairclough’s three-dimensional model of critical discourse analysis, the research focuses on two viral posts: the Pertamina corruption case and the TNI Bill. The findings reveal that @Folkative employs strategic lexical choices, a visual and informal tone, and bilingualism as a powerful ideological framing tool to shape audiences’ perceptions of political events in Indonesia. The study also shows how @Folkative transforms passive media use into active discussion, where followers engage in comments, sarcasm, and debate over political issues. This research highlights how digital platforms, such as @Folkative, influence political narratives and public opinion in Indonesia’s evolving media landscape, particularly among young people

    No full text
Archetypes reflect the deep psychological complexity of a person\u27s life journey. The phenomena can be exemplified by Rin, the main character in R.F. Kuang\u27s novel The Poppy War. While previous research has explored the themes of gender and history, her psychological evolution through archetype transformation remains unexamined. This research addresses this gap by analysing Rin\u27s character through Carol Pearson\u27s twelve archetypes, revealing how trauma and ambition shape her reactions to certain situations. Using a descriptive qualitative approach, this study examines Rin\u27s dialogue, actions, and thoughts. Findings identified five dominant archetypes in Rin\u27s development which illustrate her psychological development from vulnerability to destructive empowerment. Those archetypes are The Orphan, The Warrior, The Seeker, The Destroyer, and The Magician. This study contributes to literary scholarship by demonstrating how archetype theory explains character psychology, offering a deeper understanding of narrative-driven identity formation in fiction
